Lesson Objectives:
The student will be able to
1) Demonstrate basic control of a soccer ball while dribbling
(psychomotor)
2) Show respect for all peers while engaging in the activities (affective)
3) Understand the concept of finding open space while dribbling
(cognitive)
Equipment needed:
24 soccer balls
30-40 cones
6 pinnies
The students should wear cleats and shin guards if they have them
Safety Concerns (make sure to address these!):
Students crashing into each other
Students getting hit in the face with a ball
Unsafe slide tackles
Lesson Plan:
1) Introduction (5 minutes)
Start the lesson in the team room before heading out to the field.
Introduce the topic of dribbling, and briefly explain why its important
when playing soccer
Show video clips of turning fakes found at this website
(http://www.strongsoccer.com/Kingdrills/clipspractice.htm#Scissors).
Show pull backs, inside/outside cuts and cruyff turn. These are
the fakes that the students will be dealing with in todays lesson.
Instruct the class to watch the following clips when they get
home; from the fakes to beat an opponent section of the same
website, they should watch lunges, scissors and rivelino. These
are the fakes the class will work on next lesson. In addition to watching
the clips, instruct the students to practice the moves if they have the
time.
All students take a soccer ball and head out to the field
2) Warm-up
Coordination Dribbling (15 minutes):
Call out various commands (ie: right foot only, left foot only,
insides only, outsides only etc) for the students to do.
Next, call out various body parts. When a body part is called, the
students must use it to stop their ball (ie: elbow! or knee!).
The students then get up again immediately and continue
dribbling around.
Finally, stop the group have the students recall the turning fakes
they just watched.
Have the students practice each of the moves a few times in the
grid at their own pace.
Then, have them dribbling around in the grid again. The teacher
then calls out one of the fakes, and the students must execute it
and accelerate away in the opposite direction.
Bring the students into the centre circle to explain the activity
Two taggers are given pinnies which they hold in their hands
If a tagger hits your ball with a pinnie, you switch places with the
tagger (take their pinnie)
No tag-backs
To score a goal, you must dribble the ball through one of the
other teams goals
Remind the students to use the fakes they just learned, to keep
their heads up and to look for open space on the playing field
4) Cool-down
Stand in the centre of the circle and toss a soccer ball at each
student in turn. If you say catch-it!, the student must head the
ball back to you. If you say head-it, the student must catch the
ball and throw it back to you. If the student makes an error they
are out and may go get changed.
