Women In Science: The More the Merrier by Kimberly Ochoa

How many women attending college do you know who are majoring in Science?
It might take you a while to figure that one out. As you may know, the science
department has always been one with great advancements and achievements leading to
great new opportunities. Today, a very small to none amount of recognition is given to the
small percentage of women who take part of and help these accomplishments. The
amount of woman attending college for science degrees has increased for the past 20
years but still remains at a low number. Youre probably thinking, Isnt there already
organizations trying to help this process? The answer to that is both yes and no.
Although there are several universities and organizations, such as one in Medical
Research in Melbourne, Australia, there are still an unsatisfying percentage of women
joining these careers. The inconvenience of not having enough members as a whole
nation can lead to drastic changes. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization from 1997 had formed a policy under Productivity which read:
Economic as well as cultural developments heavily depend on creativity and innovation.
This is basically stating the importance in growth of women graduating with science
degrees. Without productivity, especially in such fields, sustainable development cannot
be achieved. The result of womens creativity in these fields can highlight and enhance
womens status and bring abstract political principles (such as gender equality) to life by
raising general public consciousness towards this goal.

With a strong relationship to economic development, reconciled with societal

needs, and emphasis on individual creativity, more women would be willing and inspired
to join careers in the science workforce. I think why not encourage more programs onto
high school students? The media holds back so much information; we barely know whats

really going on in our universe. The issue addressed to women and men equality cannot
be focused upon until the issue of the lack of woman in the field can be fixed first. When
schools bring more attention to scientific studies such as medicine discoveries and their
power, or nebulas exploding in mid-space during a certain time, to even just the simple
fact that there will be a full moon soon. These are the things that make the youth
question. Not only do they question what it is that they are being taught in general, but
also they learn to question their beliefs, themselves, and their purpose. When a young
mind is fed an incredible amount of knowledge, those providing the knowledge are
creating the future themselves. It is a cycle that can be helped through numerous of
experiments to encourage young woman to join. Especially as today, woman who are
fighting for equality all around can become a part of something that can prove to rest we
as woman as just as important to the field as men through further discoveries.
In conclusion, the more women who choose to participate in changing the world
through science the merrier. It has never been an easy subject but it is one that is
fascinating and sometimes even unexplainable. To gather plenty of young girls, especially
senior level from high schools, a movement can be made and awareness could be brought
onto women and their lack of recognition in the science work field. Whether it takes
opening new clubs and organizations within schools or the cities, or putting up posters,
having meetings about the subject, whatever it takes to gather as many people as
necessarily can be done through encouragement. Women are known to cause chaos
amongst each other but when we unite, we become one of the most powerful groups
and movements across the world.
