Step 2
Questions:
1. What are at least two strengths and two weaknesses of your school?
Based upon the assessment tool, it does not seem like my school has any strengths. To be fair I feel like I am at a wonderful school
with amazing people. When it comes to nutrition and healthy eating there is a lot of room for improvement. Two areas of focus could
be on after school and curriculum.
2. Describe each strength and weakness based on your observation/experience as well as your results from the School Assessment
Tool.
A strength not noted by assessment tool was the positive attitude maintained at my school. I think that this key feature when placing an
emphasis on a healthier environment and life style. In my experience a positive attitude can have a large impact for positive change. A
weakness is after school programs. We do not have any programs that focus on being active for recreational fun (not a committed sport
that cost money) or that help educate students and parents on healthy eating. This limits our students options to be active after school
and gives them more time to get into trouble. The second weakness is curriculum that does not involve movement, nutrition, or any
health related activity. It could be so easy to incorporate small movement activities throughout the day, but we just dont.
3. What are at least two ways to improve the policies in place at your school? Explain detailed information for each way and what
you expect from each way.
I do not know if it is necessarily the policies that are the problem but rather that the school has not focused its attention to this area. I
do not think the mesa district or any mesa school has policies in place preventing its students from being healthier. Rather it is due to
the fact teachers have an endless amount of work and not nearly enough time.
4. What are at least two ways that you can you use this information to engage administration, teachers, parents, students and the
community in promoting more healthful behaviors? Include a specific description for how to use the results from the school
assessment tool as well as your ideas for improvement.
Like I said before, I do not think the policy is necessarily the problem. We have policies in place to address the problem, and now we
need to utilize them.
5. How can the information obtained be use to support your potential topic for the Signature Assignment?
This information gives me a starting point for my school, and it can only get better from there. It gives me a wide range of areas to
choose and focus on, which is sometimes a benefit and sometimes a challenge.
Step 3
All facts and specific numeric information came from Arizona Report Cards and School Digger websites. I am at Smith Junior High
School, a public school, which is located in the Mesa Unified District. This school is classified as a Title 1 school with a letter grade of
B. In the school year of 2014-2015 there were 1,040 students enrolled, where there was a ratio of 19.3 students to 1 teacher. There
were 57.3% of students were on free/ reduced lunch. The demographic of the school population is as follows; 33 African American
students, 25 Asian students, 630 White students, 328 Hispanic students, 17 American Indian students, and 7 two or more race students.
