THE NEXT EINSTEIN CAMP

1.0 INTRODUCTION
The Next Einsteins Camp is one of the programs that specially designed for sciences
students which is form 4 of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kelana Jaya,Selangor to develop
their preparation skills and give them awareness about science beauty concept in science. The
main reason or objectives of our camps is to develop a strong concept in learning
science and enhanced student interest in learning and exploring the science
Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). This camp named as The Next Einstein Camp as the symbolic
from one of the famous pedagogical in physics. In this camp, the important element that we
stressed is the concept in understanding the sciences theoretical in other words mastery the
concept will help students become more excited to know and learn in deep about the science.
The background of this camp are focuses on the sciences element. To present that
every activity have been done according to the understanding on the
concept that have been learn. To encourage student relationship in term of
intrapersonal in which work cooperatively among the group members on
completing an activity .In this camp, the participants respond is very important to make
sure that the objectives of the programmed will successfully achieved. The target group for this
camp is for form four science class. This program is ensuring all students to have improvement
performance during the programmed as well as in future. By participating these planning, the
schools science students who join this camp are able to set their mind and goal target to prepare
themselves to achieve and fulfill the Malaysia Education Blueprint. Therefore, our programs will
emphasize on science context during gaming, cooperative learning and talk from their senior.
The camp is will be done in two days which is Saturday and Friday with conducted by
teachers and facilitators. The total of students involve in this camp is 30 students. The
background of this camp are focuses on the sciences element. The financial cost in organize this
camp are sponsored by PIBG and JPN. During the camp run, students will provide the certificate,
food and drinks, files and any requirement. If the internal motivations of students improve in
science subject, we hope that this knowledge will use and apply for other subject. This camp are
provide two in one objectives actually in which the motivation aspect and the mastery concept of
science.

THE NEXT EINSTEIN CAMP

2.0 RATIONALE
The idea in design The Next Einstein Camp came from the overview of the level
student performance in science subject in which this subject are important. For the science
subject, students should pass the level in examination to help students further their studies with
get a good course after SPM. However, the camp not only to improve the student performance in
science academic but here in this camp program are more stressed on the students cognitive
thinking whereby we provide the useful activity and motivation for every subject in encourage
their interests toward science . In other words, we want to build spirit of positive thinking
towards science as well as their understanding will drive them to apply and relates with the daily
life activity.
Our target students are form 4 because we know that students form four are in
honeymoon mood and still have lack of awareness about science for their preparation in SPM.
From that, we conduct the survey questionnaires before the camp starts as the analysis of needs
in to identify the level of perception of student form 4 about science subject. From the survey
results, we found that the interests towards science are lower and we define that students are not
enjoyed during the sciences learning. Moreover, we found that student are did not get
the concept in learning science stream subject. From here, we know what the
most important things that we should repair and improve their concepts in
science and their perception towards science subject.
In The Next Einstein Camp program, the mission and vision to
encourage students participate our camp is to give them an awareness
about the science which give students positive thinking, motivate them to
use cognitive thinking and expose them science application. The three
subjects sciences are provided in this camp are Biology, Chemistry and
Physics. Through this camp, students will realize that the nature beauty of
science that related with our daily life.
As conclusion, we hope that our target students, Form 4 Sekolah
Menengah Kebangsaan Kelana Jaya, Selangor will enjoys this camp and our

learning outcome from this program can motivate them in learning science
as preparation in SPM.

be seen in two month of monthly test of March and July. From the both figure
above, it show the declining result of three science stream subject which is
biology, physics and chemistry. As the purpose of designing this course as an
alternative to overcome the problem of declining a result in biology,
chemistry and physic subject among form four students in Sekolah
Menengah Kebangsaan Kelana Jaya, Selangor.
In order to design this course that can fit to the problems, a need
analysis has been carried out through a set of questionnaire given to the
student include Yes and No question. The objective of this questionnaire is
to determine the need of student that will be constructing into this course.
The need analysis was conducted on September 2015 before this proposal
submitted. This questionnaire was distributed to 30 students. Below are the

Figure 3.7
On the last question that have been ask on the question survey about
which subject that they are more interesting in learning science stream
subject. The answer are regarding to three division of science steam subject
which is Biology, Chemistry and Physics. From the graphs above, we can see
biology graph has lead by total number of 22 student interest in biology
subject. Follow by chemistry subject represent by 12 students and a least
number of student in physic subject by 6 students.
After the full analysis have been done through this five question, It
shows that why the student achievement are declining in the first monthly
test. They are actually having an interest to learn the science stream
subject. Because of that they are not get the concept in learning science
stream subject, it give them an impression that this science stream subject
are too difficult. And they are not enjoying in learning it. And they feel
worried that they cannot score on those entire three subjects.

THE NEXT EINSTEIN CAMP

10

From this survey, we can conclude that the students are in need to
reconstruct their mind setting towards the science stream subject that
actually its not too difficult if they understand the concept behind it. When
they have got the concept on what they are learning, it would develop their
interest in learning those entire subjects. Based on the information that we
get, we believe that student can improve their achievement. Through this
course, we would stress on enhancing student interest in learning science.

This activity are involving student to build their bridge model by

using a piece of newspaper. From their models, student should be able
to grab the concept of force and pressure as they need to build a
stabilize bridge model. The model should be able to hold the amount of
force on it.

3.7 Methodology
Methodology that has been used in The Next Einsteins Camp is very
important to make sure that the participant can get as much as the input
from this program and for the overall it may achieve the objective from the
formation of this program. Before we choose the suitable method that may
be apply to this program, we make a survey to see what the needs of
student are to make it relevant to the objective of this program. So that, we
can design the program appropriately that merge to the needs.
The instructions to be implementing in this program are more to
student-centered instruction. From this type of instructional, students have
more time on completing the task given. And student should work
cooperatively among the group members. Students are given a chance to
study and experience through the activity that have been design for them by
their own. This kind of instructional may help student to develop their
cognitive thinking and creative thinking through the overall task.
We emphasize small scale of teacher-centered instruction through the
talk session on the first day of program. The student received a lot of
information from the invited panel. During the talk session, students are
exposed to the real experience from the panel. Students are also given the
opportunity to ask any question to the panel. By this way, students are

THE NEXT EINSTEIN CAMP

14

actually exposed to develop their soft skill when they are tending to be
communicative towards other people.

3.8 Evaluation
`The evaluations are important to be conducted. But we tend to do this
evaluation three times only. As an example the activity were divided
according to the three subjects. Below of these subject will contain two
activities. After the last activities for that subject are complete, then the
evaluation will be conducted before they are going to move to the next
activity for the next subject. The evaluation will be in a questionnaire form
and it will distribute to student for them to answer it.
It will contain several questions that consist of questions regarding to
the several aspects, which is module, facilitator, facilities and others that
related. From the data that we get from this survey, we can know where the
weaknesses and it the facilitators will try to find out the way to fix the
problem. This is important to reflect either the objective on that task is
achieved by the student. And any of suggestion from the evaluation must be
useful as a reference in the future. The sample of questionnaire is at the
appendix.

4.2 Venue
The venue is Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kelana Jaya, Selangor.
This is because, one of the Science teacher from this school contact the
president of Science Education Society (SEEDS) since the result of students
from this school in three science subjects; biology, chemistry and physics are
dropped in two month of monthly test of March and July. Before we conduct
our program, we do a need analysis in order to determine do the students
need our program to enhance their result in Science. The venue gives
advantage to us because the venue has the equipments that are already
available. Thus this can meet the needs of the activities that have been
arranged. This school already has their own hostel which is really important
as we will run this program until night, thus the students and facilitators can
sleep in the schools hostel. Furthermore, considering the large space of the
hall, it can provide students to freely move for the activities which required
space and also they can learn in comfortable condition and environment. In
short, we believe that the students would be able to participate well with
programs and the facilitators also be able to manage and can run all the
programs and activities without any difficulties and would be able to suit
themselves here as well.

4.3 Facilities
Less cost and comfortable are the main benefit to our program at
Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kelana Jaya, Selangor. This school provides
all the equipments that are needed to run this program. The equipments
such as PA system including microphone and speaker, projectors, LCD, white
board, fan, chairs and tables are already available which will really help both
facilitators and participants. All of these facilities are very important in
grabbing students attentions. Moreover, a mosque is also built in the middle

of the school to let the participants perform their prayers comfortably. There
is also school canteen available not too far from the schools hall where can
be used as place for the participants to have their meals during the program.
This can save the time for the participants to have their meal and come back
to the schools hall.

4.4 Facilitators
There will be five facilitators as the leader and 10 facilitators who will
be facilitate all the 30 students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kelana
