LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Name:
Shannon
Lazarus
Subject:
Science

Lesson No: 1 (25th Feb

period 3)

Topic: Science InvestigationVariables

Duration: 50 minutes
Year level: 7

Learning Purpose/Rationale:
1. To engage students in discussions about variables and how to identify them
2. To engage students with ICT (PowerPoint)
3. To have students work collaboratively and share, thoughts and ideas.
4. Work through a short practical tennis ball and ruler

Learning outcomes:
1. Understand the difference between the three different types of variables.
2.

Identify the independent and dependent variables when looking at the aim/key
question for an investigation.

Assessment:
AT1: Assess prior knowledge of students through engaging them in
discussion and recap
AT2: Diagnostic assessment: Observe students conducting the experiment and
gather ability to effectively differentiate between Independent, Dependent and
control variable.

Timing
in

Procedure:

5 minutes

Teacher activities:
Get class to settle down and recap on
previous lesson

Learner activities:
-

Ask students what they remember about

the experiment

Define hypothesis

Parts of a practical report

Write it down on the board when
students give the answer

Students should be paying

attention
Actively engaging in class
discussion
Diagnostic assessment of
prior knowledge and recap of
previous information

10 minutes

Use everyday example such as cooking as

a means of an experiment to introduce
variables
E.g. when we cook at home or drink a
cordial we dont pay much attention or
realize how we carry out scientific
investigations everyday

Students engage in
discussion
They should be
engaged and
participating

Lets say youve been down to McDonalds

and you bought large fries. When you
taste the fries they are not salty enough
for you and you become unhappy. But
then you look in the bag and find salt
sashes. You add a little bit of salt at a time
before it tastes just perfect and youre
happy.

20minutes What did we have to change in that story

to become happy?

Go through PowerPoint

10 minutes

5 minutes

Introduce variables

IV/ DV

Ask students to copy down definitions:

simplify it on the board If necessary

Question: in the case of the frieswhat would be the IV and the DV?

What could we control?

go through examples

explain the aim of the practical

- provide students with a tennis ball and
a ruler
- students to work in pairs
- draw up table on the board and ask to
copy down from board
- students need to identify IV/DV/Control

ask students to place equipment back

on the trolley
- clean up their area and pack up
Teachers resources:
- PowerPoint
- Science Quest 7
- White board markers
Students resources:
- Science Quest 7
- Workbook
-

Students should pay

attention
Should copy down the
IV/DV/Control
definitions

Students to listen to
instruction
Students will be
working in pairs
Copy the table from the
board
Engage in practical and
ask questions to clarify
any doubts
