Fraction Stations

Date: 4/8/16

Subject/ Topic/ Theme: Math

I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
This lesson includes four stations where students get to practice adding, subtracting, and finding
equivalent fractions.
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan? (If applicable.)
This is lesson 4 in the fraction unit. In this lesson students get to practice working with fractions in
stations.
What are your objectives for this lesson? (As many as needed.) Indicate connections to
applicable national or state standards. If an objective applies to only certain students write the
name(s) of the student(s) to whom it applies.
1) SWBAT add, subtract, and find equivalent fractions.
2) SWBAT use technology to practice adding, subtracting, and comparing fractions.
3) SWBAT solve real world problems that deal with fractions.
II. Before you start
Prerequisite knowledge
and skills.
Assessment
(formative and
summative)

Students should know how to add, subtract, multiply, and simplify fractions.
They should also know how to find equivalent fractions.
Formative: I will be walking around making sure students are
understanding how to solve the fraction problems at each station.

Summative: I will be able to see how well students did on the IXL app by
tracking their answers. I will also be looking at their recording sheets from
the story problem station.
Universal Design for Learning Networks/Domains (see UDL Guidelines)

RECOGNITION
Multiple Means of Representation
Options for Perception
The content will be presented through
iPads, story problems on cards, and games.

STRATEGIC
Multiple Means of Expression
(Action)
Options for action/interaction
Students will be moving to four
different stations solving fraction
problems. They will also be doing
this through technology.

Options for Language/Symbols

Students will see fraction vocabulary on
the iPad apps, in the story problems, and
they will have to write symbols in solving
problems in War.

Options for Expression

They will get to express their
knowledge of fractions through
using technology, playing games,
and solving story problems.

Options for Comprehension

Students will have learned how to add,
subtract, compare, and find equivalent
fractions. These activities serve as
practice doing these things with fractions.

Options for Executive Function

Each game or activity will have
their own strategies and goals to
keep students motivated and give
them feedback on how they are
doing when solving the problems.

AFFECTIVE
Multiple Means of
Engagement
Options for recruiting interest
Students will be moving to four
different stations doing various
activities to solve fraction
problems. They will also get to
use technology at two of these
stations.
Options for Sustaining Effort &
Persistence
The students get to use
technology at two of the stations
and each one has something new
to do.
Options for Self Regulation
The games and apps on the iPads
will challenge students to get to
new levels. They will also be
motivated to beat their opponent
in the War game and at the same
time they will be practicing
several fraction addition
problems.

Materials-what materials
(books, handouts, etc) do
you need for this lesson
and do you have them?

12 iPads, Fraction Learning (free) app, 4th Grade Math app, IXL app, pencils,
computer with timer on screen, story problem cards, recording sheet, scrap
paper, dominoes, equivalent fraction board, marker chips

Do you need to set up

your classroom in any
special way for this
lesson? If so, describe it.

Stations will be set up around the room, and students will rotate to each
one every 10 minutes.

The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher
activities and student activities
- Introduce the stations that students will be rotating to
- There will be 4 groups of 6 students that will rotate every 10 minutes

Split students into groups of 4 and set a timer on the screen where they
rotate to a new group every 10 minutes
Stations:
#1 iPads Fraction Learning (free) have them practice addition, subtraction,
and equivalents
#2 story problems (have students record their answers on the sheet that
goes with the questions)
#3 iPads 4th Grade Math (fractions) & IXL if exceeds the daily limit on first
app
#4 equivalent fractions game or War by adding up the dominos and the
larger sum wins (they will need scrap paper)

2
- Ask students what station they enjoyed the most
Closure
min
- Ask them what they learned about solving fractions in the real world
