FearorLove?

ArgumentativeEssay:FinalDraft
Lao Tzu once said, Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving
someone deeply gives you courage. What Lao Tzu is trying to say is that being loved gives
leaders advantages. Leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin D. Roosevelt, and
Nelson Mandela were all leaders who made a difference in history because they were highly
idolized and loved. With this, many others say that being feared is the superior trait, but
loved leaders are more beneficial for the society. Being a loved leader allows individuals to
earn respect, gain trust from others, and be looked up to as a role model.
Being loved gives many individuals a chance to earn respect. Martin Luther King Jr.
had many success and earned many awards during his lifetime. He was a loved leader,
which allowed him to earn respect from many American citizens. As the article, I HAVE A
DREAM: CELEBRATING THE VISION OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. states, Americans
celebrate the life and achievement of one of our most respected citizens Martin Luther
King Jr. Dr. King was a leading force in the drive for civil rights in the United States, and he
showed through words and actions that non-violent, persistent activism can achieve
tremendous results by appealing to the moral conscience of Americans. Martin Luther King
Jr. made an influence on the American citizens by his words about equality. He made an
influence of American history because he earned respect from negro citizens. Finally, loved
leaders have a higher chance of earning respect from others. Despite the respect earned
from loved individuals, some believe that Martin Luther King Jr. didnt earn much respect
because he was assassinated. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated by James Earl Ray, he
didnt like the idea of all individuals to be treated equal, so he decided to kill King. This quote
On May 7, 1968, the Shelby County Criminal Court named James Earl Ray in an indictment
for the first-degree murder of Dr. King, indicates that some didnt respect him, which caused
James to put an end to King. Therefore, some loved leaders didnt earn much respect. Though
Kings assassination was true, there is more evidence to support that King was highly
respected by most people. Because he was respected, King earned many awards during his
lifetime. For example, he was awarded the B.D. award and the Nobel Peace prize. A
biography on King said that, After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological
Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior
class, he was awarded the B.D. in 1951.Study shows that he was respected can deserved the
B.D. award in 1951. In summary, Martin Luther King Jr. was a loved leader, therefore, he was
highly respected.
Continuing from respect earned from being loved, trust is also gained. Franklin D.
Roosevelt had many citizens trust him, he was also re elected for president. Frank Freidel
says that, In 1936 he was re-elected by a top-heavy margin. Feeling he was armed with a
popular mandate, he sought legislation to enlarge the Supreme Court, which had been
invalidating key New Deal measures. This quote proves that Roosevelt was trusted and
many American citizens wanted him to become president for another few years. Many loved
leaders gained trust from many, making them trustworthy. Nevertheless, some disagree
because Roosevelt was also hated because he wanted to change the ways citizens lived. Many
citizens dont approve of the idea of changing their ways of living, but Roosevelt insisted,
making many citizens to have harsh opinions on him. Furthermore, quoted from the article

Franklin D. Roosevelt: Democracy's defender: 1882-1945, But he was hater too -- hated
because he called for a change, and the changes he proposed reduce the power, status,
income and self-esteem of those who profited most from the old order, even though he was
trustworthy, some didnt like of the idea that he had. Additionally, Roosevelt lost the trust
from many citizens because of his action. On the other hand, Roosevelt regained the peoples
trust because he put an end to the Great Depression, which was an event where many people
lost their jobs and lost all their money. As evidence, the article Surviving the Dust Bowl
said that, Franklin D. Roosevelt, the rich governor from New York, offered Americans a New
Deal, and was elected in a landslide victory in 1932. He took quick action to attack the
Depression, declaring a four-day bank holiday, during which Congress passed the
Emergency Banking Relief Act to stabilize the banking system. This quote is saying that
Roosevelt cared for his citizens and would do anything possible to help them out. Finally,
Franklin D. Roosevelt was a loved and respected leader, making him a trusted individual as
well.
To continue, being loved also mean that one will be looked up to as a role model.
Nelson Mandela was looked up to because he fought for rights in his country. To elaborate,
on a biography on Nelson Mandela, it states that, Nelson Mandela became famous for his
long fight against the bad government and racial prejudice. He became a hero to people all
over the world. Nelson Mandela fought for negroes rights and freedom. He shows great
bravery and courage to fight the government. Likewise, one can be looked up to when loved.
Despite Nelson Mandela being looked up to, there is evidence that Nelson Mandela had a bad
influence on people. Nelson Mandela was arrested a several times for trying to overthrow
the government. Still the government refused to change. In 1962, Nelson Mandela was
arrested again. He was accused of sabotage and plotting to overthrow the government. In
1964, aged 46, he was given a life sentence. Nelson Mandela was arrested for plotting
against the government, which caused him to have a bad influence on many. Therefore,
Nelson Mandela had a bad influence on some. While Nelson Mandelas arrest makes a valid
argument, one cannot deny that the only reason Nelson Mandela was arrested was because
he wanted people to live in peace and harmony. Mandela wants to live in a world where
everyone is treated equally. Referring to the biography on Nelson Mandela, this quote
Hearing the elders stories of his ancestors valour during the wars of resistance, he dreamed
also of making his own contribution to the freedom struggle of his people. Mandela dreams
of making a difference in the world and wants everyone to be treated equally. Same with
Martin Luther King Jr. Lastly, Nelson Mandela was one of the worlds most influential role
models in history, because he was such a loved human being.
In conclusion, being loved is the preferable trait because honor is obtained, trust is
achieved, and many will follow in ones footsteps. Although King, Roosevelt, and Mandela all
had their hard times, they all made a contribution in changing history for the better, making
them loved leaders. On the other hand, King was assassinated even though he was such a
loved leader. Continuing, Roosevelt was hated for a limited amount of time because he
wanted the Americans citizens to change their lifestyle. Furthermore, Mandela was sent to
prison for trying to overthrow the African government. Loved people are usually all honored
for their contribution to the world.
