Foreword
Birds of the Clouds shows the richness of the Alto
Mayo, a cloud forest in the selva alta of northern
Peru that shelters a great diversity of wildlife and
endemisms, significantly contributing to the megadiversity of the nation. This book is an invitation to
admire this abundance, an objective that the authors
have achieved with great art and experience.
In Peruvian-German Co-operation we believe in
the rational use of the forest; we believe in the
people, who adequately trained and organised are

capable of generating benefits without depletion of the natural resources. One of these alternatives is ecotourism which works once the population discovers its potential for generating economic resources.
Tourism is a clean industry generating income starting from minimal investments and, after mining,
is the sector producing greatest income to Peru. The scope of this publication extends far beyond
the Alto Mayo, it is part of the Peruvian north-Amazon tourist circuit, that comprises from
Lambayeque to Iquitos, crossing through Chachapoyas, Rioja, Moyobamba, Tarapoto and Yurimaguas. This should be a joint endeavour by part of the public sector, civil society and
International Co-operation to offer diverse, innovative packages and thus join efforts toward
sustainable development.

Gucharo
Oilbird
Steatornis caripensis
the landscape becomes progressively less montane and the forest taller and more tropical
with increasing numbers of Amazonian species
such as Antbirds, including the spectacular
White-plumed Antbird, being found.
Much of the low flat lands of the Mayo river
basin are now dominated by agricultural land,
mainly rice paddies with coffee predominating
on the hillsides. The rice fields provide a home
to several species of water bird including various crakes and rails as well as herons and
egrets. Remnant areas of forest in this area
support some interesting lowland bird species,
though most of the larger birds and mammals
have been lost from these fragments and are
only now found in the remoter more extensive
forest areas.

El Famoso
Gallito

The Famous
Cock-of-the-Rock
The Cock-of-the-Rock Rupicola
peruviana is one of the most spectacular and well known birds of Peru. It
inhabits the lower montane forests below 2,000 m altitude. This large orange
frugivore can often be seen feeding in
fruiting trees but is most impressive
when seen at a lek. Here males gather
at traditional lek sites in the early
morning to display. They squeal loudly
and dance, bending their heads forwards and raising their wings.
The duller females visit the leks to select
a mate who after mating plays no further part in the nesting or feeding of
the young.
Lechucita Bigotona
Long-whiskered Owlet
For birdwatchers, this is one of the endemic
specialities of the Alto Mayo. The Long-whiskered
Owlet Xenoglaux loweryi was revealed to science as
recently as 1976 and since then only 5 specimens
have been collected. Standing only 12 cm, it is the
smallest owl species in the world. Its population is
estimated to be between 250 and 1,000 individuals,
and the Alto Mayo Protection Forest and the Cordillera
de Colan Reserved Zone could well be its last refuge.
Not much is known of its ecology apart from having
been heard in areas of elfin forests highly humid and
abundant in epiphytes, tree ferns and in small bamboo
forests at 1,900 to 2,350 m altitudes.

A trip with local guides in a small canoe along the blackwater streams of the forest gives a great
opportunity to see a large variety of water birds including 5 species of kingfisher, 8 species of
heron, Horned Screamer, Limpkin, Grey-necked Wood-Rail as well as other birds typical of these
forests like the Slender-billed Kite and the Silvered and Band-tailed Antbirds. These boat trips
also allow visitors to see monkeys, including Squirrel Monkeys, White-fronted Capuchins, Red
Howlers and Dusky Titis. The area also offers a very good opportunity to see the Neotropical
River Otter; this normally shy animal is quite easily seen along the quiet waterways, often being
first detected as it noisily crunches on a fish under overhanging vegetation. The higher areas can
be explored on foot from the village of Tingana where the forest fragments amongst the coffee
plantations can offer great birding with species such as Cream-coloured Woodpecker and Grey
Potoo being readily seen along with a good variety of Amazonian lowland birds including several

La Cordillera de Coln
The Cordillera de Colan
The Cordillera de Coln forms the western boundary of the Alto Mayo separating the humid forests
from the arid Maran valley. These forests which extend from 750-3,600 m altitude contains
many species in common with the Alto Mayo but also supports some bird species not found in the
Alto Mayo. The most important of these is the Marvellous Spatuletail hummingbird, which is
only found here. The forests at the northern end of the Cordillera de Coln have suffered extensive deforestation in recent decades and now only scattered woodlots remain in areas near roads
with extensive forest cover only now being found in hard to access areas. The remaining woodlots
still harbor a surprisingly diverse avifauna and can be very rewarding for the visiting birdwatcher.
Recently the Peruvian government has created a Reserved Zone in the Cordillera de Colan, which
extends over 64,114 hectares and aims protect the important habitat and endemic species found there.

the town of Pomacochas. It is near Pomacochas where the species is most frequently reported and
most easily seen. It inhabits montane forest, forest edges and open areas nearby; although the species
is perhaps most often seen in open areas, recent observations seem to suggest that it only uses open
areas close to remaining forest patches and it seems likely that it is indeed reliant on forest. It is
mainly found from 2,100 to 2,800 m altitude but has been recorded as low as 1,700 m and as high as
3,700 m. The breeding season is from October to May when the males gather at leks (communal

The species remains little known. Its population is estimated to be less than 1,000 individuals and
it is considered to probably be declining in numbers. The main threat to its continued survival is
the on-going deforestation of the region. Additionally, the males are hunted in some areas in the
mistaken belief that the heart has aphrodisiac properties; and hunting with slingshots has been
suggested to explain a skewed sex ratio, with males being rarer than females.
In order to ensure the long-term survival of this amazing bird there is a need for more accurate information
and a locally led conservation strategy. Research is
needed into the ecology of the species as well as surveys
of the Cordillera de Colan and adjacent areas.
A critical step is the development of a conservation
strategy involving local people to secure the long-term
survival of this unique hummingbird. The species has
a great potential as an ecotourism attraction but only
if it can be safeguarded in easily accessible areas
before all remaining habitat is destroyed there.

Over a hundred years ago, the thick and clouded forests of the Alto Mayo received small family
groups of the warrior nation of the Awajun, they arrived from the middle basin of the Maraon
river and its tributaries. The demographic strain on the territories of the Maraon and the need
for finding better fishing and hunting grounds appears to be what motivated their migration.
Self-denominated aents (the true people), the Awajun belong to the Jibaro ethnic group and are
considered to be one of the peoples of greatest cultural wealth throughout Amazonia.
According to their perception of creation, Etsa (the sun) created the world. In the beginning all
living beings were people, then Etsa converted some of them into animals. Thus, for instance,
birds like the toucan, the trumpeter, the curassow and the cock of the rocks, are warriors transformed by the sun.
The relationship of the Awajun with the forest and the creatures it shelters is close to magical,
abundant in myths and legends in which birds play a leading role. The story goes that in ancient
times fire was not known to them, it being the exclusive property of Iwa (in the native tongue
meaning he who eats us) until Jempe, the hummingbird, with the tip of its tail, stole the fire and

set aflame some trees in its swift flight through the forest and so they came to know of fire and firewood.
The blowpipe called um by the Awajun is their hunting tool par excellence and is designed
for hunting birds of which they use the flesh and feathers. The Awajun make their tawas (headdresses), necklaces and bracelets with the feathers of toucans and macaws
Another custom, although less frequent, is to visit the caves inhabited by the tayu or oilbird, of
which, in times long past, they used the eggs and certain smaller chicks, the latter for their
particularly high contents in fat.
Among the creatures of nature, there exist some that are denominated ajutap (beings with special
powers or capable of bestowing them) by the Awajun, the ikamawa (jaguar) and the ukukui
(eagle) amongst these.

The men are master weavers and use vegetable fibres like wild cotton, tamshi
(Heteropsis) and chambira (Astrocaryum) in
the making of their garments, bags and baskets. This skill could well explain why the
Quechua people of the Andes called them
Aguarunas; a name that derives from the
Quechua words awaj (weaver) and runa (man).
The people of this ethnic group use the forest as their storehouse. In the woods they find
their magical-religious plants such as
ayahuasca, tobacco and to; which are used
for contacting with their spiritual world;

moreover, they also acquire medicines, clothing and food like the cassava, of which they cultivate numerous varieties and which, through
fermentation, is used for preparing masato, a
drink served at their every-day activities and
offered to visitors as a sign of welcome.

Today the Awajun of the Alto Mayo are distributed in 14 communities. Ancient warriors and
expert hunters, the Awajun combine their traditional ways of hunting, fishing and forest use with
activities acquired through their contact with neighbouring settlers. The boom of coffee production in the region over the past 10 years has urged them to take up commercial agriculture, which
alongside to raising achiote and almizcle today comprise their main commercial crops. Based
on adequate agro-forestry practices, some communities produce organic coffee of Bird Friendly
certification, this in itself an excellent example of compatibility between their traditions and their
integration into the world of their new neighbours.
Traditional Awajun rely on in their warrior spirit, inspired by nature, to persevere in their struggle
to preserve their territories and cultural identity on their joining the globalised world.
In all probability, they are also longing that Jempe, the
hummingbird, may continue to spread the flame of
sustainable development throughout their territories.

Los Cafetales

Bird Friendly Coffee
Por I By: Rob Williams
The Alto Mayo region is famous for its coffee and now wise growing practices are conserving the
forest for birds and other wildlife whilst also creating a fabulous certified coffee. This Bird
Friendly certification was established by the Smithsonian Institution and is locally implemented
by the PRONATUR coffee company with support from GTZ (the German Cooperation Agency).
Shade grown coffee is grown under a canopy of native tree species that provide a substitute for
natural forest and still allow many of the species to survive or at least move through the plantation, in contrast to the open fields of sun grown coffee that are largely devoid of wildlife. Shade
grown coffee is also considered by many to be superior in quality to sun grown. Shade grown
coffee is winning increasing market share in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada due
to its superior quality and because the plantations provide other environmental services, such as

In addition to growing coffee under shade

tations for wildlife. Shade grown coffee plantations are especially important for many species of
migratory songbird that breed in the US and Canada and migrate south to the tropical forests of
Central and South America. These migratory species, known as neotropical migrants, include almost
all the North American wood warblers, many thrushes, flycatchers and tanagers. The Alto Mayo
area is a seasonal home to several of these species including the globally threatened Cerulean Warbler. The most regularly seen neotropical migrants in the area are probably the Swainsons Thrush,
Blackpoll Warbler and Broad-wing Hawk, all of which are common between October and March.
Visitors to the region can support this initiative by only buying shade grown coffee and also by
visiting a plantation to see these practices and the wildlife that benefits.

The forests of the Alto Mayo and Cordillera Colan are not only important for
their birds and orchids, they also support a great many other species of fauna
and flora. Amongst these the very rare and threatened Yellow-tailed Woolly
Monkey is particularly important. Only described for the first time in 1974 this
monkey is restricted to the montane forest of the extreme north-east Andes of
Peru in San Martin and Amazonas departments.
The species is considered endangered due to its small range and is threatened
by habitat destruction and hunting in the more accessible areas. It is very hard
to find in most of its range as it is now confined to remoter regions but the
forests above Afluente and around Abra Patricia probably offer the best chance.

Orqudeas:
Fascinante Belleza
Orchids: A Fascinating Beauty
Las orqudeas son flores bellas y
fascinantes, que se encuentran en la
espesura del bosque, entre musgos,
lquenes, helechos, arceas y bromelias.
insectos (abejas, moscas, mariposas
diurnas y nocturnas) y aves como los
colibres.

The Alto Mayo is a place privileged for observing orchids in their natural setting, with localities within easy access like the Morro de
Calzada (Calzada Bluff), the Communal Protected Areas, the Alto Mayo Forest Reserve
(with the communities of Aguas Claras,
Venceremos, Progreso, etc.) and tributary
streams of the Mayo river, which guarantee the
visualisation of a great diversity of species during a short excursion. In Moyobamba and its
surrounding areas there are a few specialised
nurseries where dedicated floriculturists cultivate hundreds of orchid species to the delight
of visitors, a veritable feast of shapes, colours,
dimensions, textures and fragrances. Efflorescence varies depending on the species, some
of them blossoming all year round, however,
we recommend going between the months of
June and January, where, additional to admiring the delicate beauty of these flowers, you will
also be able to enjoy of a very pleasant climate.

Birding in the Alto Mayo and Cordillera de Colan
Por I By: Thomas Valqui

Colan Cordillera
The area of La Florida or Pomacochas lies in the
southernmost part of the Colan Cordillera. The
Marvellous Spatuletail (Loddigesia mirabilis) is
perhaps the one of greatest renown and most sought
for among birdwatchers who visit this zone. Nonetheless, besides this living jewel, the site offers a
series of attractive birds and a total of at least
150 species.
Site of the Hummingbird: Only 30 minutes from
Pedro Ruiz, level to km 319, we can stop and observe the flowering shrubs by the side of the road.
If we are lucky, well be able to enjoy of this beautiful hummingbird from a short distance. Further
