SWIM LESSON SKILLS BY LEVEL

These lists do not include all the skills covered in each level; it contains
those skills that may help parents determine the level at which their
child should register. Look at each level and determine whether your
child can consistently perform all the skills within that level. If so, check
the next level, and keep moving through until you reach one for which
your child cannot consistently perform all the skills. That probably is
the right level for your child. It is better to underestimate the childs
abilities than to overestimate the childs abilities. It is easier to move
a child to a higher level than to move him or her down. If you are
still not sure of your childs level after looking at this list, contact the
Aquatic Department to set up an assessment test for your child prior
to registering for a class.

PARENT & CHILD

The primary objective is to get both the parent and child comfortable
in the water. The child will become aware of the differences between
moving through water and on dry land, while the parent will become
aware of how to teach his or her child to be safe in and around the
water. Classes are designed to allow the child to have fun in the water
while the parent guides him or her to learn aquatic skills. The child will
be exposed to games that use basic movements in the water, such as
kicking, arm strokes, and breath control. Activities are based on the
developmental abilities of each child.
Water acclimation: Has a happy expression in the water, wets face
and arms and imitates parents by putting face in the water
Water entry/exit: Enters the poolfrom a sitting position upon
request, climbs out of the pool with assistance
Breath control: Shipping and expelling water on cue, submerging and
blows bubbles on request or cue
Balance: Maintains stable vertical position in an IFD without parental
support, balances on parents knee with minimal support, navigates,
turns 180 to 360 degrees while wearing a PFD
Locomotion: Alternating paddles and kicks

PRESCHOOL SWIM LEVELS

This program offers children their first experience in the pool without
parental assistance. Children are taught the basic skills that are the
building blocks of swimming while learning about pool safety, boating
safety, and the use of personal flotation devices. A caring, certified
swim instructor teaches the 30 minute class. Class participants are
divided into skill levels, and class size is such that the instructor can
provide children with individual attention. Ages 3 - 5 years.

TAI CHI CHAUN - LEVEL I
Tai Chi Chaun or Taijiquan traditionally has been passed down through

a more traditional manner with an emphasis on the foundational
principles and basic movements. As the students progress they will
be taught more challenging movements as well as being exposed to

kids ages 4-14. The classes are designed and taught by Engineering For Kids, a nationwide organization that offers a suite of
programs for children ages 4 to 14 introducing them to science, technology, engineering and math through a variety of workshops
all aimed at developing problem solving skills.

Junior Engineering classes

pre-k - grade 2

Jr. Marine Engineering: Set Sail

What causes something to sink or float? How can engineers help
explore and protect the ocean below? These questions and more are all
explored in Junior Marine. In this class, students explore the concepts of
marine engineering and mechanics, harnessing the power of water and
discovering designs that helps us make the impossible possiible.
Mondays
April 18 - May 23
6:00 - 7:00pm
$85
Jr. Robotics: Play Soccer
6 week session
April 22-May 27 (Fridays)
This is a perfect mixture of fun and learning, using LEGO WeDo Robots.
Using Lego bricks, students build a goal kicker, a goal keeper and cheerful
fans. They also learn how to program and operate their creations using a
laptop computer.
Fridays
April 22 - May 27
6:00 - 7:00pm

Grades 6-8
Electronic Game Design: Platform games
6 week session
April 20 - May 25 (Wednesdays)
During the Electronic Game Design: Platform classes, students will use
Multimedia Fusion 2 to create their own video games. A platform game
is a side-scrolling, Mario-type game where students program characters
and a two-dimensional obstacle course. They attemt to avoid or overcome
enemies and reach an end goal on multiple levels. At the end of the class,
students take home a copy of the game they create.
Wednesdays
April 20 - May 25
6:00 - 7:30pm
$95
Software Engineering - Scratch Video Sensing
6 week session
April 22 - May 27 (Fridays)
Whats more fun than playing an interactive video game? Writing one!
Video sensing allows students to design and program their own video
games and then test them by interacting with the program via webcam. In
this Scratch program, students work together to create their own games,
art and musical instruments while exploring coding foundations.
Fridays
April 22 - May 27
6:00 - 7:30pm
$95

Robotics: Mission to Mars

During the Robotics Mission to Mars classes, students design and program
robots to explore an unknown planet, find safe shelter, and collect soil
samples from the planet. Students use LEGO Robotics and computers to
learn principles of robotics, computer programming and teamwork.
Mondays
April 18 - May 23
6:00 - 7:30pm
$95
Aerospace Engineering: Up, Up, and Away
During the Aerospace Engineering classes, students use the Engineering
Design process to design, create, test and refine a variety of flying
machines. They construct a shock-absorbing system designed to protect
two marshmallow astronauts in a lunar vehicle, create their own airpowered rockets and assemble a hot air balloon model that actually takes
flight!
Wednesdays
April 20 - May 25
6:00 - 7:00pm
