This slide presents the 28 quarters of Nicosia Municipality. The Municipality was established shortly after the arrival of the British on the island (1878) and, up until the
beginning of the 20th century, consisted only of the city within the walls. In around 1905, with the expansion of the houses outside the walls as well, it started expanding
to all directions. Thus, seven of the within the walls quarters expanded outside the walls too (Arab Ahmet Pasha, Ayios Andreas, Ayios Antonios, Ibrahim Pasha, Takhtel-Khale, Trypiotis and Yeni Jami). On 01 January 1944, Ayii Omoloyites village, neighbouring with Nicosia, was incorporated into the Municipality. Shortly after, on 29
March 1968, Panayia Improvement Board, Kaimakli Improvement Board and Omorphita Village Authority merged with the Municipality. On 13 April 1973, a small part of
Strovolos Improvement Board was incorporated into Nicosia Municipality, as part of Ayii Omoloyites quarter. On 01 August 1977, the now Panayia quarter was split into
two parts, the main Panayia quarter and the new Ayii Constantinos and Eleni quarter. Since 1963-1964, with the drawing of the Green Line (a dividing line between the
Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot section of the city), the expansion to the south, west and east was increased. The brutal Turkish invasion on July and August
1974, resulted in the division of the city in two and the freeze of the development of Nicosia itself, but the exponential development of its suburbs. So today, while
Nicosia Municipality is inhabited by around 50.000 persons, its suburbs are inhabited by around 165.000 persons.
