Define Local acceleration and Convective acceleration?
State Bernoullis Equation for ideal incompressible fluid?
Differentiate pitot tube and pitot-static tube?
Explain the losses in the fluid flow?

Define the terms Suction head, Static head and Delivery heads?
What is a reciprocating pump? What are the classifications of reciprocating
pumps?

a) Explain the classification of fluids?

(2M)
b) A shaft of diameter 98 mm is rotating inside a journal bearing of diameter 100 mm
at a speed of 360 r.p.m. The space between the shaft and bearing is filled with
lubricating oil of viscosity 5 poise. The length of the bearing is 250 mm. Find the
power absorbed in the lubricating oil.
(8M)
c) A rectangular plane surface is 2 m wide and 3m deep. It lies in vertical plane in
water. Determine the total pressure and position of centre of pressure on the
plane surface when its upper edge is 2.5 m below the free water surface.
(5M)

a) Derive an expression for measuring discharge using venturimeter?

(7M)
b) An orificemeter with orifice diameter 15 cm is inserted in a pipe of 30 cm diameter.
The pressure difference measured by a mercury oil differential manometer on the
two sides of the orificemeter gives a reading of 50 cm of mercury. Find the rate of
flow of oil of sp. gr. 0.9. Take Cd = 0.64.
(8M)

a) State and explain the impulse momentum equation? Explain its applications? (7M)
b) A horizontal pipe line 40 m long is connected to a water tank at one end and
discharges freely into the atmosphere at the other end. For the first 25 m of its
length from the tank, the pipe is 150 mm diameter and its diameter is suddenly
enlarged to 300 mm. The height of water level in the tank is 8 m above the center
of the pipe. Considering all losses of head which occur, determine the rate of flow.
Take f = 0.01 for both sections of the pipe.

a) Derive an expression for the force exerted by the jet on the stationary inclined flat
vane.
(7M)
b) A jet of water having a velocity of 20 m/s strikes a curved vane, which is moving
with a velocity of 10 m/s. The jet makes an angle of 20 0 with the direction of
motion of the vane at inlet and leaves at an angle of 1300 to the direction of
motion of vane at outlet. Calculate:
i) Vane angles, so that the water enters and leaves the vane without shock.
ii) Work done per unit weight of water striking the vane per second
(8M)

a) Derive an expression for the work done per second by water on the runner of a
Pelton wheel. And find the condition for maximum efficiency.
(7M)
b) A Kaplan turbine working under a head of 20 m develops 11772 kW shaft power.
The outer diameter of the runner is 3.5 m and hub diameter is 1.75 m. the guide
blade angle at the extreme edge of the runner is 35 0. The hydraulic and overall
efficiencies of the turbine are 88% and 84% respectively. If the velocity of whirl is
zero at outlet, determine:
i) Runner vane angles at inlet and outlet at the extreme edges of the runner, and
ii) Speed of the turbine.
(8M)

a) Describe the principle and working of a reciprocating pump with a neat sketch(7M)
b) A centrifugal pump having outer diameter equal to two times the inner diameter
and running at 1000 r.p.m. works against a total head of 40 m. The velocity of flow
through the impeller is constant and equal to 2.5 m/s. The vanes are set back at
angle of 400 at outlet. If the outer diameter of the impeller is 500 mm and width at
outlet is 50 mm, determine:
i) Vane angle at inlet,
ii) Work done by impeller on water per second, and
iii) Manometric efficiency.
