Zeppelins
A zeppelin is a type of airship named after the
German Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin who
pioneered the airship development in the 20th
century. It was able to revolutionize the way of
flight and was much more accurate than balloons
that had been used prior to WW1. The zeppelin
was used by both the Germans and the Allies
during World War I, however the Germans made
far more extensive use of the airships and were
able to use them more efficiently and frequently
than others.
Convoys
A convoy is a group of ships or vehicles traveling
together, usually accompanied by armed troops, or
other vehicles to protect them. The thought behind a
convoy was that they would be able to escort ships
hauling passengers or cargo. Before the convoy
system was in place, the British navy suffered massive
losses at the hands of German U-boats. These ships
traveled in a zig zag pattern to confuse enemy ships,
once they were closer to ports they were joined by
destroyer fleets for protection.
