SPEECH BY H.E.

THE FIRST LADY MARGARET KENYATTA

DURING THE HANDING-OVER CEREMONY OF THE 38TH
BEYOND ZERO MOBILE CLINIC TO TRANS NZOIA COUNTY
27TH APRIL 2016
Ladies and Gentlemen
Good afternoon.
First, I respectfully wish for us to remember former First Lady
Mama Lucy Kibaki - she was a constant reminder to all of us of
the importance of holding on to strong family values and the
importance of good health for all. Thank you.
I am pleased to be with you today. Governor Khaemba, and the
people of Trans Nzoia county, thank you for the warm welcome
to your county, famous for its park that hosts rare and exotic
wildlife. The county hosts tourist attractions such as the Mt.
Elgon National Park on part of which sits Mount Elgon, Kenyas
second highest mountain, Kitale Nature Conservancy and Saiwa
Swamp National Park.
To the First Lady of Trans Nzoia, I applaud you for your efforts in
protecting women and children within this county. As a mother,
you have embraced the role of mentoring new mothers; caring
for the fate of orphans; and providing economic opportunities
for women to help them gain financial independence by
exposing them to innovative businesses and new farming
methods.
I am made aware that Cancer and HIV prevalence among
women as well as early child marriages of our girls continue to
be a challenge making our youth more vulnerable to
discrimination in their communities. Women and girls are
important in completing the family structure and therefore men
and indeed the entire community needs to become more
sensitised on the negative impact of poor health and to
encourage testing for all diseases.
Bwana Governor, I note your commitment to invest in and
expand health services in the County. Trans Nzoia is a huge

contributor to Kenyas food security, and therefore ensuring a

healthy population is critical. During the tour today, I have
witnessed the County Government's efforts to provide efficient,
reliable, accessible and affordable healthcare.
Recently, we celebrated World Autism Day - Autism Spectrum
Disorder is a serious neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs
a child's ability to communicate and interact with others. It also
includes restricted repetitive behaviors, interests and activities.
These issues cause significant impairment in social,
occupational and other areas of functioning. Although this may
not be prevalent here in this County, we need to raise
awareness of and recognise children with disabilities as they
are an integral part of our society. They teach us compassion
and care and we must try to do everything that we can to
integrate them into society.
Access to health for every citizen of our country Kenya is
everybodys business. We all have a part to play to achieve our
common goal of universal health and I am confident that we
will achieve it for our people.
I am happy to finally be here delivering Trans Nzoias mobile
clinic which has been donated through partnership with
Commercial Bank of Africa. The First Lady of Trans Nzoia Mrs
Khaemba is one of the most active and supportive members of
the County Spouses association and I know that she has waited
patiently for this clinic and even joined me in the First Lady's
Half Marathon to help raise the funds for this particular clinic.
This clinic is well-stocked with equipment, and medication and
so I urge you to make good use of it as the goal is for this
mobile clinics to supplement, the work of hospitals and health
centres within this county.
My hope, is that through a wide range of health initiatives and
partnerships, Trans Nzoia County and Kenya will quickly attain
the goal of zero preventable child and maternal deaths, zero
new HIV cases and 100 per cent immunisation of babies against
childhood diseases.
So I once again, thank the Governor, the First Lady of Trans
Nzoia and all other County First Ladies who are here as well as

all the partners and friends represented here today for joining
me and for playing your part on this journey.
With those few remarks, Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my
pleasure to hand over this mobile clinic, to the people of Trans
Nzoia County.
Thank you and God bless you.
