Course Design Document for

RSU 14 Teacher Contracts & Maine State Teacher Certification

Purpose of the Course In the State of Maine, all public school teachers with a professional
certification must earn a total of 90 professional development hours every 5
years. In my school district, teachers can earn these hours through a variety
of activities, but must use a particular computer program and follow very
specific steps to receive the recertification hours for these activities. Though
earning these hours is a professional requirement, many teachers are
confused about the process and leave it until the very last minute because
they are already so busy in the classroom. Creating a course to make it easy
for the teachers to understand the process of earning these recertification
hours seems necessary.
Audience Description

The target audience for this course is all teachers with a professional
certification in my school district.

Major Course
Learners will be able to correctly complete all required steps to earn hours
Objectives (Terminal) toward their professional teaching recertification.

Objectives

- Learners will use a provided list to determine which kinds of professional


development activities can be used to earn recertification hours.
- Learners will determine how many recertification hours are awarded for
each kind of professional development activity.
- Learners will determine the correct pre-approval form required based on
the type of professional development activity they are interested in.
- Learners will correctly complete and submit their pre-approval form.
- Learners will submit the correct documentation as evidence of completion
of their professional development activity.

Learners will categorize common professional development activities into


their matching required prior-approval forms.

Instructional Strategy I plan to use an online module with several slides that describe the
for RLO
differences between the types of certification, the state requirements for
receiving/renewing a professional teaching certification, the professional
development activities commonly used to meet these state requirements
along with the hours awarded for each activity, and the correct forms
required for each activity (for both before and after the activity is
completed). I plan to use tutorials, open-ended learning environments, and
problem-based learning.

Lesson 1: Types of certification & state requirements.

- professional certification
*A note about probationary & continuing teaching contracts will also be
included as they are often confused as being a part of the state certification
process

Lesson 2: Common professional development activities used to meet state


requirements and the number of hours awarded for each activity.
- taking/teaching college courses
- mentoring a student teacher
- leading or attending professional development workshops in certified
content area

Lesson 3: Required forms for teachers to fill out and submit before and after
completing a professional development activity.

Im honestly not sure how long this will take to develop because Im very
unfamiliar with developing lessons on an online module. If I were to use
PowerPoint, it would probably take me several days to included everything
and get it the way I want it to be.
