Course Description:
Building on their work with linear, quadratic, and exponential functions, students extend
their repertoire of functions to include polynomial, rational, radical, logarithmic, and
trigonometric functions. Students work closely with the expressions that define the
functions, and continue to expand and hone their abilities to model situations and to
solve equations, including solving quadratic equations over the set of complex numbers
and solving exponential equations using the properties of logarithms. Students identify
appropriate types of functions to model a situation, they adjust parameters to improve
the model, and they compare models by analyzing appropriateness of fit and making
judgments about the domain over which a model is a good fit. Students also see how
the visual displays and summary statistics they learned in earlier grades relate to
different types of data and to probability distributions. They identify different ways
of collecting data including sample surveys, experiments, and simulationsand the role
that randomness and careful design play in the conclusions that can be drawn.
Required Materials:
Students will need to bring the items listed below to class:
1. three ring binder
2. dividers
3. lots and lots of pencils all work will be done in pencil
Each student will have access to a TI-84 Plus graphing calculator for classroom use.
Purchasing a graphing calculator is optional.
Classroom Conduct:
All school and county rules will be enforced in this class. Three basic foundations for a
positive learning environment include respect, responsibility, and achievement.

Make up Work:
Make up work is a student responsibility. When you return from being absent, get your
missed work from the make up work folder. It will have your name on it. All make up work
should be completed within 5 days.
Homework:
Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday nights. Assignments are not
intended to be lengthy, but a short review of skills from that day or a previous day.
Homework will be graded on a combination of effort and accuracy. No credit will be
given for homework assignments that do not show the work needed to solve the given
problems.
Grading System:
All grades are based on a cumulative point system. An assignment or assessment will be
worth a certain number of points depending on its length and/or difficulty. Grade reports
will be sent home periodically. If at any time you have a question or concern about your
grade, I will be happy to discuss it with you at an appropriate time.
Binders:
Students are expected to keep an organized binder throughout the semester. The binder
should be divided into sections: warm ups, notes, class work/homework, quizzes. Binders
will be checked periodically for completeness and organization.
Assessments:
Students will be notified about assessments in advance. Most assessments will be
announced, but occasionally there will be a pop quiz. County benchmark assessments will
also be administered based on the county assessment calendar.
