The main requirement is completing the courses listed above with a 2.75 GPA or higher.
Observation assignments are determined by each individual course's professor and will be seen
in my education classes. Elmhurst College requires a minimum of 100 hours of field experience. All
Department of Education courses include a field requirement. The Satellite Field Experience Network
will assist me in obtaining field experience placement for upper-level courses (Elmhurst, 2016).
Student Teaching - What did you learn about options for student teaching at your chosen
college/university?
My final class, SEC-455, will be my student teaching experience. I will complete one full
semester at a local high school teaching the subject of my major. I will receive support from the
my professors through on-site visits (Elmhurst, 2016).
Part Five: Licensure
What content test will you need to take?
In order to become an English teacher and receive my Professional Educator License w/
Secondary Education endorsement, I must take the edTPA test along with the English: Language
Arts content area test.
What did you learn about the edTPA?
The edTPA is a multiple-measure assessment that correlates with state and national standards,
such as the Common Core State Standards. The purpose of this exam is to make sure that new
teachers are able to teach effectively and support student learning from day one. The edTPA is
the first standards-based assessment that is nationally available in the U.S. This assessment
requires that candidates demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to help students learn. It is
comparable to other tests that measure the application of skills, such as the bar exam in law. The
edTPA is a subject-specific assessment, which includes the Secondary Education teaching field.
Overall the edTPA focuses on potential teachers demonstrating how they will apply their
knowledge and skills to promote learning in the classroom (edTPA, 2016).
How do you apply for licensure?
After receiving my bachelor's degree and passing the edTPA test and content area test, I can
apply for my Professional Educator License with the ISBE. I must then submit an application fee
and also register in the region/county I am teaching in.
