1. Nataliewasverysharpandwasabletodothisassessmentwithoutmuchtrouble.Ialso
noticedthatIshouldnothaveacknowledgedhercorrectanswers.Icouldhavestayed
silentandmovedontothenextproblem.
2. ItwasalittledifficulthearingsomeofWillsanswersbecausehehasabitofalisp.I
knowthatWilldidagoodjobofsoundingoutthewordsifhedidnotknowthem.He
triedtosaysomeofthewordsfromthenextpagebeforehereachedthelevelof

longsoundsandsometimeswiththe/e/shortandlongsounds.Healsohadsome
troublewiththe/i/longandshortsounds.Alittletroublealsowiththe/e/attheend
ofwords.
3. MarleestartedhavingsometroublewhenwereachedtheGrade2column.Hewould
needtoworkonthe/e/soundsandthe/a/sounds.Forexample,hesaidsand instead
ofsend,butitmighthavejustbeenthathewasnotpronouncinghiswordclearly
enough.HehadsometroublewiththeGrade3wordsaswell.Hesaidmodent for
moment,frighted insteadoffrightened,lonly insteadoflonely,sist instead
ofsince andstrike insteadofstraight.Hewouldneedtoworkonslowingdown
andmakingsuretoseethewholewordandpronounceeverysound.

oftesting.Sheconcentratedwell,evenwhentherewasanotherteachertestinga
studentintheroomwithus.
2. Willbehavedwellintheassessment.Hedidhaveabitofaroughtimefocusingwhen
thestudentsstartedgettingoutforrecess.Towardtheendoftheassessment,Will
struggledwithsomeofthewordsandwasdisplayingfrustrationanduncertainty.
3. Marleewasveryconfidentgoingintothisassessment.Heconqueredthefirst3
columnswithease,andseemedeagertomoveontothenextsetofwords.Duringhis
assessmentofthelasttwocolumnswherehestruggled,hedisplayedabitof
frustrationandwasreadyforthetesttobeover.

Iassessed3studentsfrommymasterteachers2ndgradeclass.NataliedidthePhonemic
Awarenessassessment,WilldidthePhonicsandDecodingassessment,andMarleedidtheSan
DiegoQuick.Theyareall2ndgradestudents.ThePhonemicAwarenessassessmenttook8:01,
thePhonicsandDecodingtook5:35,andtheSanDiegoQuicktook2:19.
