Message From Presidente Dayton

An Exciting Goal to Start the New Year 2016

During the first Missionary Leadership Council (Concilio) of 2016 held this last Monday,
the Assistants gave an inspiring presentation on how thinking constantly about a deeply-desired goal
makes it much more likely that we will be able to attain that goal! They then applied that attitude to
how we think about baptism, the most highly desired goal of everyone in El Faro. They powerfully made
their point that we need to be thinking constantly about what we must do to baptize regularly and
consistently. They then slipped off their jackets revealing the word baptize or the symbol for baptism
written over 100 times on their shirt, tie and sweater. They then slipped off their sweater and 200 pieces
of paper fell to the ground, each having the word baptize on it. They then gave each of us a white
stone with the symbol for baptism written on it and admonished us to remember the story of the brother
of Jared, the stones which lit the barges and how his faith was so strong he could move mountains! The
strength of our faith is crucial in us being able to baptize regularly. Their point was well-made. Elders
and Hermanas, the Assistants are rightwe need to be thinking constantly about what we need to do
to bring our Heavenly Fathers children into the waters of baptism.
Every mission has its own culture with its own wonderful traditions. In El Faro, we have a tradition of
hard work, obedience and baptizing. If someone were to ask us to fill in the blank, In this mission, we
_________! my hope is that the operative word would be baptize. With the guidance of the Lord and
the work and obedience of the missionaries, this is blessed to be a baptizing missionit is what we do.
We expect to baptize regularly and often. Of course, our motivation for baptizing must be very pure
not for numbers, not for acclaim, not for reasons of pride, and not for personal glory. It isnt about us
and never has been. We need to feel exactly like Alma when he exclaimed, Behold, O Lord, their
souls are precious, and many of them are our brethren; therefore, give unto us, Lord, power and
wisdom that we may bring these, our brethren, again unto thee. The sons of Mosiah had the same
deep-seated love for their fellow man as expressed in Mosiah 28:3, Now they were desirous that
salvation should be declared to every creature, for they could not bear that any human soul should
perish; yea, even the very thoughts that any soul should endure endless torment did cause them to
quake and tremble.
After much prayerful discussion, we then presented our goal for the start of 2016that EVERY
COMPANIONSHIP baptize at least once in either January or February (one baptism for every
companionship over the next 60 days). In other words 50% of all companionships baptize in January
and the other 50% baptize in February. If we do this, we will be right on task to baptize 12 people per
week or 600 per year. While it is a goal that will stretch us, it is doable---one baptism for EVERY
companionship some time in the next 2 months (January and February). I hope all El Faro missionaries
will catch the vision of this goal and be about the business of their Father. If baptism is foremost among
our thought at all times, we work hard and remain obedient, we can accomplish this reasonable and
realistic goal.
Con mucho animo para el Ano Nuevo,
Presidente Merril T. Dayton

Message From Hermana Dayton

Determniation vs. Faintheartedness

Determination is accomplishing the right goals, at the right time, regardless of the opposition. In the
scriptures we see many examples of people who had the strong determination to follow
God, and went to great lengths to serve Him. Nephi showed determination in getting the brass
plates, Alma was determined to share the Gospel, Noah was determined to build the ark, Moses was
determined to save the Israelites, and Joseph Smith was determined to share the Gospel with the
whole world.
Philippians 3:14 we read, "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God. Jessie
Evans Smith said, "Happiness is doing what needs to be done when it needs to be done whether you
like it or not." When we do things when they need to be done and push through overwhelming
obstacles with determination to accomplish them, we feel a great sense of accomplishment. Brian
Tracy, a leading author and speaker on human potential said, "If I had to pick the #1 key to success,
it would be... self discipline." One quality that most philosophers, teachers and experts agree on is the
importance of self self-discipline with determination to do what ever it takes to accomplish a worthy
goal or desire.
We can apply determination to missionary work by:

Doing whatever it takes to achieve mission goals and pautas.

Focusing on the ten points of the Vision of the Mission and giving our all out effort.
Sticking with a task to the end.
Striving to achieve maximum unity in our companionship so the spirit can be with us.

President Dayton and I are very inspired by the determination we see in so many of you. We see you
work hard, diligently, and with determination to find those whom we can bring to Christ. We pray for
you each day and feel so honored to be working with you in this important calling to bring others to
the Savior.

The Miracle of Baptism

Hmmm...this week was

BAPTISM! We were blessed

with the baptism of Nicolle this
past week and what a
miraculous change and step
forward for their family! Two
weeks ago the mom of Nicolle
told us we couldn't return to
her house again, and many
other things happened too, we
fasted for her mom to have a
change of heart and the lord
softened her heart and she
allowed her daughter to be
baptized. Nicolle finally took
the step that she was ready to
take and was baptized this
week! The baptismal service
was smooth and spiritual! It
was a miracle in our eyes!

This week we were blessed to

be a part of Enci's baptism. I'm
so grateful that I've been
called here to be a small part
in this family's journey, but in all
reality we haven't done hardly
anything. She has done
everything she needed to
receive an answer that the
Church is true, and now she's
acting on that answer. We only
met her a month ago at Dina's
(her mother in law) baptism. At
the baptism Dina gave a
wonderful talk, the Spirit was
present and powerful. Enci's
husband and son are both
preparing for baptism as well in
the following weeks! I really
love these people, serving
them and learning from their
examples has been such a
blessing.

amazing because we saw the

baptisms of las tres nias--Claudia, Silvia, and Julia. Their
mother lost her faith, but now is
re finding it through the church
and the example of her
daughters. Isn't that so cool? I
can't believe I have a chance
to be a part of it! This family is
Spanish as well. I may never
baptize another Spaniard or
Spanish family again...they're
tooough. It's really thanks to a
devoted and loving member
that we've seen this miracle.
We didn't know they were
getting baptized until
Wednesday when we officially
invited them to be baptized.
They're mom was 100000%
supportive I feel so
privileged to have been a tool
in the hands of God to help
these girls take the first steps
back to their Heavenly Father.

We had a fantastic week.

We were able to see the
miracle of baptism. We were
teaching David all week. It was
very interesting teaching him
with a member and google
translate and trying to make
sentences on our own. It is
great to see how the spirit
testifies of the truth to others. I
remember the lesson we had
with David where we invited
him to be baptized. Right
before he had told us he knew
the Book of Mormon was true
and this was the true church of
Christ. The baptism was great!
The members that spoke were
great. You could feel the spirit
there and there was a special
musical number a member
sang I am a Child of God in
French. It was beautiful. He felt
good afterwards too.

One of the best things that

happened this last week was
actually on...Friday! New
Year's day. We saw Rocio,
Miguel ngel, and Cesar.
WHAT AN AMAZING LESSON.
We taught them the
Restoration and Rocio was
SO excited about the fact
that there is still a living
prophet on the earth today.
She said that to her it makes
sense that God would still
wish us to have a prophet
and it makes sense that God
would want us to have that
guide and direction.
BECAUSE, YEAH, IT MAKES
SENSE. We were so happy
that she was so receptive.
Miguel Anguel prayed at the
end of the lesson and he says
he already feels good about
what we are
teaching. And they both
came to church on Sunday!

This week one of the

miracles that we saw was
with Brigitte. She is the
daughter of Alex and most of
the time we have been
teaching the family she has
been very quiet and
reserved. This last week we
had the whole family for a
lesson and talked on the
restoration. It was truly fun
because we went deep into
it for them. At the end we
talked about how the sealing
power is one of the gifts of
the restoration and gave
them each a little picture of
the Madrid temple and then
invites her to be baptized to
enter in the path for eternal
happiness for herself and her
family. She has a fecha for
the 16.

The Miracle of Baptism

Jaime was baptized!!! Best

New Years ever!!! We found
him two weeks ago And he
couldn't have been baptized
soon enough. He was so
prepared. Just one of those
saints that was prepared to
accept the message. We
contacted his mom on the
street and through her, we
met him and within the first
cita he asked us about
baptism. It lined up perfectly.
God led us to one of his more
than prepared children. His
baptism was incredible, and
then a few hours
after the service, he called us
to tell us just how happy and
good he felt. Our message
changed his life, and his
testimony and our experience
changed mine.The day of his
confirmation I was praying
and thanking Heavenly
Father for the wonderful
experience we had with him,
and up just expressing my
happiness, and a feeling of
pure joy came to me with the
thought of, my son has found
his way home. And he has.
Baptism is not the end, but at
least Jaime is on the right
path. What a miracle!!!

Well, this week was an

emotional roller coaster. We
had incredible success with
our passby plans, knocking
doors, and street contacting.
We were blessed with the
amazing opportunity to find
14 new investigators this
week!!! I dont think Ive ever
found that many news in a
week, or ever imagined that
we could be blessed with that
many new souls to teach.

We saw a huge miracle this

week with a man named
Aurelio. We left piso Saturday
morning and had a lesson to
be to by noon. We just
couldn't find this street
anywhere and everyone was
telling us conflicting things. So
we headed in the direction
we felt was right. As we were
going up this hill I saw this
man and felt the need to
contact him. I looked at my
watch and realized we were
already 20 minutes late for
our visit...so I thought "well I
don't know, we are so late".
Again the prompting came
to make sure I talked to him.
So I said well duh I for sure
have to talk to him! Before I
even had the chance to
open my mouth he stopped
us and said he remembered
me. (Keep in mind I have
never spoken to...let alone
seen this man before.) I
apologized for not
remembering his name and
we got to talking. He said he
had received our card and
was interested in meeting
with us. So we set up a visit for
that night at the church at 8
o'clock. Well time comes
around and he doesn't come
to the church. We give him a
couple calls, he tells us he is
on his way, we wait for a
while, and he finally comes.
We teach him the restoration
and extend the baptismal
invitation with a fecha for the
23 de Enero and.....HE
ACCEPTS! He said he has
been looking for the way to
change his life and he thinks
this is the way to do it.
