Project Proposal

A. Abstract
The title of my paper is The Legal Analysis of Campus Assault and Dating Violence. The name
of my project will be Yes means Yes. I chose this as my topic because there have been many
incidents recently in regards to sexual assault on college campuses. By analyzing this topic more
closely I will be able to create awareness about the issue while informing others. My project
name came about through the common phrase we are all taught, No means No. This implies
that sexual acts are considered to be consensual unless the person say no. Instead I am
encouraging the motto that Yes means Yes. Saying yes is more alerting and confident because
you are agreeing to the acts, instead of not saying anything at all. The guiding questions for my
research are; what current laws are enforced on college campuses in regard to sexual assaults?
What consequences are currently in place to address on campus assault? What is classified as
sexual assault? What correlation is there between the Violence against Women Act and specific
laws colleges enforce? How are sexual assault claims processed and handled?
My consultant for this project will be my 11th grade English teacher Mr. Hodges. Mr. Hodges is a
great person to help me with my project because, he is very knowledgeable when it comes to
creating ideas. Mr. Hodges is also very organized, and goal- oriented which will help me when it
comes to sticking to my events timeline. In addition, Mr. Hodges is very social and can help me
communicate with professionals.

I would like to host an interactive seminar for my project. This interactive seminar will be
specifically for high school students to inform them about on campus assault and how to prevent
it. The admission price for the event will be items to help women of the Samaritan House such
as; children / adult clothing, household items (paper towels, trash bags, laundry detergent, etc.),
baby toys, and canned foods and condiments. A list will be provided to all English teachers so
that students who cannot attend the event can still donate. These items will then be donated to the
organization. During this interactive seminar students will be able to go to participate in many
different activities and mini-seminar stations to speak with professionals in the field. For
example, there will be a campus or city police officer to discuss what the charge of sexual assault
entails and how it can affect your life in the long run including the processing and charging steps,
a self- defense instructor to demonstrate self-defense tactics that can be used when faced with
threatening situations , a representative from Samaritan house, to talk about the organization and
its purpose, and a guidance counselor, to discuss how to deal with reporting an assault or how to
tell someone if you know of an assault that has taken place. In the event that some of the
professionals cannot attend I would like to try and get a digital representation of their
information in the form of a video. That way I can still portray the necessary information to those
attending even if the professionals arent physically there.
My target audience will be high school males and females. I feel that this audience will benefit
the most because for the majority of them their next step in life is college. This project will
inform them of the importance of recognizing forms of assault and precautions they can take to
prevent it. My goal is 35 high school students, and I want all of them to take away something
from my project. My project will take place at First Colonial High School sometime in early
April. The end product will be evaluated by the participants through a survey asking about how

they enjoyed the project and if they learned something new. Materials needed will include
handouts for participants, t-shirts for the host team and teal ribbons as a take away since teal is
the color that symbolizes awareness for sexual assault.

D. Project Documentation
I will document my project steps and event through; progress reports, pictures, videos, time logs,
and journals.
E. Project Justification
This project is a quality project because it will not only challenge me but, it will benefit my
community. I feel that this project will naturally hone in on the importance of awareness
specifically in my age group. This project will be able to inform many high school students of
the necessity of being alert and observant especially in the college realm. I also really enjoy
making a difference and I feel that this project will do just that. This project will be able to
provide such important information that could even save a life. I will also be challenged to

organize this event. I will have to put myself out there especially to professionals in order to
convey to them that I am passionate about the issue and I would like their support as well.
Creating this project is worthy of my time because it will test my strengths as an individual as
well as empower and impact my peers.
F. Project Paper Connection
The focus of my paper is to analyze dating violence and sexual assault, specifically highlighting
on- campus assault. For my project I want to inform high schoolers about the topic. For many
high schoolers their next step will be college. For this reason it is essential for them to be able to
understand what sexual assault is and how to recognize and prevent it in a college atmosphere.
This is why at the event they will be provided the opportunity to engage with officers,
counselors, and self-defense teachers so that they will be more informed and prepared.
G. Academic Honesty
I understand that any academic dishonesty by me on any part of the project will
result in failure of the Senior Project and forfeiture of the Legal Studies Seal on my
High School diploma
