Reflective Essay
Globally, human rights has been used to make people feel safe and worthy of
being a human. Ive always believe that human rights is a discovery of a moral value
that people look upon that God has given to all human being in this world. Through
the fieldtirp and subejcts, I believe that it has increased my understanding and
awarenese on viewing human rights and its complexity. I am sure that human rights,
fairness and development has always been a complex issue but it has also increase my
understanding on how the world views human rights. Through an active way of
learning, I have perspectively, socially and biblically change my understanding which
also makes a human rights a complex issue.
First of all, the experience I experienced in the last few days have been life
changing. My perspective has always been one of the tool that drives me to see things.
At first human rights has always just been a simple statement that I used to make myself feel human. Through this personal expereince, I now see how human rights arent
a tool that can make me feel human, but love is. Ive been telling my-self how I dont
really need human rights, and it wouldnt do that much too but because of this
personal experience I see lots and lots of issues and people who craved for that human
right. Human rights that I see is just writtings in a piece of paper, but for them its like
a gold. During the fieldtrip, I went to the Disability Yakumm Rehab centre, and it was
a place for people who have Cerebral Palsy. Cebral Palsy is a neurological syndrome
which affected the muscualr system of the person. In the rehab I met children who

Klandita 2
have Cerebral Palsy and was sitted in a wheelchair, inert. I was moved, not because of
how they look like and their ability to not be able to move but because in this rehab
they are given the rights they are supposed to have. Love is given, looking at their
smile makes me very happy, knowing that they are receiving enough love change my
pserspective on viewing how important human rights is. Human rights seemed so
elusive for them, and yet for me I feel like I got it everyday. I couldnt imagine how
bad it would be if they are not given the rights they deserve, they can be neglected and
doesnt feel the love they should be getting. Something that really moved me, is when
this one boy in the rehab showed us his smile of happiness when one of our frineds
called his name. She called his name, and he gave us one of the most beautiful smile,
a smile of embarrasment. It showed a lot of emotion, because not being able to have
that feeling of love is sad. My undertansiding was opened, love is something we all
need. The most important thing is to give love and to let love come in.
Socially, human rights is used to sustain the social relationship between human
beings. Through the experience of Dian Interfidei, I was able to see how lots and lost
of people live and able to survive with human rights. Dian Interfidei teaches me how
each and everyone of us needs each other, even if it has contridiction with our faith. In
order for us to gain that human rights, to feel the satisfaction of the human rights, love
is needed. People will not give you something that you dont deserve and I am sure
even if it is morally given for free you still need to work hard to earn it. In this case,
human rights is provided for free but this world has never been fair so we need to
always work hard for it. A man in Dian Interfidei whom is also a Islam Shiah a
religion that is well known for its untrustable teaching said I still think that my
religon is the most accurate one compare to the others, but I still love you, I love you
(other people with other religon) because you are you, a human. He stated that even

Klandita 3
if he have different beliefs than the others but in Interfidei he is able to love one
another with different beliefs because he follows that one moral law, the human rights.
He obeys the one law that says All human are equal. It changes my understanding
because, before I had this experience I view my social relationship as something
static, something that does not change but it was actually dynamic. I learn that love is
the one that drives people on achieving something bigger. Many people say that
religion and faith is most important thing, and I do believe that but its not just about
faith and religon its also about our social relationship with people. Being united into
one is stronger than fighting alone. We are biologically made and we are made to live
with other people, and so I learn that love together with human rights can bring
people together. When that man said that he will still love him even if their religion
contridicts each other but he loves them. And when you love someone, you are
holding and giving people their rights. You wouldnt love someone without respecting
them, same thing as building emphathy and showing the compassion Jesus showed for
us.
Something that is really interesting is how biblically my understanding change
from the real life experience I had in the fieldtrip. First of all I strongly believe that
human rights is Gods present for us as human being. Human rights is not created, but
discovered by human being and I believe God was the one who gave them the
discovery. Relatively we woulndt know what is wrong and whats right withotu the
knowledge of Christ. Through the experience of going to CD Bethesda the place for
people who have HIV and Aids, in that place I met this one woman who told everyone
that she is still living her life with Aids. Something that trully change my
understanding in biblical context is how this woman trully is loved by God, and that
God doesnt just give the suffering but he proves Him-self that He still cares for her.

Klandita 4
She can stand there infront lots of people, and still can confidently without shame
declare her desease not caring what people say to her. Something that you should be
ashamed, but she turned that shamed into a greater opportuniy to be able to live her
life as a witness of Christ. I thought to my-self why would God give us suffering if He
love us? And that is something pretty much nobody can answer, but I do know that
God does not create that suffering, suffering is created by us humans the sinful
creature that is living in a sinful world. God never intended suffering, suffering is
created from the sin. God also wants to find the purest hearts of the people, and that is
why he doesnt take that suffering away from us and second God will never let any
tempation or suffering that we cant bear. The woman help me improve my
understanding, on how we should be thankful and greatful on what God has given us
because happiness sometimes doesnt happen twice. She also mention how lots and
lots of school and workplace who doesnt accept workers that is carrying HIV/AIDS
desease, which proves us that human rights is still not well distributed especially in
Indonesia. As a Christian, before I went to the CD Bethesda I am not quite happy or
respectful towards the people who have HIV/AIDS because I kinda thing that theyve
commit something wrong and unworthy, but then I learn that not everyone earn that
disease and that sometimes it is inheritied from the parents and they are just blamed
for what they have. God wants us to love like how He loves us, He wants us not to
missused the human rights hev given us. Suffering comes from the violation of
human rights, and its important because its derrived from humans essence of being
created in the image of God.
This personal experience has been a very life changing experience, it widens
my understanding towards how complex human rights issues are. The issues that we
saw in the news and outside of the country could be huge but why not see what our

Klandita 5
country is also facing. Human rights issues is happening thorugh the littlest things we
could not even reach. Everyone deserves human rights, but the reality is not everyone
is experiencing one. Some people, most people is living without human rights and to
be honest none of that is fair but I still believe that it is Gods mysterious plan. We
never know his plan, but if we trust in Him and keep building up that relationship we
would evantually understand. Everything progresses, but it just progress slowly. It is
important to live and strive together in unity than trying to strive alone, because whats
important is to give love and to let love come in.
