"WithoutWords" the show/presenta on

of Asemic 15 magazine
The exhibi on features the works from new issue of the Australian magazine
Asemic, dedicated to asemic wri ng the movement within the contemporary
avant-garde. Tim Gaze, the magazines editor, one of the pioneers of the genre,
collected the works created over the last 7 years by authors from all around the
world.
Asemic wri ng can be dened as a form of calligraphy that uses unreadable characters and symbols that do not belong to any exis ng language. Asemic authors use
doodles, scratches and unusual symbols to express meanings and transgress
language barriers. Spontaneous manifesta ons of asemic wri ng can be found in
the Renaissance, but it took shape as an independent art movement at the beginning of the XXI century in Australia and the USA, and then spread throughout the
world.
Asemic wri ng quickly became one of popular genres in contemporary avant-garde
and interested many ar sts, theorists and writers developing the ideas of the avant
-garde of the twen eth century.
The rst issue of Asemic was released in late 90s and included works three authors: Tim Gaze, Jim Le wich and Tom van den Bok. The new issue published in
September 2015 features works by 44 authors from 16 countries. The release of
the magazine is one of the turning points of history of asemic wri ng. It allowed to
show the diversity of ideas, techniques and approaches within the movement.
"If we can nd ways to surpass individual languages, humans will feel more included in a unied whole." - said Tim Gaze. Other par cipants of asemic movement
develop their own ways of interpreta on of this idea. Some of them are presented
at the exhibi on "WithoutWords".
