Description of artifact and how the artifact meets the standard:
I had an opportunity to attend a Kim Sutton math conference with fellow teachers this past March. It was an
all-day conference focused on math fact fluency. At this conference we learned several different activities to
encourage this fluency for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. These activities can easily
be altered to reach various ability levels. In addition to learning about the activities, we played the games
ourselves. This was beneficial because I was able to discuss the game, and how I could use it in my classroom,
with a fellow teacher.

Reflection on artifact:
The conference was the first I had attended as a teacher. I had heard quite a bit about Kim Sutton during a
student teaching placement as well as through substitute teaching experience. I was excited to represent my
team at such an event. One idea that I learned through the conference is to make a conscious effort to have fun
while teaching math. Math can be very difficult for some students, if there is little active engagement it can be
even more difficult. Kim Sutton incorporates music and a fun attitude to engage learners. This attitude is one I
have taken on when I teach math. I enjoy math and I am encouraging my students to enjoy the content as
well.
I will continue to encourage students to be actively engaged in their learning in all content areas. I also plan to
use more of the activities and concepts I have learned to help my students in as many ways as I can. Using
different approaches to teaching the materials will benefit students with a variety of learning styles and
academic ability levels.
