#IMPAIRED
IMPAIRED DRIVING
In 2012, 10.3 million people reported driving under the influence of illicit drugs (Substance Abuse and Mental
Health). Impaired driving is an issue that is not really discussed anymore. Most people laugh about impaired
driving and never think that they could be in a car accident due to them, or someone else driving under the
influence of drugs/alcohol. Linda Chapman's laughter turned to tears on June 5, 2004, when a drunk driver
slammed into a car carrying her daughter, Nicki Chapman, who was only 25 years old. Unfortunately, the crash
killed Nicki. Nicki was a University of Dubuque graduate (Wiedemann). I believe that many people do not know
some of the damages and harms that impaired driving can hold.
The purpose of this project is to raise awareness of impaired driving. Turning Point offers assistance to those
experiencing legal, employment, school, family and/or medical problems related to drugs and alcohol. By
increasing the awareness of impaired driving and letting the audience know that there are places to go for
treatment through Mercy Turning Point Treatment Center; I will help those who have problems with drugs and
alcohol.
IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE
Through an Immersive Experience, I will be showing the audience the dangers and harms that impaired driving
can have. The name of this project is #Impaired. An immersive experience can be a highly visual site/ scene that
completely grasp your attention. When you arrive to the site/location, you're immediately submerged in the
subject matter, hence the term "immersive." The audience will go through various stations that will show different
effects of impaired driving.

STAKEHOLDERS
Of course with any project, there will be people that may be
opposed to the idea. Groups of people and/or individuals who
will directly effect or be affected by this project:
Families that have dealt with someone who suffered
from substance abuse
The victims of impaired driving will also be affected
by this project,
The audience members who will hopefully attend this
experience will leave well- informed and willing to act and
help those that are looking for treatment. In order for this
project to be successful I will get permission from Mercy to
use their name, the faculty/ staff of the University of Dubuque
to ensure that I am taking appropriate measures such as
booking rooms and being cautious of safety hazards.

In order for this project to be successful I will need a lot of materials and volunteers to get my message across to the
audience. I will need car part donations; I will be going around to different junkyards throughout the Dubuque area
for these donations. I will also need to advertise for this event. I will be putting together flyers and will get those
distributed throughout campus and the Dubuque community. Technical supplies such as lights will be done with the
help of the University of Dubuque Theatre Department. The actors/actresses, and dancers will be volunteers from the
University of Dubuque campus.
