Violence Exposure Tutorial User Guide EDTECH 511: Spring 2015

Heather Arenth 2015

Introduction
Abstract
Children are exposed to violence on a fairly regular basis. Exposure to violence can occur within the
family, community, society, media, etc. Children are particularly vulnerable to its impact and are often
in need of supports. These supports can come from professionals, parents, teachers, or any adults
involved in the childs life. But to be able to properly support children and combat the impact violence
can have, one needs to understand violence and consequences of being exposed to violence. To help
prepare individuals to support children, the Violence exposure: Big impact, lasting effects tutorial
focuses on information related to exposure and impact of violence on children. Following a linear
tutorial format, users will be presented information then required to engage in interactive activities or
viewing of videos.

Target Learners
Learners for this tutorial consist of adults ages 18 and older who work in some capacity with children.
These can be teachers, child care staff, social workers, in home visitors, head start staff, etc. With
regards to previous knowledge, learners will have knowledge of child development as well as typical
behaviors to expect at various ages. Learners will also have a basic understanding of the forms of
violence against children (i.e. physical abuse, emotional/verbal abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect). Due
to frequent use of computers and other mobile technologies (smartphones, tablets, etc.) in their
professional and personal lives, learners will be very familiar with various aspects of computer use
(working with a word processor, navigating web pages, searching internet, controlling volume of
speakers, connecting to networks, etc.) and be able to independently use a computer.

Purpose and Objectives

This tutorial focuses on violence exposure in terms of how children are exposed, consequences of this
exposure, factors that increase risk, and social, mental, and behavioral responses exhibited by children.
The goal is to help learners gain knowledge of the impact of violence and understand how to respond
and support children exposed to violence. The following learning objectives are covered in the tutorial:
1. Learners will recognize ways children are exposed to violence.
2. Learners will classify 4 types of violence exposure in terms of how much and the quantity of
children affected.
3. Learners will describe how to meet developmental needs of children exposed to violence.
4. Learners will identify risk factors that can contribute to the development of
unexpected/inappropriate behaviors in children.
5. Learners will illustrate knowledge of behavioral, mental, and social responses associated with
violence exposure.
6. Learners will assess a case study and formulate resolutions to help support the child exposed to
violence.
