Urban Planning

Welcome

Welcome
Welcome to Allplan 2015! This step-by-step guide is
designed for urban planners.
To familiarize yourself with all the important tools
provided by Allplan 2015, you will first create a zoning
plan followed by the section of a master plan. Finally,
you will learn how to print layouts.
You will find that within a short time you will be in a
position to use Allplan 2015 effectively in your daily
work even though detailed descriptions of all tools and
options are beyond the scope of this step-by-step guide.
The following chapter shows how to work through this
guide. In addition, you will find an introduction to the
chapters and the exercises you can find in this book.

Allplan 2015 and Urban Planning

Allplan 2015

Allplan 2015 and Urban Planning

Lines, circles and other geometric elements convey the spatial vision
and dimension of open space in both urban planning and object
planning. Too often, however, this is evident to experts only. In
principle, computer-aided work is also plan-oriented: what you see
on screen and in the printout is two-dimensional. However, a threedimensional, spatial data model is behind these graphics. The third
dimension opens up new ways of visualizing data: the program
automatically generates perspective views, sections and elevations,
getting visions across.
This is the way Allplan 2015 supports urban planners in their
creative work. The program is tailored to your needs. If you have
experience with other CAD programs, you will immediately notice
that Allplan 2015 is different. It reflects the natural logic of urban
planners, helping them to accomplish their tasks quickly and easily.
Allplan 2015 has a modular structure. This means that all options are
available to you at any time. In the Tools palette, for example, a
single click takes you from 3D architecture to 2D design or
presentation. You do not require any add-ons. All modules access
the same database. So it is not necessary to convert or set up the
data for use with other modules.
After you have selected a module, such as Urban Planning, the
module-specific tools as well as the general tools are always at hand.
Icons have uniform colors and symbols in all modules, making it
easy for you to recognize them. So you can work intuitively. In
addition, you can assemble your own toolbars and customize them
for your needs.
When it comes to designing, Allplan 2015 does not leave you alone:
the dialog line below the workspace indicates the type of input
expected by the program. You can find detailed descriptions of all
tools and modules in the help.
Various methods for editing and modifying data make your work
easy and efficient. You can change dimensions, properties and
representations of paths, plants, components and all other design
entities quickly and easily at any time. Using special filters, you have
no problem selecting the elements you want to modify in a complex
model. Additional tools for precision drafting and intelligent options
for snapping to existing points make sure your design is precise.

Urban Planning

Welcome

Using the tools for controlling the on-screen display, you can zoom
in to get a close-up view of any section of your design. Switching
between different perspective views only takes one click. Allplan's
viewports open up interesting options. The viewports display the
design in different views, such as plan, perspective and elevation
view. Changes you make in one viewport are immediately reflected
in all the others.
If you have already drawn an element (line, circle, column and so
on), Allplan makes your work even easier:
In order to create more elements of the same type, just doubleclick the existing element with the right mouse button. The
program automatically switches to the appropriate module and
selects the tool that was used to create the element. In addition,
Allplan copies all the properties of the element clicked. So you do
not have to go through the time-consuming process of looking
for the right icon and defining the properties.
If you want to edit an element, click it with the right mouse
button. The program opens the shortcut menu where you can
select the tool you need.
If you want to change the properties of an element, double-click
it with the left mouse button. The program opens the Properties
dialog box of the element. Selecting Properties on the shortcut
menu of the element has the same effect.
When you select an element, you can immediately move, rotate,
mirror and copy it using direct object modification. In addition,
you can modify the element geometry and change other objectspecific properties.
The presentation tools provided by Allplan 2015 help you achieve as
realistic an image as possible. In detail, you can simulate lighting
effects and surfaces, set various views and create rendered images.
Last but not least, you can even walk through a virtual urban
quarter.
Data management also reflects the manner in which urban planners
work. Looking for files is a thing of the past. Allplan 2015 is a
project-oriented program. In other words, a project exists for each
construction project. Within the project, you draw the individual
components on drawing files. To apply a structure to these drawing
files, you use the building structure. You create the individual
components, such as plots, buildings, plants and labels, in separate
drawing files. As you go along, you select the drawing files you

About This Guide

Allplan 2015

currently need. When it comes to printing, you can define the

contents of the printout simply by placing the drawing files on a
page referred to as the layout.
However, Allplan 2015 can do more than printing layouts and
creating realistic images of future gardens or urban quarters. The
intelligent, three-dimensional data model provides all the
information you need for analyses. Area calculations, land-use
templates and reports of special area codes are generated
automatically with a single mouse click.
This step-by-step guide teaches you the principles of working with
Allplan 2015. In addition, you will familiarize yourself with the most
important tools provided by Allplan 2015. Based on this knowledge,
you can work effectively and harness the advantages of the myriad
options Allplan provides. However, the format of this guide puts a
limit on the number of tools and options we can present.

About This Guide

This step-by-step guide consists of five units, each of which focuses
on a specific topic and includes exercises on this topic. You should
work through the exercises in the sequence in which they are
presented. This provides you with a detailed understanding of the
project structure and you learn how to create a project step by step.
The resulting training project is used throughout this guide. At the
end you can find two digressions on importing DXF data and
working with the Scan module.

Unit 1: Project
Organization - Urban
Planning
Project structure, i.e. the way in which you organize your
data, is an essential part of any building design project.
An efficient and logical structure will allow you to locate
the data you need without having to perform tedious
searches. It is worth spending time carefully planning a
projects structure before even drawing the first line.
Consider the time and effort spent doing this as a good
investment - after all, in the long term, it will save you
time and money.
Using Allplan 2015s flexible approach, you can create
your own office-specific structures which, in turn, can be
altered to suit the needs of special projects. In this unit
you will create a project for urban planning and define
the project structure.

Allplan 2015

Project - Drawing File - Layer - Fileset Layout

A project is an organizational unit. A new project is created for each
construction project. Technically, a project is a folder;
metaphorically speaking, it is a drawer containing the drawing files.
An unnamed "private project" for practice and testing is available to
each user.
The actual design and data creation process happens in drawing files.
These are the equivalent of the transparencies used in conventional
building design. In IT terms, a drawing file is a conventional file
stored on your hard disk. Drawing files can be used to give projects a
structure. The individual components - boundaries, buildings, roads
and paths, green areas and so on - are drawn on separate drawing
files which are then superimposed like transparencies. You can
display and edit up to 128 drawing files at once. A project can
contain up to 9999 drawing files.
Layers provide an additional means of applying a structure - within
drawing files. Layers can be set so that they are not visible to the
user. Layer administration controls access rights and the assignment
of print sets.
Organizing data using layers has significant advantages. For
example, you need fewer drawing files. However, when it comes to
reinforcement tasks, you should opt for the drawing file structure so
that you can select the individual reinforcement layers separately,
which is not possible with layers.
Filesets are an important organizational unit within projects. A
fileset can consist of up to 128 drawing files. You can assign any
drawing file to a fileset at any time. Up to 1,000 filesets can be
created per project. Advantages:
Although a drawing file only exists once, it can be assigned to
several filesets at the same time (for example, grid, axis system).
When you switch to a different fileset while working, all
associated drawing files are immediately available to you.
A fileset can be placed in a layout to be printed with a single
command.

Urban Planning

Unit 1: Project Organization - Urban Planning

15

A layout is the unit you send to the printer. As opposed to design

using a conventional drafting board, the scope of the layout does not
have to be defined in advance. Generally, you leave the layout
(which involves arranging and laying out drawing files and/or
filesets) until youre finished with the design. Each project can
contain up to 9,999 layouts.

Building Structure and Urban Planning

Allplan 2015

Building Structure and Urban Planning

In Allplan, you can use the building structure to plan construction
projects.
The building structure provides a customizable, flexible way of
structuring, organizing and using documents (=drawing files) in
Allplan (think of the Building Information Model). You can use the
building structure to logically structure a building using several
hierarchical levels.
Analyses, such as sections, views and reports, can be derived directly
from the building structure.
Allplan comes with several predefined building structures.
The plane model is directly associated with the building structure.
The building structure consists of a number of hierarchically
structured levels; drawing files are assigned to the individual levels.
You can then assign a pair of default reference planes to each
structural level. All the drawing files belonging to a structural level
can use the default planes assigned to this structural level.
Consequently, the associated drawing files update automatically to
reflect any changes you make to the height settings of a structural
level.
Example of a building structure (taken from the Detached House
example that comes with Allplan)

Urban Planning

Unit 1: Project Organization - Urban Planning

Although building design benefits the most from the building

structure, you can also use it for urban planning, for example, to
harness the advantages provided by reports.
Note: This step-by-step guide works with the building structure.

The Urban Planning Project

Creating the project
You can manage files quickly and easily in Allplan 2015. Projects
form the basis. You create a new project for each construction
project.

To create a project
1 Open the File menu and click

New Project, Open Project....

2 In the New Project, Open Project dialog box, click

Project.

New

3 In the New Project - Specify Project Name dialog box, type in

Urban Planning for the project name and click Next.

4 In the next dialog box, check that all paths are set to Project. If
they aren't, set them accordingly. Then click Next to confirm.

Urban Planning

Unit 1: Project Organization - Urban Planning

19

Note: In this guide, you work with the project standard. The
project standard, which is a copy of the office standard, only
applies to the current project. The advantage is that any changes
in the definitions of pens or line types do not affect the office
standard; instead, they affect your project only. Consequently,
you can customize all the settings for your needs without
changing the office standard.

5 A predefined project structure is not necessary; you will create

your own structure.
Click Finish or Next.
Note: When you work with Workgroup Manager on a network,
the Finish button is not displayed until you reach the dialog box
for specifying the owner and authorized users.
You are back in Allplan 2015. The Urban Planning project and
drawing file 1 are open.

Creating the building structure

For the exercises in the Urban Planning project, you will create your
own, simple building structure.

To create a building structure

The Urban Planning project is open.
1 Click

Open on a Project-Specific Basis (Default toolbar).

As your project does not have a building structure, you can see
the following dialog box.

groups. This way, you can configure the program for your needs. The
section that follows shows how to set some important defaults. First
you will change the unit of length.
This setting saves you the effort of converting the units - all you
need to do is select the unit you want to use. Set the unit m (meter)
for the first exercise.
Allplan 2015 provides different units of length and angle.

To set the unit of length

This training project contains a building structure without a plane

model (plane models are used for multi-story buildings). As soon as
you open an empty drawing file for the first time, the height of the
default reference planes is taken from the defaults specified for
Planes in the options.
Now you define the height of the default reference planes so that
components associated with the planes are consistent with the
buildings.

Color/pen association
Color/pen association is controlled by the Color stands for pen
option in Show/Hide (Default toolbar). Color stands for pen means
that the color used to display an element on screen is associated with
(and thus dependent on) its pen thickness. Elements drawn with a
certain pen (or pen thickness) are always presented on-screen with
the same color, regardless of the colors assigned to the individual
elements. You can specify which color represents which pen in the
Defaults (Tools menu).
As you do not need the Color stands for pen option to work through
this step-by-step guide, you can switch it off.

To switch off the "Color stands for pen" option

Using Non-Native Data

33

Using Non-Native Data

Urban planners usually receive the basic drawings and
plans in the form of data - be it DXF files, DWG files,
point files from the surveyor, scanned drawings or data
of planning partners working with Allplan.
Allplan 2015 offers you a wide range of options for
importing data.
This step-by-step guide shows how to import data and
use it as the basis for urban planning. You will learn
about four different options:
Importing a TIFF file using the Bitmap Area tool
Importing a drawing file with resources
Importing a DXF file
Importing a scanned file using the tools in the Scan
module
You will use the first two options in the exercises that
follow. The digressions in the chapters on the DXF
import and Scan module consider the two other options.

34

Importing Allplan 2015 Data

Allplan 2015

Importing Allplan 2015 Data

Due to varying operating systems and their associated data formats,
the different types of data, which do not match by nature, cannot be
exchanged directly. So you need to adjust them for use with the
other CAD system. This is done by means of interfaces. If all
planning partners work with Allplan, the effort involved in
exchanging data can be reduced to a minimum.
Nevertheless, you should ask your planning partners to provide you
with the following information:
Operating system
Version used
Projects and/or drawing files backed up
Backup method used
Compression program used

Compressed data
A compression program is often used to transfer large files. The data
is compressed by this program and needs to be decompressed again
before or during the import.
Compressed files are given an extension when they are saved.

Training data
The SbS Urban Planning.zip file includes the following
compressed data:
d.diigraus.9706.bgr.dxf DXF file
Geo-referenced orthophoto as a TIFF file
TFW file required for the orthophoto
Drawing file data

Unit 2: Urban Planning

Before you start with the first exercise, which involves
creating a zoning plan, this section presents some general
notes on the Urban Planning module.
The Urban Planning module provides urban planners
with everything they need to get the job done - ranging
from integrated, intelligent drawing symbol regulations
for creating zoning plans to buildings for master plans to
label styles and reports for analyses.

38

Objectives

Allplan 2015

Objectives
In this chapter you will create the zoning plan of a small town and
the master plan including the open space planning of a new growth
area.

Work your way through the exercises step by step. You will learn
about the basic tools in the Urban Planning module - ranging from
integrated, intelligent drawing symbol regulations to buildings to
label styles and reports.

40

Zoning Plan

Allplan 2015

Zoning Plan
In this exercise you will create a zoning plan based on a georeferenced orthophoto of the small town. The first step involves
importing this photo to Allplan 2015. In the Urban Planning
module, the Drawing Symbol Regulations tool helps you with the
graphical appearance of layouts and the Legend tool makes it easy
to create correct legends in no time at all.

Step 1 - importing the geo-referenced orthophoto

Tip: The coordinates required
for georeferencing do not
necessarily have to be in TFW
files. They can also be
included as metadata in the
GeoTIFF file. In either case the
geometric information is
analyzed when the data are
imported into Allplan using
Bitmap Area.

You will create the zoning plan based on the geo-referenced

orthophoto, which is provided as a TIFF file with an associated TFW
file. The latter contains additional geodetic information on the
position and size of the image. You have already copied these two
files to a folder on your computer. Next you will use the Bitmap
Area tool to import the TIFF file into Allplan When you select a
bitmap with geodetic data using the Bitmap Area tool, you can use
the scale and drop-in point of this bitmap. In this case, Allplan will
not prompt you to specify the drop-in point.
Note: The geodetic data in the TFW file are not based on real data.
This file, which was created for the purpose of this exercise, contains
notional data.

To add the TIFF file to Allplan

Allplan is open and drawing file 10 is current.
1 On the Insert menu, click

Bitmap Area.

5 Acknowledge the following prompt by clicking Yes.

41

42

Zoning Plan

Allplan 2015

6 The TIFF file is automatically saved in the design folder of the

project.
In addition, the program asks whether you want to save the file
in the design folder of the office standard. This is not necessary.
Click No.

7 In the border of the viewport, click

Zoom All or press F5.

8 Use the
Measure Length tool (Default toolbar) to measure a
distance whose length you know in the bitmap area and compare
it with the actual length. In this example, you can use the scale
displayed in the bottom right corner of the bitmap area.
9 Check the coordinates by selecting the
Measure Coordinates
tool (Default toolbar) and then clicking the top left corner of the
bitmap area.
Note: The coordinates in this file are not based on real
coordinates. This file, which was created for the purpose of this
exercise, contains notional data.
Note: In Germany, coordinates are defined as Gauss-Krger
coordinates or UTM coordinates. Therefore, the bitmap area is often
far from the coordinate origin.
So you can proceed in two ways:

Urban Planning

Unit 2: Urban Planning

43

Case A: if you want to continue to work with this data, you are
advised to select the Optimize working with large coordinates
option. The program internally optimizes the coordinates of the
elements and restores the original values each time you have done
something, for example, saved the file.
Options (Default toolbar). Select the Optimize working
Open the
with large coordinates option in the General area on the Desktop
environment page.
For more information see the chapter entitled "A note on DXF
import (on page 141)" or consult the Allplan help and read the
chapter entitled "Importing files with large coordinates".

Case B: you create an XRef and place it as close to the origin as

possible, which reduces the coordinates.
In this example, you will use the second solution (case B).

44

Zoning Plan

Allplan 2015

Step 2 - XRef
You can place a document as an XRef in a document as often as you
need. This way, you do not have to enter the same elements again
and again, such as the furniture of hotel rooms. All you need to do is
create the elements once in a document. Then you can insert this
document as an XRef as often as you want. Changes to the original
data only need to be done once - all associated XRefs will update
dynamically. You can insert XRefs at any scale and angle. But you
cannot insert empty documents as XRefs.
You can place XRefs as normal XRefs or as advanced XRefs.
Detailed information is provided in the Allplan help. Refer to the
chapter "Comparison between normal and advanced XRefs".
The size of the XRef matches that of the elements in the document. If
the size changes later, you can update the XRef using Update All
XRefs on the shortcut menu. If you want, you can clip an XRef later.
You cannot do this while placing it.
Show/Hide (View menu), you can specify whether XRefs
Using
and XRef borders are displayed or not. Regardless of this setting,
Area detection always takes into account the XRef border. To
avoid this, you can place the XRef on a separate layer and hide this
layer. Elements in advanced XRefs are always taken into account.

To place an XRef in a drawing file

Allplan is open and drawing file 10 is current.
1 The data you imported to drawing file 10 in the last step are
required for the zoning plan. Move the bitmap area to the
background. Open the shortcut menu of the bitmap area by
clicking it with the right mouse button.

Using drawing symbol regulations

Before you start creating the zoning plan, this section presents some
general notes on the Drawing Symbol Regulations tool.
Drawing Symbol Regulations tool (Tools palette
You can use the
- Terrain family - Urban Planning module - Create area) to draw
areas according to land-use type, building lines and building
restriction lines, green areas and traffic areas and so on. Please note
that this tool is based on German regulations. It is a good idea to use
a separate drawing file for the planning.
You can find the symbols of the drawing symbol regulations in the
symbol catalog of the same name. The catalog provides different
symbols for a representation in black and white or in color.
Note: To display the zoning plan in color, switch off the Color
Show/Hide (View menu).

In CAD terms, there are four different types of drawing symbols,
which differ in their parameters and in the way they are entered and
labeled (except for slope).
Tip: Changes pose no
problem: you can modify the
symbols at any time
(see section "A note on
international land-use
planning).

Drawing symbol areas

have general parameters (custom text, predefined attributes,
factor, height) and specific parameters (for analyses using reports
and labeling using templates). You can enter the outline of the
area as a closed polyline or use the automatic area detection
feature.
Drawing symbol lines
have the same general parameters as areas. You can enter the
geometry as a polyline or by clicking an element or a composite
element (e.g., a spline acting as a road location line).
Drawing symbol objects
can have predefined attributes. You can resize and rotate drawing
symbol objects when you place them in the drawing file.
Drawing symbol slopes
do not have parameters and attributes. You can enter slopes in
the same way as in the Advanced Draft module (Sonstige
Planzeichen (other drawing symbols), Aufschttung (fill) and
Abgrabung (cut)).

A note on international land-use planning

International urban planning is a breeze with Allplan 2015. You can
use up to ten different drawing symbol regulations. When creating a
New Project,
project or defining project settings (File menu Open Project...), you specify which drawing symbol regulations you
want to use:

You can create your own drawing symbol regulations that are
tailored to the regulations in your country. The Drawing symbol
regulations catalog provided by Nemetschek cannot be changed.
Therefore, it is in the ETC folder (default path).
To modify the drawing symbol regulations delivered with the
program and to adapt them to local conditions, you can copy the
default catalog and select this copy for a project. You can do this
when you define settings for the project.
The section that follows briefly describes how to copy the default
catalog and assign this copy to a project.
Note: As the exercises in this training project are based on the
default drawing symbol regulations, you do not need to work
through the following description.

62

Zoning Plan

Allplan 2015

To copy a drawing symbol catalog and select it for a

project
1 On the File menu, click
New Project, Open Project..., open the
shortcut menu of the relevant project and click Properties....
2 In the Project Settings dialog box, click the Drawing symbol
regulations button in the Path settings area.
3 In the Drawing symbol regulations dialog box, right-click

4 Right-click the Office folder and select Insert on the shortcut

menu.

This creates a copy of the default drawing symbol regulations in

the Office folder. Its name is Planzv1. You can copy and insert
more drawing symbol regulations in this way. The names are
automatically incremented by 1.

64

Zoning Plan

Allplan 2015

5 Select the drawing symbol regulations you want to assign to the

current project and click OK.
Now you can open the project and customize the drawing symbol
regulations in the office standard.
Once you have customized drawing symbol regulations, you can
assign them directly to a project. You do not need to copy them
again.
If you want to create new regulations based on customized
regulations in the office path, you can copy the required
regulations directly in the office path. Use the same approach.

Now you can change the drawing symbol catalog using the
Create Drawing Symbol tool, for example. You can find more
information in the help for Allplan 2015. Refer to the chapter
"Modifying, deleting symbols in the drawing symbol catalog".

Step 5 - modifying the zoning plan

Using Allplan 2015 you can change planning data quickly and
easily: all parameters you defined can be modified at any time.
Drawing symbol objects cannot be modified. You need to delete
them and place new objects.
Note: Only drawing symbols of the same type (areas or lines) can be
modified together. To select drawing symbols, you can use the
Filter by Urban Planning, Landscaping Object tool on the Filter

add it to the northwestern corner of the building.

Step 7 - setbacks
Using the Urban Planning module, you can quickly and easily check
whether the buildings you entered comply with the setback
requirements. The depth of the setbacks is calculated based on the
building height and a number of factors you need to specify in
accordance with the applicable building codes and regulations. The
program calculates the building height, that is the wall height and
the gable height, from the points of the roof edge. Therefore, you
need to click these points in isometric view.

11

12 Create the other setbacks by repeating the steps above.

Would you like to get a little bit of practice? Then check whether all
the buildings you entered comply with the setback requirements and,
if necessary, move the buildings.
Setbacks
Setbacks are always located in the same drawing file as the building
itself, and they are always associated with the building. In other
words, moving the building also moves the setbacks.
If you do not want to include the setbacks in the printout, you can
delete them before you assemble the layout. If you work with layers,

100

Master Plan with Open Space Planning

Allplan 2015

you can place the setbacks on a separate layer and hide this layer
when it comes to printing.
When you change the height of a building, the setbacks will not
adapt automatically to the new height. In this case, you need to
delete the setbacks and create them for the modified building again.

Step 8 - open space planning

Assembling and Printing

Layouts
What is the use of a CAD program if you cannot bring
the data to paper? Allplan 2015 makes printing a breeze!
Before you start, you need to set up the printer. Using
Allplan 2015 you can quickly and easily print the
contents of the screen at any stage in the design process.
To bring the final drawing to paper, all the filesets and
drawing files are arranged in a layout, which is then sent
to the printer.
As opposed to design using a conventional drafting
board, the scope and size of the layout do not have to be
defined in advance. Generally, you leave the layout
(which involves arranging and laying out drawing files
and/or filesets) until youre finished with the design. This
is also the stage where you define the paper size, scale,
border, angle and so on. Each project can contain up to
9,999 layouts.
Using the Layout Window tool, you can place sections
from different drawing files in the layout. You can even
convert layout sections to separate layouts using the
tools in the Crop Layout module.

A Note on DXF Import

The training data provided with this step-by-step guide
include a site plan in DXF format.
This chapter teaches you all you need to know about
importing files with large coordinates. Following this,
you will import the DXF file into Allplan.

142

Notes on Importing Files with Large Coordinates

Allplan 2015

Notes on Importing Files with Large

Coordinates
DXF and DWG files can contain elements with very large
coordinates; this is especially true in the case of files with country
coordinates. When you check the log file after having imported a file
with large coordinates, you will find the following warning:
Coordinates exceed 5,000 m. Large coordinates can cause problems
when you edit the imported data in Allplan.
There are different ways of using this data without any problems:
During import you can use the Adjust center of gravity to:
Settings, General Settings tab, to control how
options in the
data with large coordinates is to be handled:
- When you select the Off option, the data stays the same.
- Select the Adjust center of gravity to: Offset option. This
automatically sets an offset in the Project Settings: the
origin of the file (= center of the min-max-box) is set to the
origin of the coordinate system. You cannot use this option
when you have already specified an offset in the Project
Settings.
Note: Here, offset means that the data is moved during
import; the values by which the data is moved are
automatically written to the project. This offset applies to the
entire project. Setting an offset changes the coordinates of
the existing drawing files in this project.
- Select the Adjust center of gravity to: Origin option. This
moves the center of the data to the origin of the Allplan
coordinate system.
During import you can specify an Additional offset in the
Settings. This offset is used in addition to the offset set in the
Project Settings. Pay attention to the direction of conversion
when you set an offset:
- Negative values for import
- Positive values for export

Urban Planning

A Note on DXF Import

143

Import the data and move it towards the origin using the
Move tool in Allplan.
Specify offset coordinates in the Project Settings. The offset set is
automatically taken into account when you export and import
data.
Important: Using an offset is usually the better solution:
Point coordinates are measured correctly, and they are not
changed. This is particularly important when you need to export
the data again (coordinates in site plans are legally binding).
The offset set is automatically taken into account when you
export and import data.
Whenever you move data, you change the coordinates
themselves. So you are advised to use this option only if you
require the data for internal use and you do not need to export
the data again (coordinates in site plans are legally binding).
If a project with large coordinates is at an advanced stage, Allplan
provides another solution that helps you improve the representation.
Select the Optimize working with large coordinates option in
Options, Desktop environment. The program internally
the
optimizes the coordinates of the elements and restores the
original values each time you have done something, for example,
saved the file.

A Note on the Scan

Module
The training data provided with this step-by-step guide
include a scanned cadastral map, which you will import
into Allplan. This chapter teaches you everything about
working with scanned images and the tools in the Scan
module.

150

Scanned images

Allplan 2015

Scanned images
You can scan drawings created on a drawing board or have them
scanned. Using the Scan module, you can then link these drawings
with drawing files and edit them.

Possible applications
The Scan module offers numerous options for editing scanned
drawings. In addition to tools for moving, copying, rotating,
mirroring, scaling and deleting the data, you can also define specific
sections as scan elements that can then be edited individually.
Scanned drawings can be linked with designs ("placed in the
background" = hybrid data processing). You can also display and
print multiple scanned drawings at the same time. As a result, the
possible applications for this module are manifold:
Plans of existing buildings can be scanned and placed in the
background. These then serve as the basis for building alteration
drawings and extension plans with the 2D/3D tools.
Cadastral drawings, site plans or zoning plans are used in urban
development and landscaping. For example, a scanned zoning
plan can be placed in the background while working on the
development of a new residential housing area.
Drawings are scanned and archived.
Objects like trees, furniture, people and other details in scanned
drawings or catalogs can be defined as bitmaps. Bitmaps can be
placed in drawing files as needed.
Freehand drawings and sketches can be used to graphically
enhance plans - for competition entries, for example.

A Note on the Scan Module

Scanned images and drawing files

Scanned image organization
Scanned images are not part of drawing files. They are merely linked
with drawing files. The drawing file is given a reference with
information on the location of the scanned image and the manner in
which it is linked. The scanned image still exists as a file. When you
link a scanned image with a drawing file, it is always displayed
together with the drawing file. The same is true for printing.
Only one scanned image can be linked per drawing file; however, the
same scanned image can be linked with several drawing files.
Several drawing files can be displayed and printed, each with a
different scanned image.
A drawing file with a scanned image must not be opened in edit
mode when you work in the Scan module. It must either be the
current file or open in reference mode.
The reference to a drawing file can be cleared at any time using
Clear Link (Change area) The scanned image still exists, even
though it is then no longer linked with the drawing file in question.
References from other drawing files to the image are not affected.
Delete Image. As opposed to the
Clear
Be careful when using
Link tool, this will delete the actual file. References from other
drawing files to the image will thus be ineffective.

152

Scanned images

Allplan 2015

Scanning layouts
There are two ways to create a scan file:
Scan with your own scanner.
Have it done by a professional service provider: you are given the
scanned images possibly as a file attachment via the Internet or
on a storage medium.
Whichever approach you take, you must first define:
The format of the scan file
Allplan 2015 supports the RLC format (Run Length Code) as well
as all common formats, such as TIFF and BMP. The bitmap files
are converted to RLC by the Scan module. We recommend the
TIFF format as it can be converted very quickly.
The resolution
The resolution is specified in dpi (dots per inch). The higher the
resolution, the greater the volume of data. In addition, the
resolution at which the scanned image can be printed after
editing is frequently limited to 300 or 600 dpi. This is why a
resolution of 600 dpi is generally sufficient when scanning.
Grayscale
If you create a BMP or TIFF file when you scan, then this should
be set to 8 or 16. You can hide the light grayscale later by
converting the file to RLC.
Note: Detailed information
about TIFF support is provided
in the Allplan help.

Important! Scanned images cannot improve on the original.

Scanners use contrast to scan. Consequently, foldmarks and the like
are also scanned. If the original paper has "waves" (due to exposure
to damp, for example), the scanned image may well be distorted. The
result of the scan operation can be controlled with the scanning
software. Allplan 2015 includes tools for adapting the scanned image
to the scale (see training project). It is also possible to fix distortions
and make cosmetic enhancements".

Urban Planning

A Note on the Scan Module

153

Working with the Scan module

The process of scanning a paper plan or drawing, using the scan as
the basis for design work or for scan elements involves the following
steps:
Scan the plan, drawing or photo.
Import the scan file in the current project.
Link the scan with the drawing file, make sure that resolution and
scale are correct. The drawing file references the scan.
Rotate, resize or delete the scan, if necessary.
Important: This modifies the scan itself.
Note: Scans are bitmaps. They are not vector drawings. As scanned
images are comprised of pixels, lines, points and other entities are
not recognized as such.

Working with scanned images

The image is inserted i.e., the drawing file has a reference to the
image. Here are the next steps:
You now need to check whether the image is to scale. Measure a
distance whose length you know in the image and compare it
with the actual length. The result is the zoom factor, which you
can use to adjust the image. This will scale the image in the x
Link with Scanned
and y direction at the same time. Select
Image (Create area) again to specify the zoom factor.
When you link a new image, the system will position it so that it
is centered on the global point. In most cases, therefore, the
image needs to be moved as the global point is generally on
significant points on a building or terrain and hardly ever in the
Reposition Image (Change area).
center. Select
Note: The zoom factor and the
Reposition Image tool only
control how the scan file is displayed. They do not actually
modify the scan file, not even in the other drawing files where
the scan file has been inserted.

154

Scanned images

Allplan 2015

When an area of a scanned image has minor distortions in the x

and y directions, you can use the 3-point correction feature. This
allows you to fit the plan of a building precisely into the design
3-Point Correct tool
of the building outline. Select the
(Change area).
3-Point Correct tool will modify the image itself.
Note: The
The changes are visible in all the drawing files where the image
has been inserted.
Before you make any changes, copy the image using
Copy
Image (Create area) so that you have a backup copy of the
original!
Important! Scanned images are comprised of pixel data.
Consequently, not all the tools Allplan 2015 provides for drafting
and designing are available to you. You are thus advised to use the
tools in the Draft module to trace the part of the scanned image that
is relevant to your planning before you continue.

Importing scanned drawings

The training data includes the fnp.tif file, a scanned cadastral
map. A resolution of 300 dpi was used for scanning.
When you import the file, the TIFF format is converted to RLC
format. The RLC format is a compressed pixel format operating in
black and white mode.
Scanned images are stored as scan files (RLC format) in the
project. If you want to use a scanned image in multiple projects, it
needs to be imported into each one separately.
This step requires the FNP.tif file you imported as a bitmap area
at the beginning of this guide.

To import a scan file into a project

The Urban Planning project is open.
