Marlene Haupert - Family and Consumer Sciences

The Family and Consumer Sciences group met in small group session in which
discussion was held on the programs being offered in the HMS and SHS school system.
Discussion was held on how Perkins has benefited our programs this year. HMS

purchased some written materials on the ProStart program in which Kylee is integrating
into her classes this year. She is just using some of the material. The SHS program
purchased an induction stove so now all students will be exposed and trained on
induction, electric and gas stoves.
Discussion was held on what we are teaching in our individual classrooms. HMS has
both a middle and high school program while Sheldon just has a high school program.
Critical competencies for both programs have remained the same as last year.
Discussion was held on assessments.
Amy worked with us and informed us what needed to be upgraded in our binders. New
tabs will be sent and the binder just needs to be rearranged. She reminded us to be
sure to include the FCS standards and benchmarks matrix in the binder. The critical
competencies are listed on a separate document. She also told us to be sure to have 3
assessments for each critical competency. Neither of our binders had much to be
updated.
Amanda De Groot - Business
The business teachers from Sheldon and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn showed the advisory
committee their Program of Study binders. The college would like us to include more
student projects and work the students are completing along the way to show they are
not just mastering the content by the end of the course. The college also recommended
that we complete the template to show how we are teaching more standards in our
courses than what our paperwork currently shows. The committee was happy with what
we currently have.
Then the teachers shared the classes each teach. The committee members continued
to stress the importance of communication skills. We also discussed workplace attire
and how that appears to be changing even though the standard of traditional business
attire is expected. The business teachers brought up the fact that in Accounting we are
doing a lot more through paper and pencil to help the students reinforce the basic skills
that are necessary. Neither teacher is doing a lot on the computer and the committee
seems ok with that. Finally, a committee member mentioned that a bank would like to
be able to set up a job shadow experience for high school students. This is a project
that the Human Resource Manager is dreaming of. It has yet to be fully developed but
this is something we can see as a possibility down the road. This would be helpful to
make the connection as the students get ready to enter the world of work.
Matt Meendering (for Monica Dykstra) Medical Technology
Discussed the curriculum content and what the POS binder included. We went through
page by page the content of the binder. Questions were raised how and where the
standards came from and those questions were answered. Both individuals gave their
input on what they saw from our students during their clinicals in the CNA classes and
those doing job shadows in our Career Pathways course. Maturity is always an issue,
so we need to make sure the youngest we could go in the program is a junior to be on
the floor. We also discussed the need to get more of our Hispanic students into the
program. This year we have two Hispanic students enrolled in the CNA course and they
are the only two in the strand currently. This will be a focus for us when we counsel
students in the future to help them understand that this is a very viable option for
growth.
