The schematic of an oil pipeline network is shown below. The nodes represent pumping/receiving stations. The
distances between the nodes are given in the figure (not to scale). The cost of transportation is proportional to
the distance between the nodes.

As shown in the figure, the oil supply to the network is through nodes 1 and 3, while the demand is at node 2
and 4. Construct a transshipment model for the least cost transportation of oil from nodes 1 and 3 to nodes 2
and 4. Do not solve the resulting LPP.
Provide the probable optimal solution to the problem through visual inspection and without resorting to any
calculations.
Variables:
X12, X17, X34, X37, X54, X56, X68, X72, X75
Costs:
C12, C17, C34, C37, C54, C56, C68, C72, C75
Minimize:
(X12.C12) + (X17.C17) + (X34.C34) +
(X37.C37) + (X54.C54) + (X56.C56) +
(X68.C68) + (X72.C72) + (X75.C75)
Constraints:
X12 + X17 = S1 = 50000
X37 + X34 = S3 = 60000
X12+X62+X72 = D2 = 90000
X34 + X54 = D4 = 20000
X56 = X62
X75 + X72 = X37 + X17
X75 = X54 + X56
