ABSTRACT
LGBT are a unique social group of the society that faces multiple obstacles in societies across
the globe, primarily due to their sexual orientation and gender identity. This issue is not alien to
the Indian society where LGBT have been pushed to the margins over the years. In fact, its a
rather grey area of the society since this group is misrepresented, and most of the times, people
fail to understand the subculture that exists within their communities and the problems they face.
This study is descriptive, shedding light over this issue. Also, the LGBT community faces social
exclusion prominently. They face exclusion from family and society, they also lack protection
from violence, and they have restricted access to education, health services; and public spaces,
exclusion from economy, exclusion from employment and livelihood opportunities. Moreover,
they are subjected to restricted access to collectivization, restricted rights of citizenship and
restricted participation in decision-making processes. This paper addresses this issue giving a
voice to this community. Along with this, this study tries to explore the reasons why this group
resides in isolation and is compelled to give away themselves to margins.
