None, however the successful completion of Clinic Observation, Semester 1 is prerequisite for
advancement into Clinic Observation : Semester 2.

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

Observation I begins the supervised, practical clinical experience. It is here that students begin to learn about
becoming a true practitioner of Chinese medicine. This understanding goes to the heart of the philosophy that there
is an essential unity of thought and action: "Knowledge is the beginning of action, and action is the completion of
knowledge. Learning to be a sage involves only one effort. Knowledge and action should not be separated." (Wang
Yang-Ming) Each student will begin to learn and experience truths and abilities in diagnostics, needling, and
treatment techniques, ethics, and practice management.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

During the first semester in Clinic Observation, students come to the clinic for an introduction to clinical
practice. They will learn relevant clinical protocol and procedures. Students will begin to accumulate
practical experience and develop an appreciation for both the art and science of acupuncture.

COURSE COMPETENCIES

Upon completion of this course, student will be able to:

! Describe how the various theories they are learning are applied during treatment.
! Explain how interns outline a treatment plan.
! Discuss equipment and safety in the clinic.
! Discuss selection, maintenance, inspection of electronic equipment.
! Distinguish, compare, and describe the uses of needles: gauges, types, selection, replacement, inspection.
! Explain the use of: cupping, moxa, and seven star needle.
! Explain the necessity of asepsis, Clean Needle Technique and various methods of sterilization.
! Summarize relevant State and Federal regulations concerning equipment & safety.
! Discuss avoiding harm from typical procedures: needling, moxa, cupping, bloodletting, etc.
! Perform first aid & fainting aid during treatment.
! Determine personal and office standards of cleanliness and hygiene.

GRADES

Grades for the course will be determined upon the completion of all semester course requirements.
100 pt scale: 90-100 pts A; 80-89 pts B; 70-79 pts C; less than 69 pts F; 89.5 pts is an A-, 79.5 pts is a B-.
and 69.5 pts is a C-. All semester coursework and hours must be completed and received by the last
day of the semester, otherwise student will receive an F for the semester.
