Standard 3
Plan for and implement effective
teaching and learning

This artefact is a lesson

plan taught to
kindergarten during week
three (3) of my fourth
professional experience.

During delivery, the lesson became that of a rich

collaboration between the students and myself.
Students ideas and input helped to form the
basis of discussion where their ideas were highly
valued, building on their prior knowledge and
adopting a strong sense of connectedness to the
current narrative (Little Miss Muffett). Their
learning was supported by a range of teaching
strategies, inclusive of ICT and the selection of
appropriate resources.

ASPT 3.2
The sequencing of this lesson was
designed and structured to scaffold
and engage students in the
exploration of the life cycle of a
spider. Planning was well
implemented which effectively built
on students prior knowledge and
understanding/s and took into
account students point of need.
Transitions between activities built
upon one another and lead into each
other smoothly, creating a rich,
meaningful and well-understood
learning experience

3.2 Plan, structure and sequence

learning
Plan lesson sequences using
knowledge of student learning,
content and effective teaching
strategies.
3.3 Use teaching strategies
Include a range of teaching
strategies.
3.4 Select and use resources
Demonstrate knowledge of a range of
resources, including ICT, that engage
students in their learning.

This lesson was an

extension on the unit of
work on nursery rhymes
in which students were
learning Little Miss
Muffett. Student interest
in spiders stood as a
response to the initial
reading of Little Miss
Muffett. Subsequently, I
took this as an
opportunity to extend the
nursery rhyme beyond
the classroom and into
context, bringing the
story into a real life
perspective for the
students

Students were active participants in the activities

involved within the lesson, which worked as an
engaging progression of new learning. This
supported recognition of how my students learn
(kindergarten) and that is hands on.
After having looked at and talked about the
stages and different aspects of the life cycle, as
an activity to deepen understanding, students
together solved the spider lifecycle puzzle
sequence. In this activity students used their
visual literacy (pictures on cards) to define what
was happening and subsequently, decided where
they each needed to go to complete the life cycle

ASPT 3.3
The lesson used a range of teaching
strategies relevant to the content.
ASPT 3.4
The lesson successfully made use of
and demonstrated knowledge of a
range of resources to support and
engage students in their learning

(beginning, middle, end). This was purposefully

planned and thus, modeled so that students were
then able to complete the task that followed
independently (which was then used as a
summative assessment of the lesson).
Within the organisation of the lesson, students
were given multiple opportunities to engage in
rich communication that worked as both
effective teaching and learning. These prospects
included knee-to-knee (substantive
communication), group discussion, problem
solving and questioning.
The learning intentions extended and supported
students prior knowledge and interests however
still directly linked to content from Little Miss
Muffett. This process successfully reinforced for
the students that what we learn in class is
purposeful and extensive beyond the classroom,
connecting it back to a real life context and
integrated aspects of science into literacy
sessions.
Students formed a basis of deep knowledge,
understanding and engagement. Each student
was involved in all three of individual, small
group and whole class activities. This effectively
worked to differentiate according to ability
levels and encouraged group as well as
individual quiet work. Additionally, the activities

incorporated and functioned as multiple

assessment strategies, both formative and a
having a summative piece produced at the end.
