Unit Goals:
Final performance of Jake Runestads Nyon Nyon
Compare and discuss recordings of different performances of Nyon Nyon
Master vocal production of unique modern sounds through healthy methods of singing
Student Objectives:
Students will be able to (SWBAT) perform Nyon Nyon with appropriate musical style.
SWBAT sing with modern techniques that are healthy for their voices.
SWBAT perform advanced and layered rhythms accurately with effective dynamics.
SWBAT demonstrate critical listening skills through analyzing recordings and identifying
differences in various performances.
Teacher Techniques and Strategies
Teacher will lead students in exploring healthy vocal techniques.
Teacher will provide practice tracks for students use outside of rehearsal.
Teacher will divide Nyon Nyon into main ideas, devoting sectional time from four
separate rehearsals to teach notes and rhythms of each main idea.
Teacher will devote time from the final four rehearsals to combine parts and focus on
appropriate balance and layering.
Teacher will focus on her conducting gesture and encourage the students to interact with
her while performing to control rhythmic accuracy and dynamic interest.

Equipment: Piano (pitch source)
Assessment Tools
The teacher will perform a summative assessment following the final performance. Students will
be assessed based on a rubric, with categories pertaining to:
Pitch accuracy
Rhythmic accuracy
Musicianship
Individual improvement

Teacher Goals:
1. While instructing or conducting, to engage the face and use more effective facial expressions.
2. While conducting, to lower the hands and aim for an ictus point that is at waist-level.

You are responsible for the music you learn in rehearsal. It wont be taught again!
Once the notes and rhythms are taught, it is up to you to add the
words and memorize those sections for the following rehearsal.

1. TBB: mm 37-end. B2 learn B1 part for now.
a. M 37-39: for now, learn as if 6/8 time. Build the cluster chord and slide up 1 octave, check
intonation and other major problems
b. M 43-48 all B learn B1 on singing syllables
c. M 43-48 T: emphasize the WAH of WAH-oo
d. M 49-50: All chant rhythm, then sing rhythm
e. M 51-53: Have fun, REALLY EXAGGERATE closing and opening the [w]
f. M 37-end: Run, each on his own part
If time,
g. All learn m 29-32 B1 line
h. M 11-22: 2 measures repeated, last measure is different
i. M 25-26
2. SSAA: mm 13-22.
a. M 13-16: all chanting on the singing syllables
b. M 13-23: reading on your own part, no S1 nyon

MEN:
1. TB: m 11-26
a. 11-12 are unique (pitches). Focus on and exaggerate the dynamics
b. 13-14 repeat throughout this section. Focus on and exaggerate the dynamics. You should be able to
perform the dynamics independently and interestingly without conductor.
c. M 22 is different (Tenor-pitches)
d. M 25-26 accent new notes as they layer on (m 25 beat 1 & 3, m 26 beat 1)
2. TB: m 33-37
a. Learn new material, focus on transitions
3. TB: m 4-10; Clean and open sound, tone is almost straight (very little vibrato). Again, focus on the
dynamics, particularly the fp and crescendo. The initial f sound should be treated like a tenuto (Miss
Ortbal can demonstrate); use a big sweep/slide into each note to help. Close to the N here.
4. TB: m 27-33; melodic lines only (T2, then T1 and B1)
5. TB: m 1-4; Close to the N here. The gliss is 4-beats long.
WOMEN:
1. SA: p 10; focusing on transitions. Exaggerating the rhythms and Ws at the very end.
2. SA: m 33-38; focusing on transitions and sound quality.

a. M 1-3; Close the the N here. The gliss is 4-beats long.
b. M 4-5; Focus on S transition
c. M 6-10; layering parts, find the style of the A line. Focus especially on the accents and small
crescendos.
