Ulrich, David, W N. Smallwood, and Kate Sweetman. The Leadership Code: Five Rules to
Lead by. Boston, Mass: Harvard Business Press, 2008. Print.

This books purpose is to define the essential rules of leadership by revealing ways in which
leaders can better themselves and help those charged with building better leadership in their
organizations. This print comes well equipped with rules, self-assessments, and surveys which
can be used by people of all ages. The question of what makes a good leader, a good leader has

been tackled by many, but there are a plethora of varying interpretations. In The Leadership
Code, an overall definition(s) is made and they also provide tips for ways effective leadership
characteristics can be executed. Through countless interviews with a variety of respected CEOs,
academics, experienced executives, and seasoned consultants, the authors heard the same
reoccurring essentials repeated. This is how the 5 rules of effective leadership were made. They
were not made up with the use of imagination or personal experiences from the authors, it was
based off of research and continuity among a broad group of individuals. In this print, the authors
breakdown great leadership into day-to-day actions, making it more relatable, as well as
applicable, to any audience. They break it down into such a simple process that anyone can take
these rules, practice them daily, and incorporate it into their leadership responsibilities.
Making leadership a simpler issue and also simplifying the term, leadership, as whole can
attract so many more people and give them the confidence they need in order to lead effectively
in any situation. Often times people do not try to take leadership because they dont feel well
equipped to do so. This book provides ways to boost this confidence across the board and better
the leaders for future generations.

This is an article that focuses its main points around basic leadership theories and how these
were used to form the framework of research in the field of athletic leadership. Some of the basic
theories they are referring to are things such as trait, behavioral, and situational and how these
contribute to the overall development of sports leadership. This article comes well supported

with the use of information on some of the shortcomings and successes of the relevant research
efforts. In addition, it also provides insight into the future and encourages the reader to dig
further into sports related leadership. Encouragement to do deeper into the text is very important,
getting people out of their comfort zones when it comes to leadership is one of the most
challenging tasks. Giving people the confidence to go farther than they believe they are able to
achieve are the steps we must take in order to better the leaders we see on a day-to-day basis.
I believe this article is going to contribute very well to my inquiry. It takes on a different view of
sports leadership and really focuses on the research behind it all. Not only that but it incorporates
on the basic theories involving leadership and that is going to benefit me greatly when trying to
explain that to my audiences. Providing these theories is going to give my inquiry more depth
and more angles from which I can get go off of.

Randolph Feezell, author of this book as well as a philosopher and athlete, presents a
philosophically serious, analytic, and insightful treatment of sport. This book focuses on the
nature, attraction, and overall limits of sports. It answers the question of what exactly sports are
and why there is such heavy emphasis on it, why does it attract so many people? This books
attempts to answer the question of why sports play such a heavy role in so many peoples lives.

Feezell builds on these conclusions, he also addresses important ethical issues, such as cheating,
etc.
This goes along with my inquiry because I am focusing on the strain we put on athletic leaders to
do well in societys eyes. They must overcome all of these different temptations, however that
doesnt always happen the way we would like it to. I think answering the question of why sports
attract so many people will help my answer the questions of society expectations. I also think the
author and his credentials are going to provide a more in depth and completely different
viewpoint of the issues at hand. This author definitely stands out among my other resources and I
look forward to incorporating this work into my inquiry.

Crust, Lee, and Ian Lawrence. "A Review of Leadership in Sport: Implications for

Lee Crust and Ian Lawrence, the authors of this article, from York St. John University College,
have gathered a significant amount of research regarding leadership within sports with a
concentration on football management. In this article it discusses and reviews research leadership
in sport and considers the implications of this work in relation to the complex task of effective
football management. While my inquiry is not solely based on football management I thought
this article would still contribute greatly to my project because it provides different perspectives
of leadership in different areas, all while staying within the sports realm of things. This article
also provides insight from all levels of sport competition and that is going to broaden my inquiry
so that I am not restricted to one area. It is important to first see the foundation from which our
athletic leaders are being brought up, it can help to explain why some behaviors are shown in
certain situations.
This article is going to work well within my research because it is providing me with different
perspectives and different forms of research. As I mentioned before, it is not restricting me to one
area of sport and leadership within that area, it is giving me insight to others and that is going to
help with connecting different behaviors to different athletes.

Vacchiano, Ralph. "Vacchiano: Cam Newton No Leader as He Bails after Loss." NY

The author behind this article is Ralph Vacchiano and he was one of the many people that did not
agree with the actions displayed by Cam Newton after the Super Bowl game this year. The type
of reaction shown in this article is what gave me my inspiration to write my inquiry about
leadership within sports. This very upset and disappointed reaction is what sparked my
curiosity. Why did Cam Newton catch so many grief from this one incident? In this article,
Vacchiano discusses the actions shown by Newton and how these were not actions of a good
leader. He goes on to say he declined to be a good loser. He refused to be gracious in defeat.
There were no compliments of his opponent or explanations for his poor game. This article
expresses the frustration shown by so many in our society, they expected more from Newton and
were outraged when he acted in such a way. But why? Why was he not allowed to show his
frustration and sadness after one of the biggest games of his career? Wouldnt anyone else act in

a similar way? You could argue yes and no, but the problem is that any other person would not
have been so criticized by it.
This article was the exact kind of argument against my own personal view that I was looking for.
I knew I needed to find opposing views to my inquiry and this was just it. Not only is it referring
to the very incident that sparked my interest in this inquiry in the first place, but it goes into how
this particular person views leadership and what it means to them. This article is also speaking
for a lot of people so it will provide good insight to other views and may also give a gateway for
my audience to better relate.

Lapchick, Richard. "Professional Sport and Public Behavior." Professional Sport and

Richard Lapchick, author of this article, is the Director for the Center for the Study of Sport in
Society. In his article he discusses the emphasis that sports play in our daily lives and how the
athletes living in this world behave in the public eye. While anyone could probably guess that
this is no easy way to live, he goes on to discuss the expectations held by society and how
leaders should behave. To relay the fact that sports play such a heavy role in todays times, he
references other leaders saying, politicians and ministers use sports jargon to explain the world
and morality. This just tells us that in many areas, others look to sports for clarity as well as a
way to relate to their audiences. He also discusses athletes who have gotten caught up in criminal
acts and how these actions affect the institutions of professional sport and college sport. These
issues are very serious in todays times and need to be focused on because athletes actions do not
just affect themselves or those closely associated. These actions affect major institutions and the
people following them along with them in their athletic careers.
This article is going to provide other viewpoints of leadership and also provide further insight to
the consequences of bad behavior shown in the public eye. While my inquiry isnt focused too
heavily on the criminal side of things, it definitely needs to be mentioned because this, if
anything, is going to affect the way we see our leaders and what messages these people are
sending to the generations looking up to them.

Jones, Jonathan. "Panthers QB Cam Newton's Developing Leadership Style: Fun, but

Jonathan Jones, author of this article from the Charlotte Observer, and supporter of Cam Newton
and the things he is trying to accomplish in his athletic career. Like so many, Jones sees Newton
as a very strong leader and believes, if the right steps are taken, he will become one of the best
leaders of today. In the short time that Cam Newton has been in the spotlight, he has been able to
gain the respect of so many. Of course there are opposing opinions, but, for the most part, Cam
Newton has only shown greatness in his work thus far. In this article, Jones goes further into the
rewarding aspect of leadership but also the difficult part about it as well. There is no way being a
leader for this many people can be an easy task. He discusses the stresses that Newton and his
team members go through each day, balancing work and play. Not only are these athletes
expected to perform great on the field or out on the court, etc., but these people are expected to
perform well in every other aspect of their lives as well.
This article is going to contribute greatly to my inquiry because it provides examples of great
leadership shown, as well as the difficulty of this task at the same time. All too often we forget
that everyone is human, no one is perfect, but for some reason we put athletes up on this higher
level and expect more from them. And when these expectations are not met, the player and/or

team as a whole is criticized greatly. I look forward to incorporating this information into my
inquiry and providing yet another viewpoint of leadership within the sports world.

Tugend, Alina. "Praise Is Fleeting, but Brickbats We Recall." The New York Times. The

Alina Tugend, author of the article Praise is Fleeting, but Brickbats We Recall attempts
to explain why we remember bad or negative situations more than happy or good ones. She
supports her own claims with scholarly sources, such as Roy F. Baumeister, a professor of social
psychology at Florida State University. Tugend explains that there are both physiological and
psychological factors playing into this strange question. It requires more energy for us to process
negative situations and often times we use more difficult vocabulary to describe these situations,
because of this we tend to hold onto these memories more than happy ones.
This article contributes greatly to my thesis paper. It really provides it with the right
amount of explanation to get my point across and also gives it more depth and a more scholarly
outlook. I really like what this information has provided me with. It has opened up other
pathways for me to take my discussion further and really dig deeper into my thesis for a better
inquiry project.
