Adams, T. (2015). Income of young adults.
The information provided is about the average income for young adults who worked
thirty-five hours or more per week and fifty or more weeks per year. It also includes the
annual earnings of year-round full time workers between the ages twenty-five to thirtyfour based of the education they have. This information is relevant to my research
because it provides a graph representing the difference in those who did not complete
high school and those who pursued an education. It is also relevant to my topic because it
provides comparison of yearly income on different education attainments, including high
school dropouts. It provides information vital to my research by showing the difference in
income and how an education could affect income. I plan to use this by using the graph as
a representation of the different annual earning grounded on education attainment. I also
plan to use the information provided on what percentage between the ages between
twenty-five to thirty-four worked full time.

Maynard, B., Salas-Wright, C., & Vaughn, M. (2015). High School Dropouts in Emerging
Adulthood: Substance Use, Mental Health Problems, and Crime. Community Mental
Health Journal, 51(3), 289-299. doi:10.1007/s10597-014-9760-5

This article researches high school dropouts that become involved with crime, substance
use and mental health problems. Throughout the article it goes into depth about how they

went about their research and the methods of their research. This is relevant to my topic
because it describes the effects of those who drop out in different categories. It describes
how much students who have dropout depend on substances and the long run effect. It is
important to know the how dropping out can affect people years after. I plan to use the
results of the research to describe different measures people take after not completing
high school. I also plan to use what demographic variables were used because this affects
the outcome of the research.

MAXWELL, L. A. (2013). DROPOUT REDUCTION. Education Week, 32(20), S4-S6.

In this article they talk about how the graduation rate average in Texas is seventy-seven
percent and almost five hundred for every eight thousand students would dropout. They
include how they improved this problem and what they learned. It is relevant to my
research because it states the average percentage of people who graduate in Texas. The
information is also relevant because it explains how to expand college access. I plan to
use the statistics and compare the average graduation rate in Texas to the one in El Paso.
It is important to know where El Paso stands in comparison to Texas. I also plan to
include how students can reach college and get back on the right track.

Petrick Jr., D. L. (2014). School Drop Outs: Poverty and Consequences for Society. Insights To
A Changing World Journal, 2014(4), 127-136.

In this article it discusses living conditions of health, in poverty, the social and emotional
needs of drop outs, literacy needs, and consequences for society when dropping out. It
was published in 2014 therefore it is recent research. It is relevant to my research because

it explains a few reasons as to why students may not complete high school. This article is
also relevant because aside from financial consequences it explains consequences in the
society. It is important to know how this affects everyone and not just the individual. I
plan to describe how it affects society economically and legally. It is also important to
know the support there is for poverty students who want to drop out.

Scott, M., Zhang, S., & Koball, H. (2015, April 1). Dropping Out and Clocking In A Portrait of
Teens Who Leave School Early and Work.
In this article it talks about sixteen to eighteen year olds who did not complete high
school and decided to work instead. The research is done over a course of five years from
2008-2012 and provides multiple graphs by the American Community Survey. It is
relevant to my research because it provides information on what employment will look
like for these teens who decide to not finish high school to work full time instead. Apart
from this it is also relevant to my research because it provides information on how the
teens who do not compete high school and work instead differ from other teens. I am
going to use this research by including some of the graphs they provide to back up my
information. It is important to my research that we know how much these teens earned on
a yearly income because this might contribute to people not completing high school. I
also plan to use information in this article that provides what we may be able to do to
avoid this.
Steinberg, A., & Allen, L. (2011). Putting Off-Track Youths Back on Track to College:
Integrating High School with College to Create Early College High Schools Creates an

Innovative Option for Moving More Students to Graduation and Postsecondary Success.
Phi Delta Kappan, 92(5), 21.
This article discusses second options for students who decide not to complete high school
and the rates of students who do not complete high school. The research in this article
was published in 2011 and also provides statistics on how many people completed high
school. It is relevant because it provides dropout rates based on the type of school they
attended. The Back on Track template is also relevant to my topic by stating ways to get
back on track and complete high school. This article is useful to my research because it
provides statistics and shows how numbers are rising. It also includes secondary options
that I plan to provide to use to provide options for people who have dropped out. It is
important to include not only the problem but also different ways we can improve the
statistics.

Swanson, C. B. (2012). Graduation Rate Keeps Climbing; Strong Gains for Latino Students.
Education Week, 31(34), 25-27.

This article talks about graduation rates rising up for all students but mostly Latino
students. It includes the rising trend of how many people are graduating based on
ethnicity. This article is relevant because it includes the gaps between ethnicity and
people who have graduated. It is also relevant to my research topic because it talks about
high school graduation rates nationwide. I plan to use this to compare it to the statistics in
Texas and more specifically the El Paso community. This is important because it is
related to our community and affects the El Paso community directly. I plan to use the
map that is used to show the high school graduation rates and the class first reported.
