Date: April

M&M activity:
Student will be given a cup of M&Ms and asked to count how
many are in the cup. (Diagnostic)
Student will add a certain number of M&Ms and then subtract a
certain number to see the different ways to reach 18. (Formative)
Worksheet:
Give a set of numbers and student will have to add and subtract
to form 18. (Formative)
Exit ticket:
3 questions that will determine if the students understood the
lesson.

Computation: The action of mathematical calculation.

Addition: The process of adding something to something else.
Subtraction: The process of subtracting something from something else.
Fact Families: A set of alike numbers that can be added or subtracted from
each other.
Doubles: When both addends are the same.

Worksheet

Students will be in small groups of four to five based on abilities.

Ms. Hyman already has students placed in five small groups.
Will have M&M people as a visual of my example.
Today we will be reviewing how to add and subtract up to eighteen and we will
use M&Ms to help us make fact families. (Insert students name), do you know
what a fact family is? (Give time to answer. And ask another student). Well, its
numbers that are alike that can be added together like 10-2=8 or 8+2=10.
Could someone else give me an example?

1. Give students worksheet with different fact families on it along with cup
of M&Ms.
2. Ask students to first count how many M&Ms are in the cup.
3. Will start with addition first. Ask students to take out one M&M from the
cup. They will then take out more M&Ms to make 18. Next they will put
them all back into the cup and take out 2 M&Ms then figure how many
more they will need to make 18 and so on.
4. Students will go by the worksheet to see what operation to perform next.
After they complete the performed operation, they will write the correct
number in the space provided.
5. I will be monitoring the students but after they get the hang of it I will let
them finish the worksheet independently.
Worksheet will correlate with how many M&Ms they will need.
Fact Families to 18.docx
Remember to ask students individually while they are working:
What are other ways to reach 18?
Explain how you would get to 18 with only a certain number.
Compare two equations and explain what makes them different
and the same.

Exit Ticket:
o Will have 4 equations, 1 easy (N), 1 medium (P), and 1 that is
harder (AP) and will force students to expand their knowledge.
