Introduction
Abstract
Children are exposed to violence on a fairly regular basis. Exposure to violence can occur within the
family, community, society, media, etc. Children are particularly vulnerable to its impact and are often
in need of supports. These supports can come from professionals, parents, teachers, or any adults
involved in the childs life. But to be able to properly support children and combat the impact violence
can have, one needs to understand violence and consequences of being exposed to violence. To help
prepare individuals to support children, the Violence exposure: Big impact, lasting effects tutorial
focuses on information related to exposure and impact of violence on children. Following a linear
tutorial format, users will be presented information then required to engage in interactive activities or
viewing of videos.
Target Learners
Learners for this tutorial consist of adults ages 18 and older who work in some capacity with children.
These can be teachers, child care staff, social workers, in home visitors, head start staff, etc. With
regards to previous knowledge, learners will have knowledge of child development as well as typical
behaviors to expect at various ages. Learners will also have a basic understanding of the forms of
violence against children (i.e. physical abuse, emotional/verbal abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect). Due
to frequent use of computers and other mobile technologies (smartphones, tablets, etc.) in their
professional and personal lives, learners will be very familiar with various aspects of computer use
(working with a word processor, navigating web pages, searching internet, controlling volume of
speakers, connecting to networks, etc.) and be able to independently use a computer.

activity which requires composition of text based on a case study will take the most amount of time and
will vary by participant. Overall, the total time to completion will be anywhere from 1-2 hours.
The two pages above will be your final tasks of the tutorial and will showcase what you have learned. The
Instructions page allows one the opportunity to access both the case study and case activity via buttons. Once
accessing the Case Activity, there will be no access back to the case study or the information provided throughout the
tutorial. To complete the activity, text can be added to the page by placing a cursor at the pencil. This will allow for
text to be added to the page. After the composition is completed, the submit button will complete the activity.
