CubaCitySchoolboardregardingcomputerscienceeducationinthedistrict.Thepresentation
summarizedgoalsforthecomputerscienceprogramaswellasproposedchangesandthereasoning
forthesechanges.

Mypresentationofthecomputersciencecurriculumtotheschoolboardbestalignswith
AdministrativeStandard2
whichstates:
Theadministratorleadsbyfacilitatingthe
development,articulation,implementation,andstewardshipofavisionoflearning
thatissharedbytheschoolcommunity.
AsanewteachertotheCubaCitySchoolDistrictIquicklylearnedthepastpracticesofthe
districtscomputerscienceprogramanddiscussedthegoalsoftheprogramwiththe
administration,curriculumcoordinator,studentsandparentsinthedistrict.Iwasthenasked
tocreateadepartmentalplanforcomputersciencetopresenttotheschoolboard.Thefocus
ofthepresentationwasaroundwaystobuildmorestudentinterestincomputerscience.With
morestudentinterestwehopetobuildclassofferingsandgivestudentsabetterbackground
incomputerscience.
Thisexperiencegavemetheopportunitytodevelopacurriculumplanforthedistrict.The
computerscienceplanaddresseddistrictstrengthandweaknessesaswellassettingforaplan
ofimplementationtoachievebothshortandlongtermgoals.Theplanwasthen
communicatedwiththedistrictandmorefeedbackwascollectedinordertoensurethatall
needsandconcernsoftheboardwereaddressedinthecomputerscienceplan.
WhatIlearnedaboutadministrationfromthisexperience:
FromthisexperienceIlearnedhowimportantcommunicationcanbetoanadministrator.Notonly
didIneedtheassistanceofdifferentpeopleduringtheplanningprocess,butitwasalsovery
importanttogetthebackingofbothfacultyandtheschoolboardinordertomakechangestothe
computersciencecurriculumsuccessful.Throughtheclearcommunicationandwellprepared
boardpresentationIwasabletogainthesupportoftheschoolboardinordertomoveforwardwith
thechangesproposed.Notcommunicatingwiththoseinthecommunityandwiththeschoolboard
couldhaveleftroomfordoubtofthechangesandledtoalackofsupport.
Ialsolearned,asaneweducatorinthedistrict,howimportantitistohavepositivecommunication
withtheschoolboardearly.Thishelptobuildarelationshipwiththeboardmembersand
somethingforthemtolookbackonwhenalesspositivesituationshouldarise.
WhatIlearnedaboutmyselfasaprospectiveadministratorasaresultofthisexperience/artifact:
Whiledevelopingagoalandplanofimprovementforthedistrictscomputerscienceprogram,I
wasabletoreflectontheimportanceofcommunicationandgoalsettingwithinaschoolbuilding
ordistrict.Bothoftheseareessentialinordertoimproveasanadministrator,teacher,or
educationfaculty.Iratherenjoyedtheprocessofpresentingandthecommunicationwiththe
board.Promotingaprogramatapublicforumwasagreatopportunitytoimprovesupportfrom
thepublicandexpressthereasonsforneededchanges.Opportunitiestocommunicatepositive
activitiesandchangeswithinthedistrictdonotcomeaboutoftenenough.Asaprospective
administratorIthinkitisessentialtotakeopportunitieswehavetosharepositivechangesand
eventswithinthedistrictinordertobuildarelationshipandgainsupportfromthecommunityin
whichtheschoolresides.
