Final Assignment Performing Arts Management

I have decided to research a tour for the Edmonton-based dance collective, The Good
Women Dance Collective (GWDC). I was given permission by its founder (and my
friend), Ainsley Hillyard.

I chose this company for a number of reasons. In the past five years, GWDC has
reached an extremely exciting level of popularity in Edmonton. Most major local arts
events, from the Fringe, to the Refinery parties at the Art Gallery of Alberta, to the
Mayors Celebration to the Arts, include a performance by the collective. Ainsley and
the three company members have established themselves as the company to be, or be
involved with. Their company classes are highly popular, and their repertoire has
received critical acclaim.

For the collectives upcoming season, the group has been collaborating with an
Edmonton music cornerstone group, Pro Coro, on the creation of an unique
composition based on Tristan and Isolde. I felt this would be an appropriate and
exciting piece of work to consider and research for a tour.

Based on the collectives previous works, set design is likely minimal, as is wardrobe,
making this show an ideal project for touring. The collective collaborates with a tightknit circle of artists in Edmonton, which likely reduce artistic salaries and fees. Further, a
domestic tour in the summer time is far likelier than a winter performance, given travel
will be less expensive.

Given the nature of Love Fail, the simplicity will work in the collectives favour for a
touring proposal. Numerous venues across Canada would work well for the piece. The
venue would not necessarily need to be a formal performance venue. The basic
requirements are a stage that is large enough for 8 performers, access to a basic
lighting system, and sound box.

About Love Fail

Love Fail is an exciting new collaboration between GWDC, Pro Coro Canada and New

Music Edmonton. The score is a modern retelling of Tristan and Isolde which
interweaves details of the timeless love story with contemporary sources. The score will
be performed live by an all-female quartet with simple sound enhancements and a
range of small instruments played by the vocalists. Interacting with the vocalists on
stage will be a quartet of female dancers, choreographed and performed by GWDC.

Tour Overview
Love Fail Tour would take place over a number of weeks beginning July 1, 2016. It

involves a series of performances in venues chosen by the collective, based on the

pieces technical requirements as determined by the Technical Director. The process
includes a rehearsal period at each city requiring two local volunteers: a local assistant
stage manager and a local front of house manager. These connections would be
established by members of the collective and artistic team.

Following the inaugural performances of Love Fail, GWDC plan to tour the following
Canadian cities:

Calgary (2 performances)

Winnipeg (1 performance)

Toronto (2 performances)

Mississauga (1 performance)

Montreal (2 performances)

Total performances 8
