Philosophy of

Teaching (Highlights)
Amanda Coomer

Purpose of Special Education

Necessary for all students that are not academically

successful and the meet the criteria for special
education services.

Free and appropriate

Least Restrictive Environment

Students should be educated in the environment

where they can be the most academically successful.

My role is provide instruction, modifications and

accommodations to help students meet these goals.

Beliefs about How Children

Learn
Gardeners theory of Multiple Intelligences:

Children all learn differently. Each student has

their own skills and talents that I should help
bring it out in each student.
Piagets theory of Constructivism: Students learn

best when able to construct their own knowledge.

This can be done by a teacher that activates prior
knowledge and clears up any misconceptions.
Vygotskys Zone of Proximal Development:

Children need lessons that deal in real world

context and students need scaffolding by the
teacher to reach their highest potential.

Managing Challenging
Behavior
Redl & Wattenberg: The teacher is a role model,

judge, referee and surrogate parent of the

classroom.
Use of low key techniques to modify behavior

(eye contact, staying calm, humor, prompting or

ignoring behavior).
Deescalating dangerous behavior and following

up with student. Physical restraint as a last resort.

Clear classroom procedures and expectations.

Managing Classroom Behavior

Duikers Theory of the Four Mistaken Goals:

Teacher should figure out the cause of student

behavior and find ways to meet those goals in a
positive way.
Choices in work and positive praise.
Seek improvement, not perfection.
Talk to student about behavior goals/Self

monitoring
Teacher should keep the class flowing and provide

appropriate transitions.

Classroom Management Style

Mix of moderate to high control
However, I do believe in certain lessons or

situations that the reins can be loosed as long

as the appropriate rules and procedures are put in
place and the students can follow them.
Students should know what is expected of them,

and there should be a logical consequence for

their action.

Ethical Obligations
Set high and realistic goals for my students
Inform instruction based on data and researched

methods.
Communication with students, parents, related

services and staff (All those who have can have a

positive impact on student)
Care for the physical and psychological needs of

students by creating a safe environment for

students.
