Trainings & Professional Development
Implementation of the DSM-5 in Residential and Outpatient Settings
(Wedgwood Christian Services Training Institute February 16th, 2016)
This workshop emphasized those portions of the manual that are most relevant to clinicians and
others who work with youth and families in outpatient and residential settings, helping them
develop competency in the changes that impact the processes of assessment and
conceptualization. This training covered the essential changes in the DSM-5, including
elimination of some familiar DSM-IV diagnoses, introduction of several new diagnoses, and the
addition of new severity levels for many diagnoses.
Part 1What it is and Why it Works - We briefly covered the major components involved in
Motivational Interviewing. We discussed how these theories work together to create a thought
process that draws people to deal with the problem of motivation and ambivalence in their lives.
Part 2 How it Works - We covered the major clinicians response involved in Motivational
Interviewing. We discussed how these responses work together to create a strong therapeutic
relationship and assist clients to increase their motivation to change.
Part 3Building Motivation to Change - We covered the major hurdles to change; specifically
the role of ambivalence and fear in the change process. We also focused on traditional roadblocks that clinicians often have that prevent us from hearing our clients well.
Part 4Increasing Internal Motivation and Managing - We covered what to listen for and how to
impact internal motivation and discuss what type of resistance one can expect to experience as
well as how to manage this resistance.

This 2 day training prepared clinicians and direct care staff to use an innovative and evidencebased form of therapy with their clients. Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or
TFCBT, is specifically adapted for children who have experienced trauma and who are having
significant emotional and/or behavioral problems related to their traumatic life events. TFCBT is
a psychosocial treatment model designed to treat post-traumatic stress and related emotional and
behavioral problems in children. Initially designed to focus on treatment of sexual abuse, the
model has been adapted for use with a wide variety of traumatic experiences.
The panels and workshops were designed to shape social policies, social systems, social welfare
(social well-being), and social work practice. Presentations on the systemic and cultural issues
behind continual race issues in not only North America but worldwide.
