The Spencer Davis Group est un groupe de rock britannique, originaire de Birmingham (Royaume-Uni), fond
en 1963 par Spencer Davis avec Stevie Winwood et son
frre Mu.

Histoire

Stevie Winwood tait auparavant leader du Rhythm and

blues Quartet, jouant volontiers du jazz, et accompagnait des pointures du blues telles que Memphis Slim,
Champion Jack Dupree... Il devint l'organiste du Spencer
Davis Group, avec son orgue Hammond, aux sonorits
chaudes, il tait aussi guitariste. Sa voix semblable celle
des bluesmen noirs amricains attirait l'attention.

Ce groupe tait compos en outre de Spencer Davis

la guitare, Mu Winwood (le frre an de Stevie) la
basse, et de Peter York la batterie. Parmi leurs succs,
citons Keep on running, Somebody help me, Dust my blues,
Midnight special et Gimme Some Lovin (entre autres).
noter aussi l'interprtation de Georgia on my mind (voir
Ray Charles) et de Nobody Knows You When You're Down
and Out, un classique du blues noir amricain, sans oublier leurs tubes I'm a man qu'allait reprendre en 1969
le groupe amricain Chicago Transit Authority (aux inuences jazz) et Gimme some lovin' dans le lm The Blues
Brothers en 1980.
Steve Winwood forma par la suite d'autres groupes importants comme Trac en 1967, Blind Faith en 1969
avant de poursuivre une carrire solo aprs 1975.
