A brief description of the authentic assessment.

My authentic assessment was a Buy-A-Snowman activity. The students were
each given $25 that they had to spend at the store. The students could buy
different types of hats, hair, buttons, sticks, or eyes for their snowmen. They had a
record sheet that they needed to use to keep track of their spending. On this sheet
they had to record how much money they had to spend, the item they were buying,
how much this item cost, and then they had to show their work subtracting the
money. They would repeat this until they were out of money or couldnt buy
anything else from the store because they didnt have enough money. As the
students bought the materials they were able to construct their own individual
snowmen using construction paper and other materials that were available to buy.

How will you remediate for students who demonstrate an unacceptable level of
achievement?
There were three students in my class who did not reach acceptable
according to the rubric (100-90%). These students did not receive points for their
snowmen because the recorded sheet was not set up correctly or they did incorrect
math which caused them to lose points. For my remediation plan I would meet with
the students individually to discuss what happened during their project. One
student did not complete the record sheet correctly so I would go through it again
with them and ask what they didnt understand the first time they filled it out and
ask why they didnt seek assistance when appropriate. I would then take their
snowman picture and the record sheet and go through each item bought to show
them how it should have been set up and to bring light to where they went wrong.
The second student that did not receive the acceptable grade made many
subtraction errors. I would sit down with them and ask them to go through each of
the problems step-by-step so I could complete an error analysis. After conducting
this analysis I would show the student where they are making the majority of their

errors and show them how to correct these errors. I would also show the student
different strategies they could use to go back and check their work so make sure
they were getting the correct answer. If the student is still showing signs of
struggling I would send home additional practice work and then review the work
with them in the following days. My last student that did not receive an acceptable
on this assessment is because they chose not to complete the record sheet at all. I
would sit down with them and ask why they chose not to complete this. If they did
not understand what was expected of them I would go through the record sheet
with them, just like I would with my first student and then go through their
snowman and complete the record sheet together. In the case that the student did
in fact understand what was expected of them and just chose to ignore the record
sheet, which is possible in the case of this student, I would have them sit down and
complete the record sheet and then I would also call home to let the parents know
why the student had to meet with me.
