detail.
(See the Template with Notes for specifics about
each section.)
DAY: October 4, 2015
SUBJECT: Math
TIME: 12:30 to 1:45
TOPIC: Addition and Subtraction
UNIT TITLE: Bowling with Math

STANDARD(S)/OBJECTIVE(S)/ASSESSMENT(S):
STANDARD(S):
Standard 2.7 Physical Education-- Candidates know, understand, and use-- as
appropriate to their own understanding and skills--human movement and physical
activity as a central element to foster active, healthy life styles and enhanced
quality of life for elementary students.
1.ATO.1 Solve real world/story problems using addition (as a joining action and as a
part-part whole action) and subtraction (as a separation action, finding the parts of
the whole, as a comparison) through 20 with unknowns in all positions.
1.ATO.4 Understand subtraction as an unknown addend problem
1.ATO.5 recognize how counting relates to addition and subtraction.
1.ATO.6 Demonstrate: Addition and subtraction through 20 & fluency with addition
and related subtraction facts through 10
OBJECTIVE(S): The student will be able to complete and pass an
assessment on addition and subtraction using the bowling activity as a
guide.
ASSESSMENT DETAILS: For the assessment, the student will complete a 10
question quiz on addition and subtraction. 5 addition problems and 5
subtraction problems.
CRITERIA FOR MASTERY OF ASSESSMENT(S): The student must make an 8 out
of 10 on the assessment for a score of 80%
KEY VOCABULARY/CONCEPTS:
1. Addition- the process of adding something to something else
2. Subtraction- the process of taking one number or amount away from
another

MATERIALS:
TEACHER MATERIALS NEEDED: 10 plastic water bottles, small beach ball,
notepad (score), pencil/pen
STUDENT MATERIALS NEEDED: pencil & paper

STEP BY STEP PROCEDURES:

INTRODUCTION:
Attention Getter: Ask students "How many of you like to bowl?"
Overview: "Today we are going to learn addition and subtraction through
bowling with water balls and a small beach ball."

Purpose: The purpose of learning addition and subtraction, with the

assistance of bowling. It is important for students to learn how to add and
subtract because it follows them for the rest of their lives.
Relevance: The relevance of this lesson is to help students understand
addition and subtraction and give a perfect example of how it is used on a
daily basis: bowling.
Expectations: The students should remain attentive while each student is
bowling. The students are to work well together and be able to perform
the tasks given to them. The students are expected to listen while the
teacher is teaching and as well as when their classmates are trying to
solve their bowling problems. The students are expected to ask questions
should they have any and help out another student if he/she may need it.
LESSON DEVELOPMENT:
Modeling: I will present the class with the information and importance of
addition and subtraction with every day life examples such as bowling,
buying groceries, in grades to follow and cooking. Then, when it is time
for the bowling activity I will model how to bowl and how to line up each
bottle for each station. Each student will be allowed to bowl 10 times
taking turns with each group member. The scores will be kept by bowiling
once and subtracting how many bottles were knocked down by the total
bottles that were standing. That total will be the score for that first round,
this process will be repeated each time the student bowls for 10 times. On
the tenth bowl, the students will add up their total amount and that will
be their overall score We will stay in our stations until each student has
bowled ten times and has their scores added and proof of work on their
score sheet. We will then come together as a class and see who scored the
highest score!
Guided Practice: I will group the students in groups of 4. Each group will
bowl together and assist each team member if one gets stuck with their
addition or subtraction part of the activity. Once the students have bowled
10 bowls and have their work on the score sheet neatly printed and well
understood we will move back to our seats and discuss as a class who had
the highest score and I will then answer any questions the students may
have.
ASSESSMENT/CLOSURE:
For the closure of this activity I will issue the students a 10 question quiz
on addition and subtraction. The students will not be able to discuss with
class members. Afer the quiz is given the students will complete it, hand it
in, and return to their seats and indulge themselves in silent sustained
reading until each individual is finished with his/her quiz.
Connections to future lessons/subjects:
For a science lesson we could add water or sand to the bottles and
practice force and motion. Letting the kids find out how much force to add
to the ball to make the water bottles fall over.

SPECIAL ACCOMODATIONS:
RATES OF LEARNING:
Tasks for early finishers: Students who finish the bowling activity

early will return to their seats and check their addition and
subtraction results from bowling and sit quietly while other
classmates are finishing their bowling. Students who finish their quiz
early will get out their AR reading book and perform silent sustained
reading.
Provisions for those who struggle or need more time: For students
who need more time with their addition and subtraction there will be
a provided time at the beginning of the next class.

ABILITY LEVELS:
Tasks for advanced learners: Students with advanced learning will
help those other students who struggle more. I will evenly divide the
teams to have those who struggle and those who are more advanced
to help.
Tasks for struggling learners: Students that struggle to learn will be
grouped with more advanced students incase they need help with
their tasks on addition and subtration.
LEARNING STYLES:
VISUAL: Visual learners will be able to see the examples given at the
beginning of the class of the reason for importance of addition and
subtraction.
AUDITORY: Auditory learners will be able to hear me present the
material verbally.
KINESTHETIC/TACTILE: Kinesthetic learners will be able to perform
the bowling acitivity and learn addition and sibtraction.
SPECIAL NEEDS:
IEP: Students will be encouraged to ask questions.
504: Students will be encouraged to ask questions.

LESSON ATTACHMENTS:
Attach documents used during lesson. (Materials, Presentation Files, Assessments
(with keys), Rubrics, etc...
