Main Point

How/why it supports the argument

1.(Thesis) Although each source has unique

and different contexts that take a stance on the

legalization of Marijuana, the process of
creating scholarly articles is constrained
because of its structured format, collection of
data, and subject-related jargon they have to
abide to--moves that limit scholarly articles to
a small audience -- while the writers of
mainstream media texts can afford to have an
attractive format, the acceptance of opinions,
and easy access to the piece that allow the
genre to appeal to a larger, general audience.
2. The scholarly articles present the economic
and medical side towards the process of
legalization of marijuana, while the LA Times
article explains the authors opinions towards
the legalization process.

By giving the readers some content about

each article, they will be able to understand
the arguments I will be making throughout the
rest of the paper.

3. Scholarly articles are meant for an

academic audience, while editorials are
meant for a more broad, general audience.

This paragraph continues on with the

background information. But introducing the
audience is critical in elaborating on the
argument within the next paragraphs.

4. Scholarly articles have a structured format,

which constrains the flow of the article.

This paragraphs analyzes the first constraint

associated with scholarly articles.

5. The attractive format of the editorial has a

greater appeal to the common person

In contrast to the previous paragraph, this

argues for the editorial in that it appeals to a
greater amount of people.

6. The title of the editorial attracts the readers This continues on with the attractiveness of
attention
the editorial in which appeals to a general
audience.
7. Everything the author claims in the
scholarly article has to be backed by a
credible source such as data, so they cannot
say that much. Instead, they have to
elaborate on one point.

Since the scholarly article has to elaborate on

one or a few points, they arent able to offer
many interesting ideas, which most people
would prefer.

8. The opinions of the editorial does not have

to be backed up by very credible data such as
in the scholarly articles, so the writers are
able to offer more interesting opinions.

This paragraph is follows in the same context

of the previous paragraph. In contrast,
editorials offer more interesting ideas and
opinions.

9. Scholarly articles are limited because of

This is the last paragraph that explains the

the jaron used. Only people with the same

background as the written discipline will be
able to fully understand the article.

limitations of being able to create and read a

scholarly article. Not many people would
want to read this content, unless they are
familiar with the discipline on an academic
scale.

10.The accessibility of the sources separates

Another affordance: editorials can be posted

on many websites, as opposed to the
scholarly articles.

the limitations for the scholarly journals from

the easy-to-read editorials
11. The process of writing scholarly articles is
very constrained, while authors of editorials
have the freedom to include what they want.

This conclusion paragraph summarizes my

argument.

I rewrote the thesis to include more specifics and moves, so I had to restructure my
WP2. Two of the main problems of the first draft was not having a clear argument, and also
having paragraphs that were too long. So for the argument part, I decided to include
affordances and constraints as part of the main argument, listing three key features for each
source and explaining why they contributed to the limitations of the scholarly article and the
affordances of the editorial.
After this step, I had to restructure the paragraphs so that they would connect with the
argument. I decided to create a paragraph for each feature mentioned, so that there wouldnt
be any paragraphs that were too long. It was kind of difficult to restructure this whole essay
because it was so much different from the first draft and also because of time constraints, but I
am pretty satisfied with the job I did in creating a stronger thesis with better flow throughout the
body paragraphs.
