Dashaa-Introduction-1

Dashaa means period. So when a birth chart is drawn, Dashaa is also known
for the child. There are many Dashaa systems are in vogue. Most important
Dashaa Systems are -Ashtottaree Dashaa
Chakra Dashaa
Chara Dashaa
Conditional Dashaa
Kaal Dashaa
Kaal Chakra Dashaa
Mool Dashaa,
Naaraayan Dashaa,
Sudarshan Chakra Dashaa
Vinshottaree Dashaa
Mostly astrologers use Vinshottaree Dashaa, because Vinshottaree Dashaa
System is used for rough calculations and then the specialized people use
Kaal Chakra Dashaa System for the fine-tuning birth time rectification.
Under Vinshottaree Dashaa system, a human being's age is 120 years and it
covers all the 9 Graha (Planets) Mahaa Dashaa periods. See the Table below
under two headings - "Graha Mahaa Dashaa" and their "Period of Dashaa".

How to Know Which Mahaa Dashaa is Running?

Graha Mahaa Dashaa is decided by the Nakshatra in which the Moon
resides at the time of birth. All Dashaa goes in the same sequence as they
are given here. Why? Because the Vinshottaree Dashaa system depends on
Nakshatra, and Nakshatra go in a sequence. This can be explained by the
following table -Lord of

If one is born in, for example, in Bharanee, P-Phaalgunee or P-Aashaadhaa

Nakshatra, he will be considered born in Shukra's Mahaa Dashaa. One
should know the Jaatak's Mahaa Dashaa like this for all the Janm
Nakshatra. Each Mahaa Dashaa has its own time period. See below "How to
calculate Native's remnant Dashaa period.
Actually in their Mahaa Dashaa and Antar-Dashaa periods, generally planets
give effects as per their strength and their lordship mixed.
BPHS Dashaadhyaaya - Antar-Dashaa of a functional Malefic in his own
Mahaa Dashaa gives good results; whereas that of a functional benefic in
his own Mahaa Dashaa gives ill results. This is the principle of
contraindications.

Mahaa Dashaa, Antar-Dashaa, Pratyantar Dashaa, Sookshm Dashaa

In practice, it is sufficient to these three basic levels: Mahaa Dashaa Antar-Dashaa - Pratyantar Dashaa. If you have exact birth time and within
long Pratyantar Dashaa (eg in Saturn, Raahu, Mercury, Jupiter periods) you
can include the 4th level, Sookshm Dashaa (Sookshm Antar-Dashaa ) as
well.
For Very Beginners:
Mahaa Dashaa (MD) are the main planetary periods,
divided by sub-periods called Antar-dashaa (AD). Sub-periods are divided
by
sub-sub-periods called Pratyandar-dashaa (PD), which are subdivided by
sub-sub-sub-periods called Sookshm-dashaa (SD), which can be further
subdivided into Praan-dasas (PrD).
Maha Dashaa : shows general direction, the coloring and general trend of a
life period, for many years
Antar-Dashaa: shows concrete events and occurrences .
Pratyantar Dashaa : activates and causes concrete occurrences.

Therefore, looking at Antar-Dashaa and Pratyantar Dashaa are most

important for timing events and predictions

[BPHS, Ch. 46]

2-5. Maharshi Paraashar replied. O Braahman! Dashaa are of many kinds.

Amongst them Vinshottaree is the most appropriate for the general
populace. But the other Dashaa, followed in special cases, are Ashtottaree,
Shodashottaree, Dwaadashottaree, Panchottaree, Shataabdik, ChaturshitiSama, Dwisaptati-Sama, Shashtihayani, Shat-Trinshat-Sama. Our ancients
have described these different kinds of Dashaa, based on Nakshatra.
6-11. O Braahman! Some Maharshi have made a mention of Kaal and Chakra
Dashaa, but they have recognized the Kaal Chakra Dashaa, as supreme. The
other kinds of Dashaa, propagated by the sages, are Char, Sthir, Kendra,
Kaarak, Brahm Graha, Mandook, Shool, Yogaardh, Drig, Trikon, Raashi,
Panch-swar, Yoginee, Pind, Naisargik, Asht Varg, Sandhyaa, Paachak, Taaraa
etc, but in our view all these Dashaa are not appropriate.

Why Different Dashaa Systems?

Every Dashaa system looks at our life from a very different perspective.
Life - particularly a human being's life - is a very complicated issue; the
ancient sages have been knowing this very well and
therefore they developed more than one Dashaa system.
P.V.R. Rao absolutely correctly states in his textbook 'Vedic Astrology: An
integrated approach' (parts of this book available in JHora help):
'When we learn a new Dashaa, the first question we should ask is "when
should it be applied and what results should be seen in it". It is illogical to
use 10 different Dashaas interchangeably. Mixing up various Dashaa
without knowing the subtle differences between them results in vague
explanations. An intelligent astrologer will realize that different Dashaa
are good at showing different kinds of events. Even when different Dashaa
show the same event, they show it from different angles and focus on
different aspects of the same event. Without appreciating this, one cannot
understand why Maharshi described tens, if not hundreds, of Dashaa
systems.'

Use of Multiple Dashaa Systems

1. At first look at which level the native is in Naisargik stage (Naisargik

Dashaa MD level primarily).
2. Then look at Kaal Dashaa and define in which time background the native
is currently living.
3. Then look at Mool Dashaa - based on strongest planet in a Kendra, from
Lagna, Moon or Sun - and look for the roots, the fundament of the current
experiences of your client. Mool Dashaa is the ground, the basement, the
root of your life.
4. Look then at Vinshottaree Dashaa which is based on Moon's Nakshatra
at birth, your 'birth star'. Moon shows your mind, attitudes, habitudes and
how your mind is manifesting events - or simply the color of your different
life periods. According to Phal Deepika, Vinshottaree Dashaa starts from
Krittikaa (Sun's Nakshatra), Krittikaa is the true birth of the zodiac
(Ashwinee is the conception, Bharanee is the pregnancy). Vinshottaree
Dashaa is the head and the brain of your life, your mind and mentality
(conscious and, moreover, unconscious).
5. Then look at very important Kaal Chakra Dashaa, based on Moon's
Navaansh placement at birth. Kaal Chakra shows the evolution of your
hidden Navaansh (D-9) potential in your life - it is based on Nakshatra Pad/
Navaansh (320' segments). Kaal Chakra Dashaa is what you see with your
eyes in distance - what you want to reach in your life, the destination. It is
a very reliable Dashaa indeed.
Note:
Correct calculation method is 'Ranchacharya Method' - change this option
in your software (although 'Nakshatra Pad Iteration Method' seems to
work as well. Santhanam or Raman method is a wrong calculation method
- taking Antar-Dashaa sequences stated in BPHS seriously).

6. Then look at applicable Conditional Dashaa (Shat Trinsh Sama Dashaa or

Shodashottaree - one of both is always applicable). Look if the correct AD
sequences are given in Ashtottaree and Shodashottaree, according to BPHS
it must begin with the MD Lord. Conditional Dashaa show the development
of Sun, Moon or relevant Graha in your life, including all influences we know
(particular Nakshatra, Tithi, strong planets). They can become dominant in
your life. They show your feet - how you are running towards reaching your
life goals.

7. For material manifestations look at Chara / Naaraayan Dashaa,

particularly regarding Arudhaa (placements from Arudhaa Lagna, Arudhaa
Bhaav and Arudhaa Graha).
8. Next look should go at Sudarshana Chakra Dashaa (if applicable), the
annual progression of Lagna, Moon and the Sun. And you can track Tithi
Pravesh Annual Chart with Vinshottaree / Conditional Dashaa for shortterm predictions.
9. Last glance at annual solar chart (Taajak Chart), which is based on the
annual solar return in a native's life.
You see, each Dashaa lightens human life from a very different
perspective. All perspectives seen together enable good and correct
predictions.
I (Revati) won't work with Char or Narayana Dashaa any more and I
cannot recommend it, but everyone has the liberty to draw one's own and
perhaps different conclusions. I will stick to and work with Varnad and
Chakra Dashaa; Mool Dashaa as mixed Dashaa ('Graha in Raashi Dashaa')
of course as well as Nakshatra Dashaa.

Char / Naaraayan Dashaa

- Raashi Dashaa based on a fixed sequence of Raashi (unlike as in Mool
Dashaa) - described in Jaimini Sutras and therefore part of Jaimini
astrology - Naaraayan Dashaa shows Maayaa (illusions) and manifestation,
how you are perceived in the world and the results/effects thereof
- Jaimini astrology is based on Arudhas (of Bhaav and Graha) and Chara
Kaarak (Jaimini almost did not use natural karakas as Parashara) therefore use Arudhaa and Chara Kaarak for determination of results is
necessary (and argala placements thereof!)
- Naaraayan is highly reliable (if you use Arudhas and Chara Karakas)

Kaal Dashaa
- Dashaa based on the natural progress of time based on birth time
- described in BPHS
- As it is based on the normal sequence of planet we know from the
weekdays sequence, only natural significations of planets is important (not
their placements in chart)
- Kaal Dashaa provides the background of our life, the frame; it supports or
limits other Dashaa' effects

Kaal Chakra Dashaa

- Dashaa based on Navaansh (Nakshatra Pad)
- described in BPHS and Phaala Deepika (attention: only *Nakshatra Pada
Iteration Method* is correct looking at the ancient masters!)
- Kaal Chakra Dashaa shows evolution of your hidden potential and
experiences enabling it, the development of your personality - it shows
opportunities and fortunes (but dangers and problems as well) - you have to
look at first in your D-9 chart, then in your D-1 to make correct
predictions. Kaal Chakra Dashaa in fact indicates nothing but the evolution
of your Dharm in this incarnation! - KCD is highly reliable
Note:
Navaansh is hinting at your future, showing in a way the end effect, the
final result of your horoscope - the aim, the goal. Navaansh shows hidden
strengths inside you and the need to develop them in your life! NavaNavaansh (D-81) then would be the next step after reaching your
Navaansh, it hints into your further future. So Kaal Chakra Dashaa 'the
most respectable of all' indicates important events in your life as well - it is
from my point of view the real 'Dharm' Dashaa - the Dashaa of D-9,
Navaansh!

Mool Dashaa
- Dashaa based on Raashi, on the sequence of the most powerful Graha in
Raashi more exactly. The most reliable Dashaa - the first look should go to
Mool Dashaa.
- Mool Dashaa is described in Phal Deepikaa by Mantreshwar.
- It shows the roots, basics, fundaments of your life, the true reality
behind it. It indicates the main experiences for your true self.
- It is started from Lagna, Moon or Sun, whichever is stronger, and you
should count houses from the basic reference (La, Mo, Su) and - as usual take MD Lord as Lagna for Antar-Dashaa periods (and then AD Lord as
Lagna for PD periods)

Vinshottaree Dashaa, Conditional Dashaa

Vinshottaree Dashaa;

Vinshottaree Dashaa-Example

- Dashaa based on Nakshatra and their sequence (which is normal in

Vinshottaree Dashaa and special in Conditional Dashaa)
- Vinshottaree Dashaa is described in BPHS and Phaal Deepika. - It shows
your mind and his evolution, development, how your mind, mentality and
consciousness creates your world and manifests particular experiences.
- Conditional Dashaa throw light on particular constellations in your natal
chart.
- Dashaa interpretation should be started by the nakshatra placement of
the MD, AD, PD Dashaa Lord, then regarding the three Nakshatra lordships

of the MD, AD, PD Dashaa Lord (and the planets posited in Nakshatra of
the Dashaa Lord). Of course Raashi / Bhaav in which these Nakshatra are
placed are very important as well.
- Vinshottaree is highly reliable (but be aware of correct birth time and
correct Ayanaansh use - correct Ayanaansh is slightly different from
standard value, between 0 deg 1 min and 0 deg 2 min - which can results up
to three weeks difference in timing)
12-14. Beginning from Krittikaa, the Lords of Dashaa are Soorya, Chandra,
Mangal, Raahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu and Shukra in that order. Thus, if
the Nakshatra from Krittikaa to the Janma Nakshatra are divided by nine,
the remainder will signify the Lord of the commencing Dashaa. The
remaining Dashas will be of the Graha in the order, given above. In Kali Yug
the natural life-span of a human being is generally taken, as 120 years.
Therefore Vinshottaree Dashaa is considered to be the most appropriate
and the best of all Dashaa.
15. The periods of Dashaa of Soorya, Chandra, Mangal, Raahu, Guru, Shani,
Budh, Ketu and Shukra are 6, 10, 7, 18, 16, 19, 17, 7 and 20 in that order.
16. To find out the remainder of the Dashaa, operating at the time of
birth, first find out the expired portion of the Dashaa of the concerned
Graha. This is done, as follows -Multiply the Dashaa period of the Graha concerned by the period of the
stay of Chandra in Janma Nakshatra, that has expired and divide that
amount by the total period of the stay of Chandra in that Nakshatra. The
figure in years, months etc so arrived at will be the expired period of the
Dashaa. If this figure is deducted from the total period of the Dashaa, we
will get the balance of Dashaa at the time of birth.
[Phal Deepikaa, Ch. 19]

2. Count the stars from Krittikaa in groups of nine. The planets presiding
over the Dashaas belonging to the nine Nakshatras composing each group
are respectively the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Raahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury,
Ketu and Venus and the span of their Dashaa periods are respectively 6, 10,
7, 18, 16, 19, 17, 7 and 20 years.
See the Table above to clarify what has been mentioned above:
3. Now is described the method of finding the remainder of the Dashaa of
planet at the time of birth. Find out the Nakshatra in which the Moon is
posited at birth and for how many Ghatikaa it will remain after birth in

that Nakshatra. Multiply those Ghatikaa by the total period of the Dashaa
and divide it by 60. The quotient will represent the period in years still to
elapse. Any remainder remaining may be converted into months by
multiplying by 30 and dividing by 60 and so on.
[Horasara of Prithuyasas, Ch. 31]

The Dashaa periods, in the scheme of Nakshatra Dashaa, otherwise known,

as Udu Dasha, or Vimshottaree Dashaa, are: 6, 10, 7, 18, 16, 19, 17, 7 and 20
years, respectively, for Soorya, Chandra, Mangal, Raahu, Guru, Shani,
Budha, Ketu and Shukra. These Dashaas are Lorded by the Graha in the
above order, counted from the Nakshatra Krittikaa. The order of the
Dashaas counts from one's birth Nakshatra (ie the one occupied by
Chandra), or the Nakshatra, in which Lagna is rising at birth.
The ending periods of all the Graha will be normally evil. During the
conclusion of the Dashaa of Soorya, Mangal, Shani and Raahu, there will be
diseases, destruction of wealth, disputes and evil incidents. The native's
death can occur during the Dashaa of a Grah Yuti with a malefic, or with
Randhra's Lord.
The Dashaa of the particular Nakshatra, which is occupied by a malefic
Graha, will bring about sorrow. The extent traversed in the said Nakshatra
by the said cruel Graha will indicate the possible time.
In the three groups of Nakshatra, if there is a weak malefic without
Drishti from a benefic, such Dashaa will cause death in its end.
In the Dashaa of a Graha occupying Raashi Sandhi (ie the area, where one
Raashi ends and the other one starts), there will be diseases. In the end of
the Dashaa of the Graha, that heads towards the 30th degree of the Rashi
concerned, death will take place.
The portion still to elapse in the Janma Nakshatra should be multiplied by
the Dashaa years (as mentioned in Shlok 1 of this Ch) and divided by 60.
The quotient will indicate the years to lapse, as yet in the Dashaa
concerned. Similar calculations should be made through the remainder to
ascertain the months etc.
The Dashaa effects should be predicted in the same order (from the
balance of Janma Dashaa obtained, as per Shlok 17). To obtain the Bhukti
period of one Graha in the Dashaa of another Planet, multiply the figure of
years mutually and divide by 120. The Bhukti period in years is revealed.
The effects of Antar-Dashaa stated earlier, should be applied.

The results of Ketu will be, like that of Mangal, while Raahu's effects will
be, like Shani's. The other Graha produce even effects due to their nature.
Thus, the good and bad of the Dashaa should be understood.
The effects of the Nakshatra (ie Vinshottaree Dashaa system) is
acceptable to all, as stated. After very minutely examining these, the
Dashaa results should be predicted.
Should Soorya in transit reach the Raashi occupied by the Bhukti Lord at
birth, the effects will be marked to the particular Dashaa.
The effects should be calculated from the stronger of the two, ie Chandra
and Lagna at birth.
[Jaimini Sutras, Adhyaaya 2, Pad 4]

[Nakshatra Dashaa to be taken over from Paraashar and others]

SU. 18. Dashaa counted from the constellations at birth have to be learned
and taken from Paraashar, Gargi, Vyasa and other well-known writers.
[Note by Revati: Vinshottaree Dashaa is not mentioned in Kalyana Varmas Saravali - the
only Dashaa it mentions is Mool Dashaa.]

How Jupiter can be treated as benefic if it happens to be in 6th

House from Lagna?
1. BPHS-Ch 49 -Results of Dashaa - Shlok 2 and 3 means:
"Dashaa emanates two types of results, one of the general nature based on
the Swabhaav of the planes (Planet's Swabhaav is decided by the Lordship
of houses as per rules given in chapter 34 -Yog Kaarak of BPHS and Laghu
Paraasari) and the second one of special category based on the placement
of planets (many rules for this are given in BPHS, Phaldeepika chapter 6,
Jaatak Paarijaat chapter 11, Madhya Paraasari etc) .The results of the
planet will also depend on the strength of the planets.
Now come to the Lordship of Jupiter of 6th House, which is possible in two
cases:
1. For Cancer Lagna :
Jupiter is prime Benefic.
Lord of Trisadaya are Paapee, which means they generate lot of desire,
anger, ego and greed , otherwise they are good for material prosperity
being Lord of Upachaya houses also.
For Cancer Lagna , Jupiter is the lord of 6H as well as 9H. The Lord of 9H
becomes powerful benefic that too when Jupiter is the Lord.
In Shlok 7 of ch 34 of BPHS , Paraashar teaches us: When a planet is Lord
of two houses, its ownership of more predominant house will stall the

effects due to another owning comparatively less prominent house and will
give its results accordingly.
Jupiter is also friendly to Lagna Lord Moon.
Thus BPHS has termed Jupiter as benefic for Cancer Lagna. This does not
mean that the effects of 6H Lordship will extinguish. It will and generate
Astra or Harsa Yogas as per Phal Deepikaa Ch 6.
2. For Libra Lagna
Jupiter becomes the Lord of 3rd and 6th Houses. A prime benefic, when
becomes the Lord of two Upachaya places gives lot of material benefits.
Bhaavaarth Ratnaakar says that Jupiter gives Yog results for Libra Lagna.

Dashaa

Dashaa
There is always a Dashaa (Mahaa Dashaa or Period) running for a native. In
fact all the Dashaa years adds to 120 years which is taken as a life span of
a human being under Vinshottaree Dashaa, that is why one or the other
Dashaa is always running for a native.

Antar-Dashaa
Inside that Mahaa Dashaa all the nine planets run their Antar Dashaa (subperiod). They also run sequentially in the same specific order in which these
Periods or Mahaa Dashaa run. The Antar-Dashaa's order is that the first
Antar-Dashaa is whose Mahaa Dashaa (Main Period) is running, for example,
in Chandra Mahaa Dashaa, the first Antar Dashaa will be of Chandra, then
Mangal, then Raahu and so on; and thus all the 9 planets will take their turn
during that Mahaa-Dashaa.

Pratyantar Dashaa (Bhukti)

The Antar-Dashaa is also subdivided in Pratyantar Dashaa. Thus Pratyantar
Dashaa (Sub Sub-period or Bhukti) is also a kind of Antar-Dashaa (Subperiod), but this time it is under the Antar-Dashaa (Sub-period) of Mahaa
Dashaa. It also runs in the same way as the Antar-Dashaa ran under Mahaa
Dashaa - by nine planets, the first Antar Dashaa being of the same planet
as its Antar-dashaa planet's, and in the same sequence as all the Dashaa
run. For example, if Soorya Mahaa Dashaa is running, then the first Antar
Dashaa will start with Soorya Antar-Dashaa, and in Soorya Antar-Dashaa,
the first Pratyantar Dashaa will also start with Soorya Pratyantar Dashaa
or Soorya Bhukti and all other planets' Antar-Dashaa will run sequentially.

Thus a Mahaa Dashaa is divided into 9 Antar-Dashaa, and

an Antar Dashaa is divided into 9 Pratyantar Dashaa or Bhukti in the
sequence given above.
Since all planets have their own kinds of effect, their effects are found
under their Mahaa Dashaa, AntarDashaa and Pratyantar Dashaa.
It should be noted that not all period have the same result all the time,
there will be other factors also, like transits, strength of planets in picture
etc. Reasonable Dashaa effect analysis is not possible without Varg
consideration - and Nakshatra / Nakshatra Pad interpretation.
BPHS clearly states that an AD of a Graha in a MD of a damaged planet (in
bad Avasthaa like in very unfriendly Raashi, debilitated, conquered in
planetary war or combust) can bring very good results. Let us think if this
were not the case - eg a debilitated Saturn and 19 years only of problems!
This is, God sake, not the case, due to the different ADs and PDs and the
different entry charts of each AD. So, there is always a hope, even when
Dashaa of a badly placed Planet is to come due to the various Lagna to use
(Horaa and Ghatee as well) and the various AD entry charts.

* * **********************************
56-58. Maharshi Paraashar said to Maitreya - "O Brahman! The effects of
Antar-Dashaa in the Kaal Chakra, which have been described above, are
based on Savya Chakra. The effects of Antar-Dashaa in the Dashaa of the
Raashi in the Apasavya Chakra have to be assessed, after taking into
account the benefic and malefic natures of the Lords of the Raashi.
People have to enjoy the good, or suffer the bad results, according to their
good, or bad actions in the previous births. Everybody suffers, or enjoys
accordingly. The peculiarity in this respect is, that inauspicious results have
been ascribed to malefic.
But, if during the Antar-Dashaa the Graha concerned is a friend of the
Lord of the Dashaa, the results of the Antar-dashaa will be favorable. If
the Graha concerned is a benefic, but an enemy of the Lord of the Dasha,
his Antar-Dashaa effects will not prove favorable. This is how the AntarDashaa effects have to be analyzed and conclusions arrived at.
[BPHS, Ch. 46]

Effects of Kaal Chakra Dashaa of the Raashi in Lagna and other Bhaav
131-132. In the Kaal Chakra Dashaa of the Raashi in Lagna the body remains
healthy and the native spends a life with many kinds of comforts. If the
Lagna Raashi is a benefic one, the good effects are realized fully. If the
Lagna Raashi is a malefic Raashi, there is likelihood of ill health. If a Graha
in exaltation, or in its own Raashi occupies Lagna, the native is respected by
the king, or government and acquires wealth.
[Note by Revati:
Benefic Raashi are Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius and Pisces;
Malefic Raashi are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Scorpio, Cancer and Aquarius.
Lordship of natural malefic or benefic planets is decisive.]

133-134. In the Chakra Dashaa of the Raashi in Dhan the native receives
good food, enjoys happiness of wife and children, gains wealth, achieves
progress in the educational sphere, becomes a clever conversationalist and
moves in good society. If the Raashi be a benefic, good effects are realized
in full, otherwise the effects would be of a mixed nature.
135-136. Happiness from co-borns, valor, patience, comforts, acquisition of
gold, ornaments and clothes and recognition by the king, or government, are
the effects in the Kaal Chakra Dashaa of the Raashi in Sahaj. If the Raashi

is a Benefic, the good results are realized in full, otherwise adverse

effects may also be experienced.
137-138. Good relations with kinsmen, acquisition of land, houses, or a
kingdom, conveyances and clothes and enjoyment of sound health, are the
effects of the Chakra Dashaa of the Raashi in Bandhu. If the Raashi is a
benefic one, the good effects are realized in full. If it is a malefic Raashi,
adverse results are also experienced.
139-140. Being blessed with wife and children, favors from Government,
enjoyment of sound health, good relations with friends, achievement of
fame, good progress in the educational sphere, patience and valor are the
effects of the Chakra Dashaa of the Raashi in Putra.
If the Raashi is a benefic one, the good results are enjoyed in full.
If the Raashi is a malefic one, adverse effects are also experienced.
141-142. Danger from the king, fire and weapons and the possibility of
suffering from diabetes, Gulma and jaundice are the effects in the Chakra
Dashaa of the Raashi in Ari. If the Raashi is a malefic one, the above
adverse effects will be experienced in full. There will be some mitigation of
the evil effects in the case of a benefic Raashi.
143-144. Marriage, conjugal happiness, being blessed with children, gain of
agricultural products, cows and clothes, favors and recognition from the
king and achievement of fame, are the effects in the Chakra Dashaa of the
Raashi in Yuvati. The beneficial results will be experienced in full, if the
Raashi is a benefic one. Meagre good effects will be realized in the case of
a malefic Raashi.
145-146. Destruction of a residential house, distress, loss of wealth,
poverty and danger from enemies are the effects of the Chakra Dashaa of
the Raashi in Randhra. The adverse effects will be realized in full, if the
Raashi is a malefic one. Some mitigation in evil effects may be expected in
the case of a benefic Raashi.

Ashtottaree Dashaa

Ashtottaree Dashaa is perhaps the second most important Dashaa System

in India, after Vinshottaree Dashaa System.

BPHS describes two conditions to use it -(1) If Raahu is in 4H, 5H, 7H , 9H or 10H from Lagna Lord,
(2) Birth is day in Dark Half of Moon or birth in night during bright half of
Moon.
It is not specified in BPHS whether both conditions apply.
The first condition is cited to others - but the second condition belongs to
Paraashar Rishi and in my own D1, both conditions are met and Ashtottaree
works wonderfully well. But at the same time Vinshottaree Dashaa also
continues to work.
Theoretically, if both conditions mentioned above are compulsory, then
Ashtottaree Dashaa System is applicable to nearly 25% of natives.
Astrologers may test this system. It should work in all parts of the world.
The fundamental rules of Jyotish are not restricted to any region or caste
or creed.
I have experimented with Vinshottaree in all its possible manifestations :
Sudarshan Chakra birth charts (16 Divisionals and their 16 Vinshottaree
tables from their respective lunar longitudes), 21 Arudhaapad charts of all
Divisionals, DACs (Dashaa Aarambh Chakra), Vinshottaree planets in five
levels of VPC (Varsh Pravesh Chakra), Kaarakaansh charts, etc etc.
My experience is that when both conditions of Ashtottaree are fulfilled, it
explains events better than Vinshottaree. In Vinshottaree Dashaa System,
either Dashaa Aarambh Chakra are needed or Sudarshan Chakra must be
used, but when Ashtottaree Dashaa System is applicable, it makes things
very very easy and there is no need to view so many charts.
If I add that SSS will give better results, some persons will take it as an
insult. Even if Drik is used, over 90% of Mahaa Dashaa timings will be
correct if birth time is nearly correct.

Chakra Dashaa

Kaal Dashaa and Chakra Dashaa are two independent Dashaa

systems and have nothing to do with Kaal Chakra Dashaa system.
Chakra Dashaa
[BPHS, Ch. 46, Sl. 50-51]

Chakra Dashaa is described in BPHS, Ch. 46, Sl. 50-51. It is a very easy to
calculate Dashaa (at least the Mahaa-Dashaa of it):
1. If the birth is at night, the Dashaa will commence from Lagna Raashi.
2. If the birth is during the day, the Dashaa will start from the Raashi, in
which the Lord of Lagna is placed.
3. If the birth is during Sandhyaa, the Dashaa will begin from the Raashi of
the second Bhaav.
The Dashaa of each Raashi is 10 years. As it is the Dashaa system of the 12
Raashi in the Zodiac, it has been named, as Chakra Dashaa.
'Sandhyaa' is the time span when Sun is ascending (we can track this
verifying if Sun is posited in the first Bhava in Chalit Chakra) or descending
(Sun in 7th Bhava in Chalit Chakra). The time span of Sandhyaa is 5
Ghatikaa or two hours.
This Dashaa isn't included in any software, nevertheless Paraashar
mentions in at a very early chapter in BPHS and therefore we can assume
that it is a very fundamental and important Dashaa - in fact he rejects all
other Raashi Dashaa systems ('not appropriate' ) except Varnad, Niryana
Shool and Chakra Dashaa (this includes most known and used 'Chara
Dashaa' as well!). He really denotes Chakra Dashaa as '*the* (!) Dashaa
system of the 12 Raashis in the Zodiac'! (Varnada and Niryana Shoola
Dashaa are 'AyurDashaas' indicating longevity, death or at least severe
problems.)
Each Raashi period of 10 years leads to a total sum of 120 years, the
maximum life span of human beings in Kali Yug, like in Vinshottaree Dashaa.
Lagna is related to night births, Lagna Lord to day births. This is logical
because planets are carrying activities with regard to the Raashi/Bhaav
they are lording, *they* are the active energies and principles. Sandhya is a
time of transition and transformation: The Sun is wandering from day into
night (from the upper half - the bright half of the day above the
Ascendant - into the lower half - the dark half of the day below the

ascendant). Starting Maha-dashaa for natives born during Sandhyaa time

are started from 2nd Bhaav/Lagna.
Note: This principle could be referred to two conditional Dashaas as well,
Shodashottaree Dashaa and Shat Trimsa Sama Dashaa. I do not use them even if applicable - when the native is born during Sandhyaa.

Interpretation: Due to Parashara's highest estimation of Chakra Dashaa it

must be a 'Phalit Dashaa', a Dashaa suitable and applicable for *all* themes
and topics.

Antar-Dashaa of Raashi
[BPHS, Ch. 51]

5. The Antar-dashaa of Raashi is worked out by dividing the Dashaa years

by 12. Pratyantar Dashaa of the Antar-dashaa are also calculated in the
same manner.
6. The Antar [Pratyantar] Dashaa will start from the Dashaa Raashi, or
from the Raashi 7th there from, whichever is stronger.
The Antar [Pratyantar] Dashaa are in the onwards order, if the Dashaa
Raashi is odd and in the reverse order, if it is even.
7-12. O Brahmin! Now I will acquaint you with the special characteristics of
the order of the Antar Dashaa of the Raashi.
If the Dashaa Raashi is a Movable one [Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn], the
Antar Dashaa of the 12 Raashi are in the onwards, or reverse order.
If the Dashaa Aashraya Raashi is a Fixed one [Taurus, Leo, Scorpio,
Aquarius], the Antar Dashaa will start from it and thereafter there will be
an Antar Dashaa of every sixth Raashi.
If the Dashaa Aashraya Raashi is a Dual one [Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius,
Pisces], the first Antar Dashaa will belong to it. Thereafter there will be
Antar Dashaa of Raashi in Kendra to it, Raashi in Kendra to the 5th from it
and Raashi in Kendra to the 9th from it.
In the case of all kinds of Raashi, namely Movable, Fixed, or Dual, the order
will be onwards, if the Dashaa Aashraya Raashi is an odd one and in the
reverse order, if it is an even one.

Calculation of Chakra Dashaa

(c) 2008 by Revati

Preliminary:
MD 10 years = 120 months / 12 Antar-Dashaa = 10 months/Antar-Dashaa
AD 10 months = 300 days / 12 Pratyantar Dashaa = 25 days/Pratyantar
Dashaa
PD 25 days / 12 Sookshm Dashaa = 2 days/Sookshm Dashaa
[days of a month:] Jan 31, Feb 28/29, Mar 31, Apr 30, May 31, Jun 30, Jul
31, Aug 31, Sep 30, Oct 31, Nov 30, Dec 31

How to Find Your Current Dashaa Period:

1. Look which of the three options apply to you: (a) nighttime birth, (b)
daytime birth, (c) birth during Sandhyaa (Sun within 15 distance from
Lagna cusp)
2. Identify your current Mahaa-dashaa period.
3. Identify your current Antar-Dashaa period and correct it with your
exact birth time (e.g. if you are born on an 18th of a month, you have to add
18 days to the provided table).
4. Identify your current Pratayantar Dashaa period and correct it with
your exact birth time.
Note 1: The start/end of Antar-dashaa/Pratyantar-dashaa periods can vary
one or two days.
Note 2: Entry chart casting is still difficult because exact entry periods are
missing.

Chara / Naaraayan Dashaa

Chara Kaarak

I won't work with Chara or Naaraayan Dashaa any more and I cannot
recommend it, but everybody has the liberty to draw his own and perhaps
different conclusions.

Chara or Naaraayan Dashaa

[BPHS, Ch. 46, 6-11]

O Brahmin! Some Maharishi have made a mention of Kaal and Chakra

Dashaa, but they have recognized the Kaal Chakra Dashaa, as supreme.
The other kinds of Dashaa, propagated by the sages, are Chara, Sthir,
Kendra, Kaarak, Brahm Graha, Mandook, Shool, Yogaardh, Drig, Trikon,
Raashi, Panch-swar, Yoginee, Pind, Naisargik, Asht-Varga, Sandhyaa,
Paachak, Taaraa etc. But in our view all these Dashaa are not appropriate.

[Note by Revati: Parashara states that all the 'other kind of Dashaa' (almost all Raashi
Dashaa!) - except Chakra and Varnad Dashaa - are not 'appropriate' in his view.
Nevertheless he explains them in chapter 46.]
[Jaimini Sutras, Adhyaaya 1, Pad 1]

SU. 25. In all odd signs the counting must be in the right direction.
SU. 26. In even signs the counting must be in the reverse order.
SU. 27. In some places or signs this does not apply.
SU. 28. Many of the writers are of opinion, that the Raashi Dashaa
(period of the sign) extends over such number of years which are counted
from the Raashi to the place where its Lord is located.
SU. 34. Divide Raashi Dashaas by 12 and distribute the same to the 12
Raashi in proportion to the Raashi Dashaa periods to get its sub-periods.
The counting should be from right to left if Lagna is odd sign and vice
versa if even.

Calculation of Raashi Dashaa/ 9th from Lagna: commencing from

odd or from even signs
[Jaimini Sutras, Adhyaaya 2, Pad 3]

SU. 28. If the 9th from Lagna happens to be incorporated in an odd sign,
take the Raashi Dashaa in the regular order. If it happens to be
incorporated in an even sign, take the Raashi Dashaa in the inverse order
or backwards. The commencement of the Dashaa should be from the
Lagna. Ketu in these cases is considered as a benefic.

Dwaar Raashi (Paka Raashi): Raashi, which

commences Dashaa
[Jaimini Sutras, Adhyaaya 2, Pad 4]

SU. 2. The Raashi which commences the Dashaa or period is called the
Dwaar Raashi or the door for the subsequent Raashi Dashaa.
[Note by Translator - This Dashaa is called also Paka Raashi.]

Bhog Raashi: Counting signs from Lagna to Dwaar Raashi

SU. 3. Count as many signs from Dwaar Raashi as Dwaar Raashi is removed
from Lagna. This will be the Bhog Raashi.
Results of Dashaa to be told, dependant on planetary strength
SU. 6. The results in these Dashaa will have to be foretold, by the

strength of the planets and by the sources of strength and weakness of

the Paka and Bhog Raashi.
Predicting of the Stronger of Lagna or the 7th, males and females
SU. 7. These results have to be carefully predicted from Lagna or the
7th, whichever is the stronger of the two. For males preference should
be given to Lagna and for females the 7th should be preferred provided
it is strong.
Dashaa commences with movable sign: regular order
SU. 8. If the Dashaa commences with a movable sign or Chandra Raashi,
then the order of the Raashi Dashaas will be regular in a horoscope.
Dashaa commences with fixed sign: successive order
SU. 9. If the Dashaa commences in the fixed sign or Sthir Raashi, then
the 6th and 7th, etc., from it will be the successive Dashaa.
Dashaa commences with common (dual) sign: order is Kendra-PanapharAapoklim
SU. 10. If the Dashaa Raashi commences in a common sign, then the
successive Raashi Dashaa will be determined by the Kendra, Panaphar and
Aapoklim Raashi from it.
Planets in Kendra, Panaphar and Aapoklim become Lords of Navaansh
Dashaa
SU. 11. Those who are in Kendra, Panaphar and Aapoklim from the Kaarak
become the lords of the Navaansh Dashaa.
Raashi in Kendra from Lagna furnish first Dashaa
SU. 12. Those Raashi which are in Kendra from Lagna furnish the first
Dashaa.
Kaarak will be moving between Lagna and the 7th
SU. 13. The Kaarak will be moving between the Lagna and the 7th.
Results depending on strengths and weaknesses of Dashaa Planets
SU. 14. The results of all these will be determined, as detailed in the
previous sutras, by the examination of the sources of strength and
weakness to the planets, to the lords of the Dashaa and to the Raashi.
Results from Kaarak and from 1st/3rd/7th and 9th Raashi
SU. 26. Results must be predicted from the Kaarak or lords of events and

also from the 1st, 3rd, 7th and the 9th Raashi.
Kaarak occupies odd sign: regular Dashaa; occupies even sign: backwards
SU. 31. If the Kaarak occupies the odd sign, then proceed for the
subsequent Dashaa in the regular way, but when he is in an even sign, then
go backwards for the Raashi Dashaa.
Kaarak occupies even sign: backwards
SU. 32. If the Kaarak Raashi falls in even signs, then count backwards.
Same Results for Antar-Dashaa, forward or backwards counting
SU. 34. These details above mentioned in the various sutras should also
be ascribed to the Antar-Dashaa or sub-periods among the major Dashaa
in the forward and backward counting.
Raashi, Yuti with or aspected by Benefics, or its Lord with strength
SU. 35. If the Raashi has beneficial aspects and conjunctions, or if its
lord has similar sources of strength or is exalted, then all the results will
be beneficial.

Chara Dashaa
[BPHS, CH. 46, Sl. 158 - 167]

158-166. Now I will tell you about the working out of the Dashaa years of
Vrishchik and Kumbh. If both the Lords of the two Raashi, Vrishchik and
Kumbh, are placed in their own Raashi, their Dashaa will be of 12 years.
Otherwise the Dashaa will be of the number of years, indicated by the
number, counted from that Raashi to the Raashi, occupied by its Lord. If
one Graha be in his own Raashi and the other in any other Raashi, the
Dashaa will be of the number of years counted, from the above first
Raashi to the other. If the Lords are in different Raashi, the counting is
to be done up to the Raashi, which is stronger.
The Raashi, which has a Graha, placed in it, is considered more powerful
than the Raashi without a Graha in it. If both are with Grahas in them,
the one with more Graha would be considered more powerful. If both
Raashi are occupied by an equal number of Grahas, the strength of the
Raashi itself should be taken into account.
The principle for considering the Bal (strength) of the Raashi is, that the
Fixed Raashi is considered stronger than the Movable one and the Dual
Raashi is considered more powerful than the Fixed Raashi. If there is

equality in the strength of the Raashi, then to determine the number of

years of Dasha counting should be done up to the Raashi with bigger
number.
If one Raashi is occupied by a Graha in exaltation, the counting should be
done up to that Raashi only. In addition 1 should be added in the number
of years in the case of a Raashi with an exalted Graha and 1 should be
deducted from the number of years in the case of a Raashi with a Graha
in debilitation. The prediction should be made after calculating the
Dashaa in this manner.
167. If the Raashi in Dharma Bhaav is in an odd Pada, the counting should
be from the Raashi in the Lagna onwards. The counting would be in the
reverse order, if the Pad is even. The Dashaas of Raashi have to be fixed,
keeping this in view.
For Example. In the above Tulaa is the Raashi in Dharm Bhaav in an odd
Pad. Amongst the Lords of Lagna, Shani and Raahu, Raahu is associated
with a Graha. Therefore Raahu is more powerful than Shani. Therefore
counting should be done up to Raahu. Kumbh is in even Pada, therefore
counting has to be done from Kumbh up to Raahu in the reverse order, by
which the Chara Dashaa for Kumbh would come to 8 years. Mesh is in odd
Pad. Therefore the Chara Dashaa for Mesh will be one year. The Dashaa
of other Raashi should be calculated in the same manner.

Chara / Naaraayan Dashaa

(c) 2008 by Revati

Chara - or nowadays Naaraayan Dashaa - belongs to the most used Dashaa

systems after Vinshottaree Dashaa. It is a Raashi Dashaa, therefore
Raashi, their Ansh and planets in them are of utmost importance.
There are a multitude of calculation possibilities for calculating correct
Chara Dashaa sequence, the two most appreciated methods are
'Paraashar method' (as described in BPHS) and 'Naaraayan' Dashaa
(based on Jaimini Sutras), which is elaboration of Sanjay Rath, SJC
astrologer. It is interesting to note that obviously Paraashar himself did
not have a good opinion with regard to almost all Raashi Dashaas (except
Chakra and Varnada Dashaa), he taught that they all are 'not appropriate'
in his view. Nevertheless, the logics behind Chara Dashaa construction see next paragraph - seems to be convincing and deserves closer studies.

In my view Naaraayan Dashaa can be neglected and Chakra and Varnada

Dashaa (together with Mool Dashaa and Nakshatra Dashaas) use is highly
preferable. Another important point is that Antar-dashaas and
Pratyantar-dashaas of Naaraayan/ Chara Dashaa are not in accordance
with the calculation rules given in BPHS.
*The true Chara Dashaa is: Chakra Dashaa.*

Mahaa-Dashaa Sequence:
Chara Dashaa is based on the idea of a particular relationship among a
Raashi/ Bhaav and his planetary Lord.
The calculation of Mahaa-dashaa years for a particular planet depends on
the "distance of a Raashi/ Bhaav Lord to his own Bhaav": If this distance,
for example, is 4 Raashi/Bhaav (eg Saturn in Taurus, four Raashi / Bhaav
away from his own Raashi/Bhaav Aquarius) then the Mahaa Dashaa (of
Saturn) period would extend over 4 years. Same procedure for all other
planets also - this idea is the fundamental of Chara and Naaraayan
Dashaa, and there are some exceptions to it which I won't describe here.
As said, correct calculation of Chara Dashaa is subject of vivid
discussions among astrologers.
First Maha Dashaa starts from the 1st or 7th Bhaav, whichever is
stronger. Odd signs are counted regularly, even signs are counted
backwards. For movable signs, the Dashaa sequence goes in normal
direction from 1st or 7th Bhaav (1st MD period) to 2nd or 8th Bhava (2nd
MD period) to 3rd or 9th Bhava (3rd MD period) and so on. For dual signs
the direction is backwards: first MD 1st Bhava, second MD is 12th Bhaav,
third MD is 11th Bhaav and so on. For fixed signs, every 6th Raashi counted backwards from Lagna or 7th Bhaav - leads to a new Mahaa
Dashaa period (or - seen from normal direction - every 8th Bhaav).
Rule for fixed signs given in Jaimini Sutras (every 6th Raashi) does not
apply for Chara Dashaa as described by Paraashar (and rejected by him).

Antar-Dashaa Sequence:
Maha Dashaa is subdivided into twelve parts, Antar-dashaa sequence
starts with Maha-Dashaa Raashi or Bhaav, as usual.

Interpretation:
Naaraayan Dashaa is part of Jaimini astrology, which is very different

from Paraashar's but a good supplement to it.

Naaraayan Dashaa can be seen as a progression of your Lagna. It shows
changes in your environment, your surroundings and your outer world. It is
a Dashaa of material manifestation - of all kinds - as well.
Parashara was looking at the reality, the 'Satya' of ourselves and the
world, Jaimini strongly emphasized Arudhaa and Chara Kaarak.
Arudhaa do not indicate the reality but the illusion, the 'Maayaa' in our
world and of ourselves - they are like a 'fata morgana' in a desert, a
mirror with an illusory view. They show when and how we are perceived by
other people and the results thereof - therefore Arudhaa are closely
connected with material manifestations as well. Arudhaa Lagna is one of
the most important horoscope factors.

Chara Kaarak
Aatm Kaarak, Amaatya Kaarak, Bhraatri Kaarak, Maatri Kaarak, Putra
Kaarak, Gnati Kaarak and Dara Kaarak - indicate wishes and desires of the
eternal Soul which are to be fulfilled in our life/present incarnation.
Aatm Kaarak - denotes the main wish of our eternal Soul to be reached,
Amaatya Kaarak - how we can reach this, the other Chara Kaarak are
related to the Bhaav 3 - 7. As Chara Kaaraks are related to goals and aims
they are deeply connected to our Dharma, indicating it in our natal chart.
The best way of using Chara/ Naaraayan Dashaa, is analyzing current
period from Arudhaa Lagna and Chara Kaarak. After this normal style of
interpretation - as explained in Mool Dashaa article - can be done, but
this is only of secondarily importance and can be neglected in my view.
Entry Charts of Mahaa-Dashaa, Antar-Dashaa and Pratyantar Dashaa
periods are significant as always and normally reliable because Chara or
Naaraayan Dashaa - as a Raashi Dashaa - is not that time-sensitive as
Nakshatra Dashaa.
We can take the five fundamental planetary connections as explained in
Phala Deepika:
(1) When they occupy mutually each other's sign.
(2) When they are conjoined.
(3) When there is mutual aspect between them.
(4) When they are in Kendra position with respect to each other.

(5) When they are in Trikon position with reference to each other.
(Phala Deepika by Mantreswara, Ch. 15, Sl. 30)

and apply them on positions

- MD Raashi as Lagna for this period, AD Raashi counted therefrom (same
for AD - PD sequence),
- from Arudhaa Lagna,
- from Bhaav Arudhaa (A2, A3, A4...), for particular themes,
- from Graha Arudha (Arudhaa of Sun, Moon, Lagna Lord, etc.),
- from Aatm-, Amaatya Kaarak and all other Chara Kaarak (according to
their meanings).

Most important:
- MD Raashi as Lagna for this period, AD Raashi counted there from
(same for AD - PD sequence),
- placement counted from Moon
- placement counted from Arudhaa Lagna
- placement counted from Aatm Kaarak
If Lagna or Sun are endowed with more strength, they can become more
significant than Moon (according to Moola Dashaa construction rule).
Fine-tuning with placements counted from other Chara Kaarak, Lagna Lord
or Kaarak, Special Lagna (especially Hora and Ghatee Lagna), Bhaav and
Graha Arudhaa.
Remember:
When two planets have the same longitude (e.g. 10 in one or two
Raashi), 8 Chara Kaarak Scheme must be taken over, else 7 Chara Kaarak
Scheme is advisable. Regarding Arudhaa exception rules, they are valid
and must be applied.
Final Note:
Some astrologers calculate Naaraayan Dashaa for each Varg chart, for
example for Navaansh or Drekkan. This takes a single Varg chart as an
independent chart - independent from natal chart. As Varg Charts are
only parts (Ansh) within a particular Raashi I do not support this idea
and it is not necessary to do so. All information necessary for astrological
life comes from different Dashaa systems, applied on planets in Raashi
and their various Ansh, Nakshatra and the various planetary connections.

Conditional Dashaa
Shodashottaree Dashaaa
[BPHS, CH. 46]

23. It will be advisable to adopt the Shodashottaree, if the birth is in the

day in Krishn Paksha (dark half of the month), or at night in Shukla Paksha
(bright half).
24-26. The Dashaaa may be adopted, when the Lagna is in the Horaa of
Chandra with birth in the Krishna Paksha, or, when Lagna is in the Hora of
Soorya with birth in the Shukla Paksh.
Count the number of Nakshatra from Pushya to the Janma Nakshatra.
Divide this number by 8. The remainder will indicate the Dashaa of Soorya,
Mangal, Guru, Shani, Ketu, Chandra, Budh and Shukra. The Dashaa of the
above Graha are of 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 years.

Shat-trinshat Sama Dashaa

42-43. Count from Shravan to the Janma Nakshatra and divide the number
by 8. The remainder 1 etc. will indicate the Dashaa Lords, whose order will
be, as follows: Chandra, Soorya, Guru, Mangal, Budh, Shani, Shukra and
Raahu. Their Dashaa will be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 years. If the birth is
during the day and Lagna is in the Hora of Soorya and, if the birth is at
night and Lagna is in the Horaa of Chandra, adoption of this system would
be preferable.

Ashtottaree Dashaa
17-20. Maharishi Parashara said. O Brahmin, the sages have recommended
the adoption of Ashtottaree, when Raahu not being in Lagna, in any other
Kendra, or Trikon to the Lord of the Lagna. From 4 Nakshatra from Ardra
commences the Dashaa of Soorya, from 3 after that begins the Dashaa of
Chandra, 4 after that will bring the Dashaa of Mangal, 3 after that the
Lord of Dashaa will be Budh, 4 therefrom will have Shani, as the Dashaa
Lord, 3 thereafter the Lord will be Guru, Raahu will be the Lord of the
Dashaa 4 Nakshatra after that and then Shukra will take over the lordship
of the Dashaa 3 Nakshatra from the last one mentioned above. The Lord of
the Dashaa at birth will be determined by counting in this order up to the
Janma Nakshatra. The duration of Ashtottaree Dashaa for Soorya,
Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Shani, Guru, Raahu and Shukra are 6, 15, 8, 17, 10,
19, 12 and 21 years in that order. Thus in this Dashaa system only 8 Graha
play the role of Dashaa Lords, Ketu having been denied this privilege.
21-22. The Dashaa of the various Graha have been specified above. In the
case of malefic Graha the Dashaa span of one Nakshatra is 1/4 of the
Dashaa of the Graha. It is 1/3 in the case of Benefic. Thus the expired
portion of the Dashaa is calculated, according to the method, followed for
Vinshottari Dashaa, by multiplying the Bhayat, i.e. the expired period of the

stay of Chandra in the Janma Nakshatra, by the Dashaa portion of the

Janma Nakshatra and dividing it by Bhabhog, i.e. the total period of the
stay of Chandra in the Janma Nakshatra. Then the balance of Dashaa at
birth can also be ascertained. If U-Aashaadhaa happens to be the Janma
Nakshatra, the duration of its first three Pad is taken, as Bhabhog and the
Dashaa calculations should be done accordingly. The Dashaa and calculations
for Abhijeet Nakshatra are done by taking the 4th Pada of U-Aashaadhaa
plus the 15th part of the beginning of Shravan Nakshatra. For Shravan the
Bhabhog would be the total of its duration in Ghatikaa minus the 1/15th
part of the beginning of Shravan.

Conditional Dashaa : Shodashottaree Dashaa, ShatTrinsha-Sama Dashaa, Ashtottaree Dashaa

Conditional Dashaa are highly sub-estimated in astrological interpretations.
Like Vinshottaree Dashaa they are based on Nakshatra positions, therefore
these must be the key to correct interpretation of these Dashaa systems.
If they were not important - why Parashara would have mentioned them?
Conditional Dashaa are to be interpreted the same way as Vinshottaree
Dashaa - but it is important to understand that under which condition a
Dashaa is applicable - this is the key to understanding a Dashaa cycle. And
the origin of it - each Conditional Dashaa is based on a specific Nakshatra may be a key of understanding as well.
If you cannot track an event in your life with Vinshottaree Dashaa, you
surely will find it in a Conditional Dashaa. It is wrong to neglect them - as
they are based on very special conditions, *these conditions are the key for
real Dashaa period comprehension*.
At least one Conditional Dashaa is always applicable: Shat-Trinsh Sama
Dashaa or Shodashottaree Dashaa.

The Luminaries: The Sun and The Moon

SUN
- Mool Trikon and own Raashi Leo, Nakshatra : Krittikaa, U-Phaalgunee, UAashaadhaa
- the central (all other planets/topics evolving around it), strong sense of
own individuality
- the eternal Soul (on a higher level), the ego (on a lower level)
- leadership, dominance, power, authority
- aristocratic, proud, vain, pride, demand respect, egocentrism and egoism,

high standards
- active, energetic, working (but prefers to let others work for himself)
- father
- Raashi are solar based
MOON
- Mool Trikon Taurus, own Raashi Cancer, Nakshatra: Rohinee, Hast,
Shravan

- receptive, passive
- material wealth (Taurus is Mool Trikon)
- home, own country, nearest surroundings
- beauty, popularity, masses
- mother, caring, nurturing, devoted
- Nakshatra are lunar based
TITHI are based on the distance of Moon from the Sun, therefore they
integrate both significations.
SHUKLA PAKSHA - the bright half of the month, between New and Full
Moon - is generally lorded by the Sun and Benefic are strong,
KRISHN PAKSHA - the dark half of the month, between Full and New Moon
- is generally lorded by Moon and Malefic are strong (Moon itself becomes
Malefic). Timings are generally better for Shukla Paksha period because
Benefic are strengthened during this time span, best timing are 2nd, 4th,
6th, 8th and 9th Tithi in Shukla Paksha.
HORAA are based on the division of a Raashi by 2. In odd signs the first
half of the Raashi belongs to the Sun and the second half to the Moon; in
even signs this sequence is reverse (first half is Moon's Hora, second half
is Sun's Hora).

Final Note: When a native is born during Sandhya I use Shat Trinsh Sama
Dashaa very cautiously (when Sun is close to Lagna or 7th Bhaav cusp
(within 12) I do not use this conditional Dasa). 'Sandhyaa' is the time span
when Sun is ascending (we can track this verifying if Sun is posited in the
first Bhaav in Chalit Chakra) or descending (Sun in 7th Bhaav in Chalit
Chakra). The time span of Sandhyaa is 5 Ghatikaa or two hours.

Note: When a native is born during Sandhyaa I use Shodashottaree Dashaa
very cautiously (when Sun is close to Lagna or 7th Bhaav cusp (within 12)
I do not use this conditional Dashaa). 'Sandhyaa' is the time span when
Sun is ascending (we can track this verifying if Sun is posited in the first

Dwadashottari Dashaa
(27-28) This Dashaa system will be appropriate for one, whose Lagna is in
the NavAnsh of Shukra. Count from Janma Nakshatra to Revatee. Divide
this number by 8. The remainder will indicate the Dashaa of the Graha
concerned. The Dashaa order is Soorya, Guru, Ketu, Budh, Raahu, Mangal,
Shani, Chandra. The Dashaa will be of 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 years of
the Graha.

Panchottaree Dashaa
(29-30) This Dashaa is considered suitable for those, whose Lagna is Karka
and also in the Karka DvaDashaAnsh. Count from Anuradha up to the Janma
Nakshatra and divide the number by 7. The remainder will indicate the
Dashaa. The order of the Dashaa Lords is Soorya, Budh, Shani, Mangal,
Shukra, Chandra and Guru. The Dashaa of the Graha are 12, 13, 14, 15, 16,
17 and 18 years.

Shataabdikaa Dashaa
(31-32) This Dashaa system has been considered appropriate, if Lagna is
Vargottam. This happens, when Lagna in the Raashi Kundalee and the
Navaansh Lagna are in the same Raashi.
(33-34) Count from Revatee Nakshatra to the Janma Nakshatra and divide
this number by seven. The remainder will indicate the Lords of Dashaa in
this order: Soorya, Chandra, Shukra, Budh, Guru, Mangal and Shani. Their
Dashaa will be of 5, 5, 10, 10, 20, 20 and 30 years.

Chatu-Raashiti-Sama Dashaa
35-36. Chatu-Raashiti-Sama Dashaa is considered appropriate in cases,
where the Karm's Lord is placed in Karm. Count from Swaati to the Janma
Nakshatra and divide this number by 7. The remainder will indicate the
Dashaa Lords in the following order: Soorya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru,
Shukra and Shani. The Dashaa period of each Graha is 12 years.

Dwisaptati-Sama Dashaa
37-39. This Dashaa system is considered suitable in cases, where the Lord
of Lagna is in Lagna, or in Yuvatee Bhaav. Count from Mool to the Janma
Nakshatra and divide the number by 8. The remainder will determine the

Dashaa Lord in the following order: Soorya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru,
Shukra, Shani and Raahu. In this Dashaa system all the eight Graha have
Dashaa of 9 years each.

Shastihayaanee Dashaa
40-41. This Dashaa may be adopted in cases, where Soorya is posited in
Lagna. The order of Dashaa Lords in this system is, as follows:
Guru, Soorya, Mangal, Chandra, Budh, Shukra, Shani and Raahu.
The following shows the Nakshatra, falling under the various Dashaa Lords.
The Dashaaa of Guru, Soorya and Mangal are of 10 years. The remaining
Graha have Dashaa of 6 years each:
Guru Dashaa - (Ashwinee, Bharanee, Krittikaa, Punarvasu),
Soorya Dashaa - (Rohinee, Mrigashiraa, Aardraa, U-Aashaadhaa),
Mangal Dashaa - (Pushya, Aashleshaa, Maghaa, Revatee),
Chandra Dashaa - (P-Phaalgunee, U-Phaalgunee, Hast),
Budh Dashaa - (Swaati, Vishaakhaa, Anuraadhaa),
Shukra Dashaa - (Jyeshthaa, Mool, P-Aashaadhaa),
Shani Dashaa - (Abhijeet, Shravan, Dhanishthaa),
Raahu Dashaa - (Shatabhishaa, P-Bhadraa, U-Bhadraa).

Sudarshan Chakra Dashaa

[BPHS, Ch. 47]

1-3. Maharishi Paraashar said to Maitreya. O Brahmin! Now I will impart to

you the knowledge of a great secrecy and superior importance, which was
communicated to me by Brahmaa himself for the benefit of the world. This
is a Chakra by the name of Sudarshan, through which Devagya will be able
to predict the favorable and unfavorable results for every year, every
month and every day from the time of birth to the time of death of a
person. Listen to this very intently.
4. O Brahmin! Take a point and from it draw three circles. Within the
circles draw 12 lines, so as to provide 12 Bhaav within each circle. This is
how Sudarshan Chakra is drawn.
5-6. In the first circle (innermost) place the 12 Bhaav from Lagna with
Graha, posited there. In the circle next to the innermost circle place the
12 Bhaavs from the Raashi of Chandra with the Graha in them. In the third
circle place the 12 Bhaav from the Raashi of Soorya with Graha in them.
Thus there will be 3 Raashi in each Bhaav of the Chakra.
7-9. The significant aspect of this Chakra is, that Lagna, Chandra and
Surya represent the first Bhaav. The 2nd, 3rd etc. up to 12th from

Chandra and Soorya ill deal with the same subject, as they do, when
reckoned from Lagna. Then the results should be assessed, according to
the Grahas in each Bhaav. In this form of Raashi Kundalee, Soorya is
considered auspicious in the first Bhaav and inauspicious, or Malefic in
other Bhaav. The Malefic do not produce evil effects, if they are in their
exaltation Raashi. In this manner predictions should be made, after
considering the Benefic and Malefic natures of the Graha, their disposition
and aspects from and on them.
10. A Bhaav gets advancement, if it is occupied, or aspected by the Lord, or
a benefic. The Bhaav, which is occupied, or aspected by a Malefic, is
harmed.
11-13. The effects of a Bhaav will be in accordance with the Graha
occupying it, or in accordance with the Graha aspected, if no Grah is in
occupation of the Bhaav. The effects of a Bhaav, occupied by a benefic, will
be auspicious and the Bhaav, occupied by a malefic, will be inauspicious.
Effects of the aspects will be the same. If a Bhaav is influenced both by
Benefics and Malefics, the results will depend on the majority amongst the
benefic and malefic. If the number of benefic is larger than the number of
malefics, the results will be auspicious. If reverse is the case, inauspicious,
or evil effects may be expected. If there are equal number of Malefics and
Benefics, those with greater strength will influence the results of that
Bhaav. Mixed results should be declared, if there be no difference in the
strength of Malefics and Benefics. The same would apply to aspects.
14. The effects should be declared, according to its Lord, if the Bhaav is
neither occupied, nor aspected by a Graha.
15-16. A natural Benefic loses his benevolence, if he is in more Malefic
Varg. Similarly a natural Malefic loses his malevolence, if he is in more
Benefic Varg (Sapt Varg). A Graha's own Raashi, his exaltation Raashi and
benefic Varg are considered auspicious. And malefic and the Varg of an
enemy and debilitated Raashi are considered inauspicious.
17. The sage said, that the results should be declared only after assessing
the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of all the Bhaavs.
18. Maitreya asked. O Venerable sage! Kindly enlighten me on one point. If
all the Bhaav are judged in accordance with the Sudarshan Chakra, why
many learned sages have advocated declaration of effects from the Bhaav,
reckoned from Lagna in Raashi Kundalee?

19-20. The sage replied. The results should be declared in accordance with
the Sudarshan Chakra, only when Soorya and Chandra being in separate
Raashi different from the Raashi of Lagna. If amongst Lagna, Soorya and
Chandra, all the three, or two of them are in the same Raashi, the judgment
of effects should be made from the Raashi Kundalee only.
(21-23) The sage said. O Braahman! Now I will tell you about the effects,
produced every year and every month by the twelve Bhaav in their Dashaa
and Antar-Dashaa, according to Sudarshan Chakra. Under this system
every one of the twelve Bhaav, beginning from the 1st, is allotted a Dashaa
period of one year. Thus every year in 12 years a Bhaav becomes Lagna of
the year and the remaining become 2nd, 3rd and so on. Every year every
Bhaav will have Antar-Dashaa of one month. By following the method of
Lagna of the year here also, there will be a Lagna of the month. The first
Antar-Dashaa will be of the first Bhaav and then will follow for 12 months
the Antar-Dashaa of the other Bhaav, every Bhaav assuming the role of
Lagna by turn. Every Bhaav gets Pratyantar Dashaa of 2 1/2 days and ViDashaa of 12 1/2 Ghatikaa. The same method is to be adopted for judging
the effects of Bhaav in Pratyantar Dashaa and Vi-Dashaa.
24-26. At the time of commencement of a Dashaa, if there be benefic in
the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 5th, 99th and 8th Houses, favorable effects will be
experienced in the concerned year, month etc. The Bhaav, which is occupied
by only Raahu, or Ketu, becomes harmful. The same will be the fate of the
Bhaav, which is occupied by a larger number of Malefics. If there be
Benefics in Bhaav other than the 12th, or 6th, the Bhaav concerned will
produce favorable effects. In other words, if the Benefics be in the 12th,
or 6th Houses from the Bhaav concerned, unfavorable effects will be
derived in the related year, month etc. If there be Malefics in the 3rd, 6th
and 11th from the Bhaav, assuming the role of Lagna, then these three
Bhaav will produce auspicious results. The effects can be ascertained for
every year, month etc. in this manner. The total number of years in
Vinshottaree Dashaa are 120 years. After every 12 years the same method
of determining the Dashaa, Antar-Dashaa etc. has to be repeated for Lagna
and other Bhaav.
Note from Revati: "At the time of commencement of a Dashaa" refers to
the entry chart of the period (Dashaa Pravesh Chart), which exactly means
the annual Taajak chart. Narasimha Rao writes: "In short, Taajak annual,
monthly and sixty-hour charts are nothing but the entry charts of Dashaa,
Antar-Dashaa and Pratyantar Dashaa as per Sudarshan Chakra Dashaa."

27-28. After ascertaining the effects of the years, months etc in

accordance with the Sudarshan Chakra, assessment of effects for the
years, months etc. should be made on the basis of Ashtak Varg. The
benefic, or malefic effects will be full, if the assessment from both
produces the same results. If they are different, the comparative strength
of both should be taken into account to declare the final results.

Conditional Dashaa: Dwaadashottaree, Panchottaree,

Shataabdikaa, Chaturaseeti Sama, Dwisaptati Sama,
Shastihayani and Sudarshan Chakra
(c) 2008 by Revati

Dwaadashottaree Dashaa
Condition:
- Lagna is in a NavAnsh of Venus (Taurus or Libra NavAnsh)
- thus highlighting the importance of Venus/Taurus/ Libra in chart
Significant Nakshatra:
- Revati (counting from Janma Nakshatra to Revatee)
- thus highlighting the importance of Revatee (Mercury Nakshatra, Venus is
exalted in Revatee)
NAVAANSH
NavAnshs are identical with Nakshatra Padas, which divide a lunar mansion
(Nakshatra) into four equal parts. Therefore they have a particular
relationship with the Nakshatra they divide and are generally related to
the Bhaav Karaka of the 9th Bhaav, Jupiter.
All indications from 9th Bhaav can be derived from Graha's placements in
NavAnshs: Dharma (life goals, life purpose), fortunes, growth in life,
success, potential, hidden forces and strengths (of Grahas), unconscious
disposition and direction of the mind (with regard to one's own Dharma,
potential, which normally is more unconscious than conscious), spirituality
and religiosity, philosophy of life.
Note: 'spouse' as described in BPHS is part of Dharma - it is no
coincidence to whom we get married. A marriage with another individuality
always indicates the need of integrating new sides and developing new
character traits, therefore developing one's one potential.
Navaansh certainly is the most important Varga to be used - it is absolutely
necessary looking into the D-9 Anshs of grahas. It has almost the same
importance as the main chart, D-1, Raashi Chakra.

A planet posited in a particular Ansh of D-9 (Navaansh) hints at our future

and points at the direction of the planet in which he wants to go. It is a
traffic sign indicating us the direction where to go - and this for each
single planet, regarding his natural and functional significations.
A planet placed in the same Raashi in D-1 and D-9 is called 'Vargottam' and
is comparable with a Graha in Svasth Avasthaa - very strong, confident and
happy. Extending this rule, all planets in same Raashi (or even exalted) in D1 and a particular Varg are endowed with strengths and quality with regard
to the topic of this Varg.
REVATEE NAKSHATRA (Lorded by Mercury, in Pisces Raashi)
- star of accomplishing, completion, fulfillment and finishing
- solar energy of Jupiter/Neptune and lunar energy of Mercury are
emerging (and energy of NavAnsh Raashi)
- detachedness and wisdom, distance to all worldly matters

transcendence
- finishing a great cycle, preparing a new one
VENUS
- Venus Nakshatra : Bharanee, P-Phaalgunee, P-Aashaadhaa
- relationships generally, contacts in society, marriage
- communication of feelings, seeking for balance, harmony and justice
- activities related to wish fulfillment in outer world and society, charisma
- strong sense for forms, poetry, soft-spokenness
- liking for taste, refinement and grace, devotional to their beloved
- 'cruel or insensitive to those outside of their circle of association' (DF)
- holy deeds, celebrations
- material wealth and prosperity
- acquiring accumulating luxury and comforts, possessive

Venus spreads this energy in zodiac.
It is exaltation of Saturn and Mool Trikon of Venus.
Nakshatra posited in Libra: Chitraa (1/2), Swaati, Vishaakhaa (3/4)
Their lords - specifying Libra's energies - are: Mars, Raahu, Jupiter
Spica at 0 Libra defines the 7th Raashi of the zodiac, in opposition
to the first Raashi Aries.
TAURUS

feelings, stable, persevering, traditional,
conservative, liking for beauty and form, comfort and luxury, inflexible,
obstinate, opinionated, worldly and materially oriented, establishing family
or own social group, deep belonging to this
Primarily Moon spreads this energy in zodiac, secondarily Venus (if posited
in Taurus or fully aspecting it).
Moon is exalted in Taurus and his Mool Trikon is here as well. Raahu is
exalted in Taurus.
Nakshatra posited in Taurus: Krittikaa (3/4), Rohinee, Mrigashiraa (1/2)
Their lords - specifying Taurus' energies - are: Sun, Moon, Mars

Panchottaree Dashaa

oneself and others (mind, feelings, emotions) after intellectual and
superficial Gemini
resulting in: openness, plainness, friendly, dedicative, devoted, emotional,
sensitive, intuitive, passive in outer relations (outside own home and family),
striving for popularity, timid, insecure, open to mass trends
Moon spreads this energy in zodiac.
Probably Neptune is exalted in Cancer. Jupiter definitely is exalted in
Cancer.
Nakshatra posited in Cancer: Punarvasu (1/4), Pushya, Aashleshaa Their
lords - specifying Cancer's' energies - are: Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury
Upagraha Indrachapa and Upaketu are supposed to have their own Raashi in
Cancer.

Sudarshan Chakra Dashaaa

Condition:
- Sun and Moon in separate Raashi, different from Lagna Raashi
- therefore: Sun, Moon, Lagna - all in (three) different Raashi
Sudarshan Chakra Dashaa shows the annual progression of Lagna, Moon,
Sun at the rate of one sign/ year - each year Lagna, Moon, Sun are stepping
one sign forward in zodiac. It is only applicable when all three fundamental
factors (Lagna, Moon, Sun) are in three different Raashi; when applicable,
normal Dashaa interpretation rules are to be applied (Mahaa-Dashaaa
Raashi as Lagna, Antar Dashaa Raashi counted there from, use of entry
charts). BPHS provides all necessary information (see above).

Kaal Dashaa
Note: Kaal and Chakra Dashaa are two independent Dashaa systems
and have nothing to do with Kaal Chakra Dashaa.
Kaal Dashaa
[BPHS, Ch. 46, Sl. 44-49]

5 Ghatikaa before the sight of the semi-disk of the setting Soorya and 5
Ghatikaa after that and 5 Ghatikaa before and after the rising of Soorya,
that is 10 Ghatikaa in the evening and 10 Ghatikaa in the morning,
respectively. The total period of both these Sandhyaa (twilight) is said to
be 20 Ghatikaa.

The 20 Ghatikaa of the night have been given the name Poorn and the 20
Ghatikaa of the day have been given the name Mugdha. The Sandhyaa at
the time of sunrise is called Khand and the Sandhyaa at the time of sunset
is said to be Sudhaa. Both of these Sandhyaa are of 10 Ghatikaa each.
If the birth is in Poorn, or Mugdha, its past Ghatikaa should be multiplied
by 2 and the product should be divided by 15. The figure so arrived at
should be converted into years, months etc. By multiplying it by the serial
number of Soorya and other Graha in their normal order, we will get the
Kaal Dashaa of these Graha.
If the birth is during Sandhyaa, then its past Ghatikaa should be multiplied
by 4 and the product divided by 15. The figure so arrived at in terms of
years, months etc. should be multiplied by the serial number of Soorya and
the other Grahaa to get the Kaal Dashaa of all the nine Grahaa.

Ghatikaa are equivalent to 5 x 24 min = 2 hours.

day = 24 hours = 60 Ghatikaa = 3600 Vighatikaa
hour = 60 minutes = 2.5 Ghatikaa = 150 Vighatikaa
minute = 60 seconds = 2.5 Vighatikaa
Ghatikaa = 24 minutes
Vighatikaa = 24 seconds

Chakra Dashaa
[BPHS, Ch. 46, Sl. 50-51]

If the birth is at night, the Dashaa will commence from Lagna Raashi.
If the birth is during the day, the Dashaa will start from the Raashi, in
which the Lord of Lagna is placed.
Sandhyaa is the time span when Sun is ascending (we can track this
verifying if Sun is posited in the first Bhaav in Chalit Chakra) or descending
(Sun in 7th Bhaav in Chalit Chakra). The time span of Sandhyaa is 5
Ghatikaa or two hours.
This Dashaa isn't included in any software, nevertheless Paraashar
mentions in at a very early chapter in BPHS and therefore we can assume
that it is a very fundamental and important Dashaa - in fact he rejects all
other Raashi Dashaa systems ('not appropriate') except Varnad, Niryana
Shool and Chakra Dashaa (this includes most known and used 'Chara

Dashaa' as well!). He really denotes Chakra Dashaa as '*the* (!) Dashaa

system of the 12 Raashi in the Zodiac'! (Varnad and Niraayan Shool Dashaa
are 'Aayur-Dashaa' indicating longevity, death or at least severe problems.)
Each Raashi period of 10 years leads to a total sum of 120 years, the
maximum life span of human beings in Kali Yug, like in Vinshottaree Dashaa.
Lagna is related to night births, Lagna Lord to day births. This is logical
because planets are carrying activities with regard to the Raashi/Bhaav
they are lording, they are the active energies and principles. Sandhyaa is a
time of transition and transformation: The Sun is wandering from day into
night (from the upper half - the bright half of the day above the
Ascendant - into the lower half - the dark half of the day below the
ascendant). Starting Maha-Dashaas for natives born during Sandhyaa time
are started from 2nd Bhaav/Lagna.
Note: This principle could be referred to two conditional Dashaas as well,
Shodashottaree Dashaa and Shat Trinsh Sama Dashaa. I do not use them even if applicable - when the native is born during Sandhyaa.
Interpretation: Due to Paraashara's highest estimation of Chakra Dashaa it
must be a 'Phalit Dashaa', a Dashaa suitable and applicable for all themes
and topics.

Kaal Chakra Dashaa

All three Dashaa have in common that they are 'natural' Dashaa in a way,
very fundamental Dashaa. They are 'background planetary cycles', framing
all other Dashaa - especially Mool, Vinshottaree, Kaal Chakra and
Conditional Dashaa - in a way.
Kaal Dashaa
Kaal Mahaa Dashaa cycle is tracking the natural sequence of planets we
know from the week days sequence:
Sunday - The Sun (1st Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Monday - Moon (2nd Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Tuesday - Mars (3rd Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Wednesday - Mercury (4th Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Thursday - Jupiter (5th Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Friday - Venus (6th Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Saturday - Saturn (7th Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Raahu (8th Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)
Ketu (9th Kaal Mahaa Dashaa)

Antar-Dashaa in Kaal Mahaa Dashaa - as usual - start with the Mahaa

Dashaa Lord and then continue the normal given sequence. After a full
sequence of all planets the Mahaa Dashaa cycle starts again (with The Sun).
Interpretation: Kaal Dashaa shows the natural progress of time and
planetary energies in your life - it is the energetic background (Mool is the
root, the fundament). Therefore Kaal Dashaa is an important Dashaa - it is
tracking the natural sequence of time in your life, therefore it provides the
background, the framing of it.

Look primarily at the natural significations of planets in Kaal Dashaa and

only secondarily at the placement of the Dashaa Lords in Raashi (with its
Ansh) and Bhaav. Another planetary period cycle (e.g. Mool or Vinshottaree
Dashaa) coinciding with Kaal Dashaa period increases the probability of
events related to this particular period with all its significations.

Kaal Chakra Dashaa

Note: Kaal and Chakra Dashaa are two independent Dashaa systems
and have nothing to do with Kaal Chakra Dashaa.
This is another diagnostic tool for astrologers. Kaal Chakra Dashaa to be
applied if the Moon's Navaansh Lord is strong. (Kaal Chakra
Dasagneyam Chandraanshese Balanvite). In other cases Udu Dasa can be
applied. (Sada Nakshatra Margena Dashaa balavatee smritah). This tool is
followed by some experts. When the Moon's Navaansh Lord is more
powerful this Dashaa should be applied intoto to get the correct prognosis.
[BPHS, Ch. 46]

52-53. Maharshi Paraashar said - "O Brahmin! Now, after making obedience
to Lord Shiva, I shall describe the Kaal Chakra Dashaa. Whatever was
related by Lord Shiva to Goddess Paarvatee, is being explained by me for
the use of sages to be utilized for the welfare of the people.
54-55. By drawing vertical and horizontal lines, prepare 2 Kundalees, Savya
and Apsavya, of 12 apartments (Koshthas) each. From the second Koshtha
in each Kundali fix the Raashis Mesh, Vrishabh, Mithun, Kark, Sinh, Kanyaa,
Tulaa, Vrischik, Dhanu, Makar, Kumbh, Meen. Then Nakshatra may be
incorporated in the manner, indicated hereafter. These Kundalees,
indicative of the 12 Raashis, are called Kaal Chakra.
56-58. Write Ashwinee, Bharanee and Krittikaa in the Savya Chakra and
Rohinee, Mrigashiraa, Aardraa in the Apsavya Cgakra. Then incorporate the
three following Nakshatra - Punarvasu, Pushya and Aslesha in the Savya and

Maghaa, P-phaalgunee and U-phaalgunee in the Apsavya. Then incorporate

the three following Nakshatra, Hast, Chitraa and Swaati in the Savya
Chakra and Vishaakhaa, Anuraadhaa and Jyeshthaa in the Apasavya Chakra.
Then incorporate Mool, P-Aashaadhaa and U-Aashaadhaa in the Savya
Chakra and Shravan, Dhanishthaa and Shatabhishaa in the Apsavya Chakra.
Finally incorporate the last three Nakshatra - P-Bhaadrapad, U-Bhaadrapad
and Revatee in the Savya Chakra. Now there will be 15 Nakshatra in the
Savya Chakra and 12 Nakshatra in the Apasavya Chakra, (because for the
12 Raashi there are 12 Pad of 3 Nakshatra, the Navaansh). The Pad of
Ashwinee, Punarvasu, Hast, Mool, P-Bhadrapada, Krittikaa, Aashleshaa,
Swaati, U-Aashaadhaa and Revatee of the Savya should be reckoned in the
same manner, as the Pad of Ashwinee.
59. Now I shall describe in detail, how the Deha and Jeeva should be
reckoned in the Pad (quarters) of the Nakshatra.

Sequence of Mahaa Dashaa in Kaal Chakra Dashaa

[Ashwinee, Punarvasu, Hast, Mool, P-Bhaadrapad, Krittikaa, Aashleshaa,
Swaati, U-Aashaadhaa, Revatee]
60. In the first Pad of Ashwinee, Mesh is indicative of Deha (body) and
Dhanu is indicative of Jeev (life). And the Lords of Mesh, Vrishabh, Mithun,
Kark, Sinh, Kanyaa, Tulaa, Vrishchik and Dhanu are Lords of the Dashaa in
the order, as described before.
61. In the second Pad of Ashwinee, Makar is Deha and Mithun is Jeev and
the Lords of the 9 Raashis - from Makar to Mithun are Lords of the
Dashaa.
62. In the third Pad of the 10 Nakshatra, beginning from Ashwinee,
Vrishabh is Deha and Mithun is Jeev. The Lords of the Raashis Vrishabh,
Mesh, Meen, Kumbh, Makar, Dhanu, Mesh, Vrishabh and Mithun are Lords
of the Dashaa in that order.
63-64. For the 4th Pad of the 10 Nakshatra, beginning from Ashwinee,
Kark is Deha and Meen is Jeev and the Lords of the 9 Raashis from Kark to
Meen are the Lords of Dash as.
[Bharanee, Pushya, Chitraa, P-Aashadha, U-Bhaadrapad]
65. In the four Pad of the 5 Nakshatra, Bharanee, Pushya, Chitraa, PAashaadhaa and U-Bhaadrapad, Deha and Jeeva are the same, as for
Bharanee.

66. In the first Pad of Bharanee, Vrishik is Deha and Meen is Jeev and the
Lords of the Raashi Vrishchik, Tulaa, Kanyaa, Kark, Sinh, Mithun, Vrishabh,
Mesh and Meen are the Lords of Dashaa in this order.
67. In the 2nd Pad of Bharanee, Kumbh is Deha and Kanyaa is Jeev and the
Lords of Kumbh, Makar, Dhanu, Mesh, Vrishabh, Mithun, Kark, Sinh and
Kanyaa are the Lords of Dashaa in that order.
68. In the 3rd Pad of Bharanee, Tulaa is Deha and Kanyaa is Jeev and Lords
of the Raashi Tulaa, Vrishchik, Dhanu, Makar, Kumbh, Meen, Vrishchik,
Tulaa and Kanyaa are the Dashaa Lords in this order.
69. In the 4th Pad of Bharanee, Kark is Deha and Kumbh is Jeeva and the
Lords of the Raashi Kark, Sinh, Mithun, Vrishabh, Mesh, Meen, Kumbh,
Makar and Dhanu are the Dasha Lords in this order.
[Rohinee, Maghaa, Vishaakhaa, Shravan]
71-72. O Brahmin! I have thus given you the description of Savya Chakra.
Now I shall give the description of Apsavya Chakra. Prepare a similar chart
of 12 apartments and from the 2nd apartment onwards place the Raashi
from Vrishchik onwards in the reverse order. In this chart Deha and Jeev
would be the same for Rohinee, Maghaa, Vishaakhaa and Shravan, as for
Rohinee.
73-76. In the first Pad of Rohinee, Karka is Deh and Dhanu is Jeev. The
Lords of the Raashi Dhanu, Makar, Kumbh, Meen, Mesh, Vrishabh, Mithun,
Sinh and Tulaa will be the Dashaa Lords in this order.
In the 2nd Pad of Rohinee, Tulaa will be Deha and Kanyaa the Jeev and the
Lords of the Raashi Kanyaa, Tulaa, Vrishik, Meen, Kumbh, Makar, Dhanu,
Vrishchik and Vrishchik will be the Dashaa Lords.
In the 3rd Pad of Rohinee Kumbh will be Deha and Kanya Jeeva. The Lords
of the Raashi Kanyaa, Sinh, Kark, Mithun, Vrishabh, Mesh, Dhanu, Makar
and Kumbh will be the Dashaa Lords. In the 4th Vrishchik will be Deha and
Meen Jeev and the Lords of the Raashi Meen, Mesh, Vrishabh, Mithun,
Sinh, Kark, Kanyaa, Tulaa and Vrishik will be the Lords.
[Mrigashiraa, Aardraa, P-Phaalgunee, U-Phaalgunee, Anuraadhaa, Jyesthaa,
Dhanisthaa, Shatabhishaa]
77. In the 4 Pad of the Apasavya Nakshatra, Mrigashiraa, Aardra, PPhaalgunee, U-Phaalgunee, Anuraadhaa, Jyeshthaa, Dhanishthaa and

Shatabhishaa the Deha and Jeev and the Dashaa Lords will be the same, as
for Mrigashiraa.
78-81. In the first Pad of Mrigashiraa Kark is Deha and Meen is Jeev and
the Lords of the Raashi Meen, Kumbh, Makar, Dhanu, Vrishchik, Tulaa,
Kanyaa, Sinh and Kark will be the Dashaa Lords in this order.
In the 2nd Pad of Mrigshiraa, Vrishabh is Deha and Mithun is Jeev and the
Lords of the Raashi Mithun, Vrishabh, Mesh, Dhanu, Makar, Kumbh, Meen,
Mesh and Vrishabh will be the Dashaa Lords.
In the 3rd Pad of Mrigshiraa, Makar is Deha and Mithun is Jeev and the
Lords of the Raashi Mithun, Sinh, Kark, Kanyaa, Tulaa, Vrishchik, Meen,
Kumbh and Makar will be the Dashaa Lords.
In the 4th Pad of Mrigshiraa, Mesh will be Deha and Dhanu Jeev and the
Lords of the Raashi Dhanu, Vrishik, Tulaa, Kanyaa, Sinh, Kark, Mithun,
Vrishabh and Mesh will be the Dashaa Lords.
82. Maharishi Paraashar said. O Braahman! The description of the Deha and
Jeeva of the Pad of the Apasavya Nakshatra and the Dashaa Lords is the
same, as narrated by Lord Mahaadev to Goddess Paarvatee.

Spans of Dashaa Periods

83. Maitreya said. O Venerable Maharishi Parashara! Now please guide me
about the Dashaa spans of the Dashaa Lords, described by you. Please also
demonstrate, how the commencement of the Dashaa, its expired and the
remaining periods at the birth are to be calculated.
84. Maharishi Parashara said. 5, 21, 7, 9, 10, 16 and 4 years are the Dashaa
spans of Soorya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra and Shani.

Dashaa Commencing from Nakshatra Pad

85-86. The span of life of a person is determined from the Pad Ansh) of
the Nakshatra at the time of birth, or the time of query and the years
allotted to the 9 Raashi, commencing from it (the Pad of the Nakshatra).
Some sages are of the view, that the person will enjoy full span of life
(Poorn Aayu), if his birth is at the commencement of any Pad, will have
middle span of life (Madhya Aayu), if the birth is in the middle of the Pad
and short span of life (Alpa Aaayu), or will face death-like sufferings, if
the birth is at the end of the Pad of the Nakshatra.

Calculation of Dashaa
87-88. According to this principle, we should be acquainted with the Pad of
the Nakshatra. Now I shall tell you, how the calculations are made,
according to the proportion of the Pad of a Nakshatra. The number of
Ashwinee etc, whichever may be the past Nakshatra, should be divided by
3. Thereafter the remainder should be multiplied by 4. To the figure so
made available the Pada of the present Nakshatra should be added. The
product will be the Navaansh from Mesh onwards.
89. The number of years (Poorn Aayu) are, as under. For the Amsa in Mesh
100 years, in Vrishabh 85 years, in Mithun 83 years, in Kark 86 years. The
number of years will be the same for Raashi, situated the 5th and 9th to
them.
90-91. Multiply the past Ghatikaa, Pal etc. of the Pad of the Nakshatra, in
which a person is born, by the existing Dashaa years and divide it by 15.
The result will indicate the expired period of the Dashaa in years, months
etc. By deducting it from the total number of years allotted, we get the
balance of Dashaa at birth. The Dashaa should be taken, as commencing
from that Raashi.
92. Multiply the past Ghatikaa, Pal etc. of the present Pad of the
Nakshatra by the number of years and divide the product by the fourth
part of Bhabhog. The years etc. so obtained may then be deducted from
the total Dashaa period. The result will be the balance of Dashaa at birth in
years, months etc.
93. The past Kalaa (minutes) of the Navaansh, in which Chandra may be
placed, should be multiplied by the years, allotted to the Dashaa and the
product should be divided by 200. The resulting years etc. will be the
expired portion of the Dashaa. By deducting them from the total number of
years the balance of the Dashaa at birth is obtained.

Deha and Jeev for Savya and Apasavya Chakra

94-95. In the Savya Chakra the first Ansh is called Deha and the last Jeev.
The opposite is the case in the Apasavya Chakra. Therefore the
calculations should be based on the Deha etc in the Savya Chakra and on
the Jeev etc. in Apasavya Chakra.

Gati of Raashi in the Kaal Chakra

96-98. There are three kinds of movements (Gati) of the Raashi in the Kaal
Chakra, namely Mandukee, Markatee and Sinhaavalokan.

The movement of one Raashi by jumping over one Raashi is known, as

Mandukee Gati.
Backward movement to the previous Raashi is called Markatee Gati.
The movement of a Raashi to the 5th and 9th Raashi is said to be
Sinhaavalokan.
99-100. Movement from Kanyaa to Kark and from Sinh to Mithun is
Mandukee Gati.
Movement from Sinh to Kark is Markatee Gati.
Movement from Meen to Vrishchik and from Dhanu to Mesh is called
Sinhaavalokan Gati.
Note by Revati:
Effects of these Gati are described in Shlok 101-119; Shlok 120-146
describe effects of Dashaa periods in various Ansh, whole chapter 49 of
BPHS as well.

Kaal Chakra Dashaa

[Phal Deepikaa, Ch. 22]

1. (A) Three Nakshatra from Ashwinee, viz. Ashwinee, Bharanee and

Krittikaa comprise of 12 quarters. Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer are the
four Navaansh of Ashwinee. Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio will be the four
Navaansh of Bharanee. Sagittarius Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces will be
the four Navaansh of Krittikaa. In this order (Apasavya or Apradakhina
order) divide the three Nakshatra by the 12 Navaanshs.
(B) There will be 12 Navaansh of three Nakshatra from Rohinee viz,
Rohinee, Mrigashiraa and Aardraa counting them in reverse order from
Scorpio i.e. Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, Leo, Cancer, Gemini, Taurus, Aries, Pisces,
Aquarius, Capricorn and Sagittarius, divide them by the 12 Navaansh.
Scorpio will be the Navaansh of the first quarter of Rohinee, Libra will be
the Navaansh of 2nd quarter of Rohinee and so on ultimately finding that in
this order Sagittarius will be the Navaansh of the fourth quarter of
Aridraa. (This is known as Savya-reverse, A-Pradakshina or anticlockwise
order).
2. These are the trends of Nakshatra reckoned in their order (from
Ashwinee) to be distinguished as Apasavya and Savya. The years assigned
to a planet constitute the Dashaa period of the sign owned by that planet.
This is the peculiarity in the Kaal Chakra system, say the wise.
3. The Sun's Dashaa period is 5 years (Leo is the sign owned by the Sun,
therefore Dashaa period of Leo will be 5 years).

The Dashaa period of the Moon is 21 years (the Dashaa of Cancer owned by
the Moon will be the same).
The Dashaa of Mars will be of 7 years (the Dashaa of Aries and Scorpio will
be the same).
The Dashaa of Mercury will be 9 years (the Dashaa period of Gemini and
Virgo owned by Mercury will be the same).
The Dashaa of Jupiter will be 10 years (the Dashaa of Sagittarius and
Pisces owned by Jupiter will be the same).
The Dashaa of Venus will be of 16 years (the Dashaa period of Taurus and
Libra owned by Venus will be the same).
The Dashaa of Saturn will be of 4 years (the Dashaa period of Capricorn
and Aquarius owned by Saturn will be the same).
The effects of Kaal Chakra Dashaa are to be declared on the basis of the
sign whose Dashaa be in progress and its Lord.
4. In this Kaal Chakra system consisting of Dashaa, Antar-Dashaa, etc, I
shall now expound the formula for the several Nakshatra Pad from
Ashwinee onwards. Every such formula consists of nine syllables indicating
by their number (as per Katapayadi memories) the particular Rasyapaharas
composing the Dashaa of the Nakshatra Pad under consideration and
consequently by total life period appertaining thereto by means of the
years allotted to the several owners of the signs.

Described an order of Dashaa for the 4 Pad of Ashwinee, Bharanee,

Rohinee and Mrigshiraa, there are in all 27 Nakshatra. For the remaining 23
Nakshatra (each has four Pad) the order of their Dashaa will be the same
as for the above four Nakshatra as explained below:
(a) The order of the Dashaa of the four Pad of Krittikaa, Punarvasu,
Aashleshaa, Hast, Swaati, Mool, U-Aashaadhaa, P-Bhadraa and Revatee will
be the same as for Ashwinee.
(b) The order of the Dashaa of the four Pad of Pushya, Chitraa, PAashaadhaa, U-Bhadra will be the same as for Bharanee.
(c) The order of the Dashaa of the four Pad of Maghaa, Vishaakhaa and
Shravan will be the same as for Rohinee.
(d) The order of the Dashaa of the four Pad of Aardraa, P-Phaalgunee, UPhaalgunee, Anuraadhaa, Jyesthaa, Dhanishthaa and Shatabhishaa will be
the same as for Mrigashiraa.

1st Mahaa Dashaa

10. The initial Mahaa Dashaa of a life belongs to the Lord of the sign owning
the Nakshatra Pad occupied by the Moon at the time of birth, being so
much of the sign Mahaa Dashaa as corresponds to the Ghatikaa that yet
remain of the Nakshatra Pad and the order of Mahaa Dashaa follows the
natural order of the Nakshatra Pad reckoned from the aforesaid one. This
is the opinion, say the sages, held by some learned in Astrology.
Note by Revati:
According to Mantreswara, the first Maha Dashaa of Kaal Chakra Dashaa is
directly started from the Navaansh in which Moon is posited and its Lord.

11. There are number of formulas each composed of a number of mnemonic

syllables, referring to the several nakshatra Pad beginning with the first
Pad of Ashwinee and giving signs in a certain order. It is with reference to
the order of sign in these formulas that the Raashi Mahaa Dashaa of which
a life is to consist should be determined. The Vaakya Kram, men of one
school say, should be adhered to.
12. In the order of sign Vaakya Kram, the function at the end of Cancer,
Scorpio and Pisces give rise to (1) Mandook Gati, (2) Ashwa or Turag Gati

and (3) Sinhaavalokan respectively and the Dashaa of those intervals cause
woeful effects.
13. The sub-period of any of the planets constituting a Mahaa Dashaa is
thus obtained. Find out the mnemonic syllable (out of the nine syllables)
composing a formula whose sub-period is wanted and find out the owner of
the sign signified by that syllable. Multiply the number of years assigned to
this planet by the number of years fixed for the planet whose Mahaa
Dashaa is under consideration and divide the product by the total of years
constituting the entire Ayus of the formula chakra. The quotient in years
etc., will represent the sub-period required.
14. The total number of years indicated by the Sun of nine mnemonical
syllables of any formula represent the number in years of Param Aayus for
that formula. Thus the Param Aayus in years for the 12 Raashi Amsas
reckoned from Aries in an Apasavya Chakra will be 100, 85, 83, 86 repeated
thrice while those for the 12 Raashi Amsas reckoned from Scorpio in a
Savya Chakra will be the same but in the reverse order, that is 86, 83, 85
and 100 repeated thrice.
30. Kaal Chakra Dashaa system has to be resorted to only when the lord of
the Navaamsa occupied by the Moon is strong. The Dashaa calculation as
per nakshatra method is always considered as the best.

Kaal Chakra Dashaa

Kaal Chakra Dashaa is based on the Navaansh in natal chart in which the
Moon is placed in and follows very special and complicated rules. It is a very
complexly calculated Dashaaa with a very particular sequence of Mahaa
Dashaas and Antar-Dashaas (main and sub planetary periods.) There is
discussion about the correct calculation of Kaal Chakra Dashaa, and JHora
offers six options to use - but only one is correct.
Kaal Chakra is the 'wheel of time'. It is part of the three most important
Dashaas - Mool, Vimshottaree and Kaal Chakra Dashaa - and very time
sensitive: One minute in birth time variation results in three months in
Mahaa Dashaa cycle! This means, only 20 seconds variation in birth time
results in one month in MD cycle, 5 seconds in one week. Therefore Kaal
Chakra Dashaa is very suited for final birth time rectification.
Note: Next important Dashaa are Conditional Dashaa (and one CD is always
applicable!) , Naaraayan or Chara Dashaa and Kaal Dashaa. Varnad and

Niraayan Shool Dashaa are Aayur-Dashaa, related to longevity in general

and endings/problems of all kinds in particular.
Use
Kaal Chakra Dashaa - as based on Navaansh - is closely connected to 9th
Bhaav themes. It is the Dashaa of our Dharm, our life purpose and goals we
have to achieve. It points at new experiences we have to make in order to
fulfill our Dharma. This way it shows chances and problems, opportunities
and obstacles.
Kaal Chakra Dashaa shows the evolution of our Self, our personality and
individuality and the development of our hidden potential due to our
Dharma. It shows evolution of your hidden potential and experiences
enabling it, the development of your personality - it shows opportunities
and fortunes, but dangers and problems as well, - you have to look at first
in your D-9 chart, then in your D-1 to make correct predictions.
Kaal Chakra Dashaa - a highly reliable Dashaa - in fact indicates nothing but
the evolution of your Dharma in this incarnation! See next paragraph for
more indications of 9th Bhaav, Navaansh and resulting thereof for Kaal
Chakra Dashaa.
D-9 Navaansh
A Navaamsh of a Rashi comprises of 320', Navaamsh Varg follows a
regular mapping to signs throughout the whole zodiac.
Navaansh are identical with Nakshatra Pad, which divide a lunar mansion
(Nakshatra) into four equal parts. Therefore they have a particular
relationship with the Nakshatra they divide and are generally related to
the Bhaav Kaarak of the 9th Bhaava, Jupiter.
All indications from 9th Bhaav can be derived from Graha's placements in
Navaansh: Dharm (life goals, life purpose), fortunes, growth in life, success,
potential, hidden forces and strengths (of Graha), unconscious disposition
and direction of the mind (with regard to one's own Dharm, potential, which
normally is more unconscious than conscious), spirituality and religiosity,
philosophy of life.
A planet posited in a particular Amsa of D-9 (Nav-ansh) hints at our future
and points at the direction of the planet in which he wants to go. It is a
traffic sign indicating us the direction where to go - and this for each
single planet, regarding his natural and functional significations.

A planet placed in the same Raashi in D-1 and D-9 is called Vargottam and is
comparable with a Graha in Swasth Avasthaa - very strong, confident and
happy. Extending this rule, all planets in same Raashis (or even exalted) in
D-1 and a particular Varg are endowed with strengths and quality with
regard to the topic of this Varg.

Introduction to Kaal Chakra Dashaa

Kaal Chakra Dashaa is based on Nakshatra Pad/Navaansh. Each Navaansh is
linked with a very particular sequence of Raashis in Kaal Chakra Dashaa
(KCD). In Kaal Chakra Dasa, Nakshatra are divided into two types or
'cycles': Savya and Apasavya. The sequence of Savya and Apasavya cycle
occurs in the normal counting of the Nakshatra throughout the zodiac, with
the sequence 3 Savya Nakshatra - 3 Apasavya Nakshatra - 3 Savya
Nakshatra - 3 Apasavya Nakshatra - 3 Savya Nakshatra - 3 Apasavya
Nakshatra - 3 Savya Nakshatra.
Savya I: Ashwinee, Bharanee, Krittikaa
Apasavya II: Rohinee, Mrigshiraa, Aardraa
Savya II: Punarvasu, Pushya, Aashleshaa
Apasavya III: Maghaa, PPhaalgunee, U-Phaalgunee
Savya III: Hast, Chitraa, Swaati
Apasavya III: Vishaakhaa, Anuraadhaa, Jyesthaa
Savya IV: Moola, P-Aashaadhaa, U-Ashaadhaa
Apasavya IV: Shravan, Dhanisthaa, Shatabhishaa
Savya V: P-Bhaadrapadaa, U-Bhadrapadaa, Revatee
The first Dashaa period in KCD is called 'Deha' (body) in Savya cycle and
'Jiva' (life) in Savya cycle.
The last Dashaa period in KCD is called 'Jiva' (life) in Savya cycle and
'Deha' (body) in Apasavya cycle.
Reference and starting point of KCD is the Moon Nakshatra and Nakshatra
Pad/Navaansh in your Natal chart.
Calculation and Sequence of Maha-dashaas
There are four different Mahaa Dashaa cycles in KCD:

(Note: In Sl. 69 in BPHS Parashara gives Aquarius as Jeev for Bharanee 4th Pad, but in
the following Dashaa sequence Sagittarius - and not Aquarius - is Jeev. Following the
sequence Sagittarius must be the the correct one.)

Dashaa Sequence: Lords of Sagittarius (Jeev), Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, Leo,
Cancer, Gemini, Taurus, Aries (Deha)
We see lot of irregular Dashaa periods, changing the directions of periods
and jumping signs back forward and backward. These jumps are called
'Ghatees', movements of Pad. Each movement has its signification and will
be explained later on.
Mahaa Dashaa Spans:
Sun (Leo): 5 years

Moon (Cancer): 21 years

Mars (Aries, Scorpio): 7 years
Mercury (Virgo, Gemini): 9 years
Jupiter (Sagittarius, Pisces): 10 years
Venus (Libra, Taurus): 16 years
Saturn (Aquarius, Capricorn): 4 years
Regarding Mool Trikon as the respectively roots of planetary energies, this
table gets slightly modified:
Leo (Sun): 5 years
Taurus, Cancer (Moon, Venus) : 21 years
Aries, Scorpio (Mars, Ketu): 7 years
Virgo, Gemini (Mercury, Raahu): 9 years
Sagittarius, Pisces (Jupiter, Ketu): 10 years
Libra, Taurus (Venus, Moon): 16 years
Aquarius, Capricorn (Saturn, Raahu): 4 years
Calculation of the first Mahaa Dashaa Period
BPHS seems to be misunderstood, Mantreswara explains it in clear words:
The first (initial) Mahaa Dashaa of Kaal Chakra Dashaa starts with the sign
where the Moon is posited in. With other words: "The Navaansh Sign of the
natal Moon" is the very first Mahaa Dashaa Period.
This proves: Calculation method Ranghacharya (in JHora) is the only
correct one.
[Phal Deepikaa by Mantreswara, Sloka 10)

The initial Mahaa Dashaa of a period (a native's life) belongs to the lord of
the sign owning the Nakshatra Pad occupied by the Moon at the time of
birth, being so much of the sign Mahaa Dashaa as corresponds to the
Ghatikaa that yet remain of the Nakshatra Pad and the order of Mahaa
Dashaa follows the natural order of the Nakshatra Pad reckoned from the
aforesaid one. This is the opinion, say the sages, held by some learned in
Astrology.
Calculation and Sequence of Antar-Dashaa
Antar-Dashaas of Mahaa Dashaa follows the same sequence as given above
for Mahaa Dashaa, with all its irregularities.
This means: Antar-Dashaa in KCD does not start with Mahaa Dashaa Lord
(as in all other Nakshatra Dashaa, called 'Udu Dashaa') but with the
particular Lord/ Navaansh Sign as explained above. I will post related

effects ofAntar-Dasa periods in BPHS, there you'll see each Antar-Dashaa

sequence for each Mahaa Dashaa.
BPHS in Ch. 46, 49, 50 and 65 gives examples of correct Antar-Dashaa
cycle for each Mahaa Dashaa (and each Mahaa Dashaa has another AntarDashaa cycle!), which proves that Antar-Dashaas in Kaal Chakra Dasa do
*not* start with Mahaa Dashaa Lord, as generally usual in Dashaa.
BPHS, Ch. 46, 49 (especially this one!), 50, 65, Effects of Aquarius/Kumbh
Dashaa
'In Kumbh in the Dashaa of
... Vrishabh Ansh there will be financial gains,
Mesh - diseases of the eyes,
Meen - journeys to distant places,
Kumbh - increase in wealth,
Makar - success in all kinds of ventures,
Dhanu - more enemies,
Mesh - loss of happiness and enjoyment,
Vrishabh - death,
Mithun - well being.
Dashaa of Kumbh Ansh.
Shukra - many kinds of educational attainments, gains of property,
happiness from wife and children, sound health and increase in wealth.
... Mangal - fevers, danger from fire and from enemies, distress from
enemies and mental agony.
... Shani - danger of troubles from wind, bile and phlegm, quarrels, foreign
journey, danger of suffering from tuberculosis.
... Guru - freedom from ill health, happiness, honors from the king and joy.
... Budh - happiness from wife, children and wealth, joy, increase in good
fortune.
Kumbh Ansh
Vrishabh - increase in wealth,
Mesh - eye troubles,
Meen - travels to distant lands,
Kumbh - increase in wealth,
Makar - success in all ventures,
Dhanu - increase in knowledge and learning,
Mesh - loss of happiness,
Vrishabh - danger of death,
Mithun - gains of property, happiness.'

Therefore, taking Aquarius (Kumbh) as an example, "the only correct

sequence of AD for Aquarius/ Kumbh MD" can be:
[Aquarius/Kumbh MD:] Taurus/Vrishabh - Aries/Mesh - Pisces/Meen Aquarius/Kumbh - Capricorn/Makar - Sagittarius/Dhanu - Aries/Mesh
(Sinhaavalokan Gati, 'lion's leap', and change of direction to forward!) Taurus/Vrishabh - Gemini/Mithun

Interpretation of Kaal Chakra Dashaa

There are two ways of interpreting Kaal Chakra Dashaa:
1. The normal way you analyze Graha in Raashi Ansh.
2. The particular way of Kaal Chakra, including the concept of Deha/Jeev
and the three Gati (leaps) possible in Antar-Dashaa. This approach will be
explained in the following paragraphs.
Interpreting the KCD in the standard way, we have to include in our
interpretation:
- the Dashaa Navaansh (D-9) (equal to a Nakshatra Pad) of a MD / AD / PD
Period: Sign, Graha in it, Graha in Kendra and Trikon to it, Raashi Drishti to
it, Lord of the Sign with planets in it
- the Nakshatra where this Navaansh is placed in
- the Raashi where this Nakshatra is placed in natal chart (D-1), placements
of Graha in Varg
- the 'divisions' of the Navaansh: Bhaansh (D-27), Nava-Navaansh (D-81)
and Akshaved-Ansh (D-45) with planets in them
- the Horaa and Drekkan the Navaansh is placed in Bhaansh (106'40")
divide a Navaansh (320') by 3, Akshavedaansh (040') by 5 and NavaNavaansh (022'22") by 9 (they are a real subdivision of Navaansh).
For Very Beginners:
Mahaa Dashaa (MD) are the main planetary periods, divided by sub-periods
called Antar-Dashaa (AD). Sub-periods are divided by sub-sub-periods
called Pratyantar Dashaa (PD), which are subdivided by sub-sub-sub-periods
called Sookshm Sashaa (SD), which can be further subdivided into Praan
Dashaa (PrD).
General Dashaa Analysis Structure
1. Natural significations of the Dashaa Lord
2. Functional significations of the Dashaa Lord (lordship over Bhaava(s),
Dashaa Lord as Chara Kaarak)
3. Attributes and qualities of the Nakshatra the current Dashaa Lords are
posited in (MD, AD, PD Nakshatra)

4. Attributes and qualities of the Raashi/Bhaav where this Nakshatra is

posited in, and Drishtis on it
5. Attributes and qualities of the Nakshatra which this planet rules
6. Attributes and qualities Ansh of the Nakshatra/Raashi where this
Nakshatra is placed in (MD, AD, PD Lord in Varg)
7. Strengths (Shad Bal, Vinshopak Bal) and Avasthaa of the Dashaa Lords
(MD, AD, PD)
- and 8. Position of Antar-Dashaa Lord with regard to Mahaa Dashaa Lord, of
Pratyantar Dashaa Lord with regard to Antar-Dashaa Lord, of Sookshm
Dashaa Lord with regard to Pratyantar Dashaa Lord: the Dashaa Lord of
the higher level is to be seen as Lagna for the subsequent sub-period)
9. Position of Dashaa Lord to various references: Moon, Lagna, Arudhaa
Lagna, Sun, Horaa Lagna, Ghatee Lagna and (perhaps) Bhaav Lagna
Bhaav are structured in
Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th house),
Trikon (1st, 5th, 9th house),
Dusthan (6th, 8th, 12th house),
Upachaya (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th house) and
Maarak (2nd, 7th house).
Trikon are the houses of Lakshmee, of fortune and provide more auspicious
periods.
Kendra are the houses of Vishnu, of sustaining, the backbone of our
horoscope and our life and provide normally auspicious periods (but not as
auspicious at the best houses, Trikon, in a chart).
Dusthaan are Shiv's domain, providing lot of problems and obstacles in our
life.
Upachaya are houses of development, therefore indicating some life
struggle and need for development, therefore providing problems and
challenges as well.
Maarak are "houses of death" and can lead to endings.
Look, what kind of lordship a Dashaa Planet obtains: Is he Lord of a Trikon
(Lakshmee) House - then it is auspicious.
Is he Lord of a Dusthaan, or Upachaya - then more difficult. (To repeat
this, there are of course lot of exceptions due to very individual
constellations in a chart!)

This is to be done from various references: MD/AD/PD Lord, Moon, Lagna,

Arudhaa Lagna are the most important references, then Sun, Horaa Lagna,
Ghatee Lagna and Bhaav/Graha Arudhaa.
For Kaal Chakra Dashaa, the first look must go to D-9 - Navaansh with its
'divisions', Bhaansh (D-27), Akshavedaansh (D-45) and Nava-Navaansh (D81). Dwadashaansh-Navaansh (D-108) probably has some importance as well.
Special Analysis of Kaal Chakra Dashaa
Narasinh Rao's software 'JHora' provides the Nakshatra names of each
Mahaa-, Antar-, Pratyantar Dashaa - therefore we get to know which
Nakshatra and Navaansh (Nakshatra Pad) are activated.
Example of a Kaal Chakra Dashaa Cycle:
Kaal Chakra Dashaa (Moon, Savya group, Paramaayush = 85 years):
Mahaa Dashaa: Le (Chitraa 1) MD: 2036-09-16 (6:12:29) - 2041-09-16
(12:57:46)
Antar-Dashaa in this MD: Scorpio (Maghaa 1) AD: 2036-09-16 (6:12:29) 2037-01-19 (17:14:20)
(1st) Pratyantar Dashaa in this AD: Sagittarius (Jyeshthaa 4): 2036-09-16
(6:12:29) - 2036-10-01 (5:11:47)
Mahaa Dashaa activates Chitraa Nakshatra, First Pad/Navaansh.
Attributes and significations of this Nakshatra and sign of Pad/Navaansh
are significant, the next look must go to the Raashi/Bhaav where this
Nakshatra/Navaansh is posited and all interpretations steps given above
are to be done now.
Same applies for the sub-periods of the main planetary period:
Antar-Dashaa activates Maghaa Nakshatra, 1st Pad/Navaansh;
Pratyantar Dashaa activates Jyesthaa Nakshatra, 4th Pad/Navaansh.

Deh and Jeev

'In the Savya Chakra the first Ansh is called Deha and the last Ansh is
called Jeev. The opposite is the case in the Apsavya Chakra.' (BPHS). This
means the last Dashaa period in KCD is called 'Jeev' (life) in Savya cycle
and 'Deha' (body) in Apasavya cycle.
Explanation:
Deha means 'body' and Jeev means life or spirit. The Raashi becoming Deha
is closely related to our body and obtains therefore Lagna qualities, the

Raashi becoming Jeev is related to our mind and obtains therefore Moon
qualities.
Sub-periods (Antar-Dashaa, Pratyantar Dashaa, Sooksm Dashaa) and
transits of Benefics provide positive influences, sub-periods and transits of
Malefics are generally bad influences.
Quoting PVR Narasinh Rao (Astrology - an integrated approach): "Deh
Raashi shows body and Jeev Raashi shows the spirit. Benefics and Malefics
transiting in them affect them positively and negatively (respectively) . If
Jupiter, Mercury and Venus are transiting in one's Jeev Raashi, one may
exhibit a positive spirit and be cheerful. If Mars, Sun, Saturn and Raahu
are transiting in one's Jeev Raashi, one may be without any enthusiasm. If
Mars, Sun, Saturn and Raahu are transiting in one's Deh Raashi, one may
face accidents or death."

Description of Effects of Influences to Deha, Jeev and

in General:
[BPHS, Ch. 46]

120-122. According to the above-mentioned Kaal Chakra, the person, born

in the Ansh of the various Raashi, will be, as under.
Mesh Ansh - brave and a thief; Vrishabh Raashi - wealthy; Mithun Raashi learned; Kark Raashi - king; Sinh Raashi - respected by king; Kanyaa Raashi
- learned; Tulaa Raashi - minister or adviser; Dhanu Raashi - sinful; Kumbh
Raashi - businessman, and Meen Raashi - wealthy.
123-128. If the Deha, or Jeev Raashi are Yuti with Soorya, Mangal, Shani,
or Raahu, the native will die. Worse results may be expected, if the Deha
and Jeeva Raashi are Yuti with two, or all of them. If there is a Malefic in
Deh Raashi, the native suffers ill health; a malefic in a Jeev Raashi will
make the native very timid. If the Deha and/or Jeev Raashi are Yuti with
two Malefics, there will be distress and diseases. Three Malefics in the
Deha and/or Jeev Raashi will cause premature death. Four Malefics in the
Deha and Jeev Raashi will cause definite death. If both the Deha and Jeev
Raashi are occupied by Malefics, there will be fear from king and thieves
and death of the native. If Soorya is in the Deha, or Jeev Raashi, there will
be danger from fire. If Chandra is in the Deha, or Jeev Raashi will cause
danger from water. If Mangal is in the Deh or Jeev Raashi there is fear
from weapons. If Budh is ion Deha or Jeev Raashi, there is fear from windy
troubles. If Shani is in Deha or Jheev Raashi, there is fear from Gulma (a
disease). If there are Rahu and Ketu in Deh or Jeev Raashi, there is fear

from poison. If the Deha, or Jeev Raashi are occupied by Budh, Guru and
Shukra, the native will be wealthy, will enjoy all kinds of comforts and will
have good health. Mixed results may be expected, if the Deha and Jeev
Raashi are occupied by both Benefics and Malefics.
129-130. In the Dashaa of the Raashi, owned by Malefics, the body and soul
will be in distress. The effects will be favorable in the Dashaa of the
Raashi, owned by Benefics. If a Malefic Raashi is occupied by a Benefic
Graha, or, if a Benefic Rashi is occupied by a Malefic Graha, the effects
will be of a mixed nature.

Gati (movements)
We have seen in the Mahaa Dashaa paragraph the irregular movements of
Navaansh Signs. These movements have their specific meaning and are of
course not due to mere coincidence.
The three main Gati are:
(1) Mandooki Gati (frog's leap): Movement of one Raashi by jumping over
one Raashi
Example 1 - Movement from Virgo to Cancer: natal Moon in Ashwinee (etc.),
2nd Pad: Deha Capricorn, Jeev Gemini,
Dashaa Sequence: Lords of Capricorn (Deha), Aquarius, Pisces, Scorpio,
Libra, *Virgo, Cancer*, Leo, Gemini (Jeev)
Example 2 - Movement from Leo to Gemini: natal Moon in Bharanee etc., 1st
Pad: Deha Scorpio, Jeev Pisces
Dashaa Sequence: Lords of Scorpio (Deha), Libra, Virgo, Cancer, *Leo,
Gemini*, Taurus, Aries, Pisces (Jeev)
[BPHS, Ch. 46]

'101-102. The effects of the Dashaa of the Raashi with Mandookee Gati in the Savya
Chakra are distress to friends, relations, parents and elders and there is likely to be cause
for trouble from poison, weapons, thieves and enemies. In the Mandookee Dasha of the
Gati of a Raashi from Sinh to Mithun there is the likelihood of the death of the mother,
or self, trouble from Government and possibility of brain fever.
106-108. In the Dashaa of the Raashi with the Mandooki Gati in the
Apasavya Chakra the effects will be distress to wife and conditions, loss of
children, possibility of feverish conditions and loss of position.
In both above mentioned examples these results are to be expected in
Cancer and Gemini period.

(2) Markatee Ghati (monkey's leap): Backward movement to the previous

Raashi
Example - Movement from Leo to Cancer: Natal Moon in Rohinee etc., 3rd
Pad: Deha Aquarius, Jeev Virgo
Dashaa Sequence: Lords of Virgo (Jeev), *Leo, Cancer*, Gemini, Taurus,
Aries, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius (Deha)
[BPHS, Ch. 46]

'103. The effects of the Dashaa of Raashi with Markatee Gati in the Savya
Chakra are loss of wealth, agricultural products and animals, death of
father, or an elderly close relation and feeling of lethargy.
In the Dasha of the Raashi with the Markatee Gati there may be danger
from watery places, loss of position, distress from father, punishment from
Government and wandering in the forests; with the Sinhaavalokan there
may be destruction of the dwelling and death of father etc.'
In above mentioned example these results are to be expected in Cancer
period.
(3) Sinhaavalokan Gati (lion's leap): Movement of a Raashi to the 5th and
9th Raashi
Example 1 - Movement from Pisces to Scorpio: Natal Moon in Bharanee etc.,
3rd Pad: Deha Libra, Jeev Virgo
Dashaa Sequence: Lords of Libra (Deha), Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn,
Aquarius, *Pisces, Scorpio*, Libra, Virgo (Jeev)
Example 2 - Movement from Sagittarius to Pisces: Natal Moon in Bharanee
etc., 2nd Pad: Deha Aquarius, Jeev Virgo
Dashaa Sequence: Lords of Aquarius (Deha), Capricorn, *Sagittarius,
Aries*, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo (Jeev)
[BPHS, Ch. 46]

'104-105. The effects of the Dashaa of the Raashi with Sinhaavalokan Gati
in the Savya Chakra are possibility of injury from animals, loss of amity
with friends, distress to near relations, drowning in a well, fall from
animals, possibility of harm from poison, weapons and diseases and
destruction of residential dwelling.
In both above mentioned examples these results are to be expected in
Scorpio and Pisces period.
Description of the Effects of Gati (movements):
[BPHS, Ch. 46]

109-111. If the movement is from Meen to Vrishchik, the native may suffer
from fever; if from Kanyaa to Kark, there may be loss of brothers and
kinsmen; if from Sinh to Mithun, there may be ill health of the wife; if
from Sinh to Kark, the native may die; if from Dhanu to Mesh, there may
be death of uncles and similar relations. If the Raashi is Yuti with a
malefic, adverse conditions may be expected in the Dashaa of the Raashi.
Favorable effects will be felt in its Dashaa, if the Rashi is Yuti with a
Benefic.
112-113. O Brahmin! In the Kaal Chakra Dashaa favorable and unfavorable
effects may be predicted, after taking into account the directions of the
Raashi and Graha.
114-119. If the movement is from Kanyaa to Kark, good results are realized
in places, located in the East and at that time journeys to the places in the
North prove fruitful. Unfavorable effects will be felt in places, located in
the West and the South. It will be advisable not to undertake journeys in
those directions in the Dashaa of these Raashi. If the movement is from
Sinh to Mithun, no journey should be undertaken to places, located in the
East. However, the journeys to the South-West will prove fruitful in the
Dasha of those Raashi. If the movement is from Kark to Sinh, journeys
during that period to the South will prove unfavorable and result in loss and
the native has to return from the South to the West. If the movement is
from Meen to Vrishchik, there will distress, if the native goes to the
North. The same would happen, if the movement is from Dhanu to Makar.
There may be ill health, imprisonment, or death, if the movement is from
Dhanu to Mesh. There may be gains, comforts and property and marriage, if
the movement is from Dhanu to Vrishchik. It will not be advisable to
undertake journeys to the West during the related period, if the movement
is from Sinh to Kark. Favorable results should be predicted, if the Raashi
are Yuti with Benefics and adverse, if the Raashi are Yuti with Malefics.
Addition:
P.V.R. Rao explains this leaps shortly in his book 'Vedic Astrology: An
Integrated Approach':
Lion's Leap - [Savya Nakshatra] Fear of animals, loss of friends, distress to
near relations, fall in dungeons, danger from poison and weapons, fall from a
vehicle, fever, destruction of house
[Apasavya Nakshatra] Death of father or elders, loss of position
Monkey's Leap - [Savya Nakshatra] Loss of wealth, agriculture and animals,
death of father or elders
[Apasavya Nakshatra] Danger from water, distress to father, loss of

position, anger of rulers, wandering in the forests

Frog's Leap - [Savya Nakshatra] Distress to relatives, elders and father,
trouble from poison, weapons, enemies, thieves. In Le-to-Ge leap, death of
mother or, death of native, trouble from rulers and diseases are possible.
[Apasavya Nakshatra] Distress to wife, loss of children, fever, sickness and
loss of position.
In addition, Paraashar listed the directions to prefer and the directions
avoid, while traveling and relocating, during different leaps.
- In the leap from Virgo to Cancer, East will give great results. One can
take up an auspicious journey in the Northern direction.
- In the leap from Leo to Gemini, east should be avoided. A journey to the
southwest will be fruitful.
- In the leap from Cancer to Leo, a move in the southern direction results
in losses. West is favorable.
- In the leap from Pisces to Scorpio and in the normal movement from
Sagittarius to Capricorn, there will be troubles in the Northern direction.
- In the leap from Sagittarius to Aries, journeys should be avoided, as they
may result in sickness, imprisonment or death.
- In the normal movement from Sagittarius to Scorpio, journeys will bring
comforts, wealth and sexual pleasures.
- In the leap from Leo to Cancer, western direction should be avoided.
Dashaa of a sign just after the above 3 jumps usually results in important
often bad) changes in life.'

Chakra Dashaa
Chakra Dasa is described in BPHS, Ch. 46, Sl. 50-51. It is a very easy to
calculate Dashaa (at least the Mahaa Dashaa of it):
1. If the birth is at night, the Dashaa will commence from Lagna Rashi.

This Dashaa isn't included in any software, nevertheless Paraashar
mentions in at a very early chapter in BPHS and therefore we can assume
that it is a very fundamental and important Dashaa - in fact he rejects all
other Rashi Dasa systems ('not appropriate' ) except Varnada, Niraayan
Shool and Chakra Dashaa (this includes most known and used Chara Dashaa
as well!). He really denotes Chakra Dashaa as the Dashaa system of the 12
Raashi in the Zodiac'! (Varnad and Niraayan Shool Dashaa are AayurDashaa indicating longevity, death or at least severe problems.)
Each Raashi period is of 10 years leads to a total sum of 120 years, the
maximum life span of human beings in Kali Yug, like in Vinshottaree Dashaa.
Lagna is related to night births, Lagna Lord to day births. This is logical
because planets are carrying activities with regard to the Raashi/Bhaav
they are lording, *they* are the active energies and principles. Sandhyaa is
a time of transition and transformation: The Sun is wandering from day
into night (from the upper half - the bright half of the day above the
Ascendant - into the lower half - the dark half of the day below the
ascendant). Starting Mahaa Dashaa for natives born during Sandhyaa time
are started from 2nd Bhaav/Lagna.
Note: This principle could be referred to two conditional Dashaa as well,
Shodashottaree Dashaa and Shat Trinsh Sama Dashaa. I do not use them even if applicable - when the native is born during Sandhyaa.

Interpretation: Due to Parashara's highest estimation of Chakra Dashaa it

must be a Phalit Dashaa, a Dashaa suitable and applicable for all themes and
topics.

Mool Dashaa
Mool Dashaa belongs to the most important planetary periods cycles (in my
view it is the most important one). It is based on the strengths of planets
in Kendra firstly, then in Panaphar and finally in Aapoklim. Mool Dashaa is
part of the three most important Dashaa - Mool, Vinshottaree Dashaa and
Kaal Chakra Dashaa. Mool Dashaa is based on Raashi, on the sequence of the
most powerful Graha in Raashi in natal chart, more exactly.
Next important Dashaa - coming after Mool, Vinshottaree and Kaal Chakra
Dashaa - are the Conditional Dashaa (and one CD is always applicable),

Naaraayan/ Chara Dashaa and Kaal Dashaa. Varnad and Niryan Shool Dashaa
are Aayur- Dashaa, related to longevity in general and endings/problems of
all kinds in particular.
Mool means 'root'. Mool Dashaa shows the roots, basics, fundaments of
your life, the true reality behind it. It indicates the main experiences for
your true self. Mool Dashaa is the most fundamental and the most reliable
Dashaa cycle - the first look should go to Mool Dashaa.

Calculation and Sequence of Maha Dashaa

Mool Dashaa is started from Lagna, Moon or Sun, whichever is stronger.
The strength depends on placements of Graha in Raashi / Bhaav (whole
house system of course) - the first Mahaa Dashaa starts with the
strongest Graha in a Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) from Lagna/ Moon/ Sun
(whichever is stronger), then weaker planets in Kendra follow. After having
passed all planets in Kendra, planets in Panaphar Houses (2nd, 5th, 8th,
11th) follow (according to their strength). Last sequence is that of planets
in Aapoklim (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th).
Note: The other two calculation options are valid and important as well.
Counting of Bhaav should be done from the main reference (Lagna, Moon,
Sun), as always.

Calculation and Sequence of Antar-Dashaa

Antar-Dashaa of Mahaa Dashaa start with the Mahaa Dashaa Lord and
continue the same sequence of planets as in Mahaa Dashaa.

Interpretation of Mool Dashaa

Mool Dashaa is a Raashi Dashaa, based on Raashi/ Bhaav, therefore Raashi
and not Nakshatra as in Vinshottaree Dashaa - are of utmost importance.
Bhaav are structured in "Kendra" (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th house), "Trikon" (1st,
5th, 9th House), "Dusthanas" (6th, 8th, 12th house), "Upachaya' (3rd, 6th,
10th, 11th house) and "Marak" (2nd, 7th House).
--Trikon are the houses of Lakshmee, of fortune and provide more
auspicious periods.
-Kendra are the houses of Vishnu, of sustaining, the backbone of our
horoscope and our life and provide normally auspicious periods (but not as
auspicious at the best houses, Trikon, in a chart).
--Dusthaan are Shiv's domain, providing lot of problems and obstacles in
our life.
--Upachaya are houses of development, therefore indicating some life
struggle and need for development, therefore providing problems and

challenges as well.
--Maarak are "houses of death" and can lead to endings.
Look, what kind of lordship a Dashaa Planet obtains: Is he Lord of a Trikon
(Lakshmee) House - then auspicious. Is he Lord of a Dusthaan, or Upachaya
House - then more difficult. (To repeat this, there are of course lot of
exceptions due to very individual constellations in a chart!)
This is to be done from various references: MD/AD/PD Lord, Moon, Lagna,
Arudhaa Lagna are the most important references, then Sun, Horaa Lagna,
Ghatee Lagna and Bhaav/ Graha Arudhaa.
[Kalyana Varmas Saravali, Ch. 41]

1. The Dashaa duration of a planet is equal to the number of years it

contributes (as per Mool Dashaa scheme). All planets yield in their Dashaa
pleasant, or unpleasant results according to their (natal) dispositions.
2. Order of the Scheme - According to Manitha, those, who are born during
day time will have the Dashaa commencing with that of the Sun, while the
night-born will have it from that of Venus. But this view is not acceptable
to other preceptors.

3. Satya's View
The first Dashaa will be of the strongest of the Ascendant, the Sun and
the Moon followed by the ones in Angle, Panaphar and Aapoklim. This is the
view held by Satyacharya.
4-5. The first Dashaa will be of the strongest of the Ascendant, the Sun
and the Moon. Then the planets in Angles will be Dashaa Lords. Thereafter
the planets in Panaphar (2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th Houses) will lord over the
major periods, while the last Dashaa will be headed by the planets posited
in Aapoklim (3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th Houses). If Angles etc are occupied by
more than one planet, the strongest will have its Dashaa first. Even, if the
strengths of these be identical, then the order will be according to
maximum years donated by these planets Granting, that these durations
are also similar, then the risings of planets will prevail, Even, if one of the
triad, viz the Ascendant, the Sun and the Moon, is strong, then Satya's
scheme, as above should be resorted to. If none is strong enough, then the
Dashaa scheme of other preceptors may be considered.
6. Auspicious Periods - Planets in exaltation, own Raashi, own Navaansh,
friendly Sign, possessing full rays and those with full strength prove

auspicious in their Dashaa. At the commencement of a Dashaa a planet, that

is strong, or is in a friendly division, or is in aspect to a benefic will also
yield similar good results.
7. Inauspicious Periods - The planet, that is in its Sign of fall, Sign ruled by
an enemy, Navaansh of an enemy, combust in the Sun, devoid of splendor, or
is in aspect to Malefics will yield inauspicious effects in its Dashaa.
8. If a planet has departed from its exaltation, its Dashaa is known, as
Avarohinee (stepping down) Dashaa. If, however, it is in own, or friendly
divisions, the effects will be medium, i.e. neither good nor bad. The Dashaa
of a planet approaching its exaltation, departing from debilitation, is known,
as Aarohinee (climbing) Dashaa. If the said planet is in inimical, or
debilitation divisions, it will inflict difficulties.
9. The Sun is the ripener (or baker) of the effects of a Dashaa, while the
Moon is the sustaining agent. That is why the Moons transit position at the
time of the commencement of a Dashaa should be duly considered.

Major Lords Placement at the Commencement of a Dashaa

16. If the Lord of the Dashaa is in the Ascendant prevailing at the moment
the Dasa begins, or in the 3rd, 6th, 10th, or 11th from the said Ascendant,
the Dashaa then proves excellent.
19. Special Effects Based on Navaansh - Even though a planet may be in
friendly Sign, if it occupies simultaneously a Navaansh belonging to its
enemy, or be in fall in Navaansh, the effects in the Dashaa concerned will
be mixed. A weak planets Dashaa will be futile.
20. Lagna Dashaa - The Ascendants major period will prove auspicious, if it
is in the first decanate of a Movable Sign; medium in the second decanate
and poor in the 3rd decanate. The reverse is true with a Common Sign
ascending, i e. third, second and first decanate will, respectively, be
auspicious, medium and poor. As for a Fixed Sign ascending first, second
and third decanates will, respectively, give poor, auspicious and medium
effects.
21. Naisargik Dashaa - The Naisargik Dashaa follows in the order of the
Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, the Sun, Saturn and the Ascendant.
22-24. If the planet is exalted, or is endowed with temporal strength, or
full strength, in its Dashaa incomparably auspicious results will come to

pass. The planet, that is in its own Sign, Mool Trikon Sign, own Navaansh, or
hemmed between Benefics will yield moderately auspicious effects. The
planet, that is going towards its exaltation (departing from Sign of its fall),
or is placed in friendly Signs etc, feebly auspicious effects will be felt.
Similar deductions should be made in regard to planets otherwise placed.

Other Placements of Planets

66-68.Those exalted in the Ascendant confer rulership of a province in
their Dashaa, while those in exaltation in other Angles will bestow, wealth,
conveyances and rulership of a country. If a planet is in the 6th, the native
will be subjected to evils, misfortunes etc. In the Dashaa of a planet placed
in the 8th, death will be inflicted. There will only be confinement in the
Dashaa of a combust planet. The Dasha of a retrograde planet will cause
wanderings, like that of a wheel, evils and enmity. This applies only to
Malefics in retrogression, but not to Benefics.
69. Though one may be a king, he will become a servant of his own servants
in the Dashaa of a planet devoid of strength, a planet totally devoid of
strength, a planet in fall, a planet in deep fall, a planet in inimical Sign and a
planet in dead enemies.
70. In the Dashaa of a planet placed in enemies Sign, there will be
circumstances to leave ones own country (in distress), diseases, loss of
position, frequent quarrels and confinement.
71. Even a king with vast number of elephants, that can wet the earth with
their ichors, will surely wander in difficulty in the Dashaa of a planet
occupying an inimical Sign.
72-73. In the Dashaa of the planets placed in the 6th, 5th, 9th, or 7th
Houses identical with inimical Signs, there will be troubles to limbs and
secondary limbs (like the nose), while the Dashaa of the planet in the 8th
House identical with its inimical House will cause beheading (or afflictions
to head), fear from enemies, wanderings in foreign places, troubles of
confinement, diseases etc. If the Dashaa of a planet, that is in fall be in
operation humiliation from royal sources will follow.
74. The Native will derive (good) effects of a weak planets Dashaa in
dreams and thoughts. The effects due to Panch Mahaa Purush Yog will come
to pass in the Dashaa of the concerned planets.

75. The planets in Sheershodaya Signs will give their effects in the
beginning of the Dashaa; those in Ubhayodaya will give in the middle of the
Dashaa effects due to them and those in Prishthodaya Signs as well, as
those in fall will reveal their effects in the concluding parts of their
Dashaa.
[Kalyana Varmas Saravali, Ch. 42]

Distribution of Sub-periods to Planets in Mool Dashaa.

1. A planet, that is conjunct the Dashaa Lord will sub rule half of the
period. The sub-rulership further goes to planets, as under: one third to
that in the 5th/ 9th from the Dashaa Lord; one seventh to that in the 7th
from the Dashaa Lord and one fourth to that in the 4th/ 8th with
reference to Dashaa Lord.
2-3. The sub-Lords will ripen the sub-period effects according to their own
nature. Should there be more than one planet in the Houses specified
above, the strongest of them will rule over the sub period (and not others).
The sub periods of Benefics will yield benefic results, while those of
Malefics will give inauspicious effects. According to some authorities,
planets in Angles will first lord over the sub-periods followed by those in
Panaphar (2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th) and Aapoklim (3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th)
4. According to Satyacharya, the sub periods will rule according to the
orders of strength in case there is more than one planet in one House.
5. Take the fractions (as mentioned in Shlok 1) and reduce them to
equivalent fractions with a common denominator. Add up the aliquot parts
of the Dashaa representative of the various numerators leaving out the
denominators. The sub periods will be arrived at, when the various aliquots
are converted into years within the main Dashaa and divided by a common
factor.
6-7. Planets, that are conjunct the major Lord will cause confinement and
loss of wealth in their sub periods. If, however, the major Lord is in an
Angle, or in a Trine from the Ascendant, there will be great happiness. If a
planet conjunct 2, or more planets be in an inimical House, in such sub
period, only diseases, evils, quarrels and royal displeasures will come to
pass.
8. In the sub period of a planet in the 7th from the Mool Dashaa Lord,
death of wife, or the wives becoming a servant of an enemy, or getting
attached to another man is denoted.

9-10. Death, destruction of wealth, or imprisonment will result in the sub

period of the planet in the 8th from the Mool Dashaa Lord. If 2, or 3, or 4
malefic join in one House other than an Angle, or a Trine, imprisonment,
destruction and poverty will be the order of the sub-period.
11. In the sub period of a planet in the 4th from the Mool Dashaa Lord
there will be gain through friends, happiness and increased honors.
[Kalyana Varmas Saravali, Ch. 8]

The Dasha of the strongest comes first among Lagna, Soorya and Chandra.
Then comes the Dashaa of the Graha, that is angular, while the third
Dashaa is of that, which is non-angular. Should all the three be of equal
strength, then the order is based on larger number of years contributed.
Should even the years be not different, then the one rises after next
conjunction will be predominant. Finally, if these risings are similar, then
the Dashaa of the one, that has risen first will lead the scheme.
Based on the strength of the above mentioned trinity, the three various
stages of life will be effective in order. The strength, or otherwise of
these three will decide the effects of the three stages of life.
As regards the Dashaa of a Graha in exaltation, friend's Raashi, or own
Raashi, such Ansh, its debilitation, or inimical Raashi, or, when a Graha is
eclipsed, it will give mixed effects and prove auspicious in the second half.
Though a Graha may be in evil Raashi, or evil Ansh, or eclipsed by Soorya,
he will yield good results, if he has potency to bestow. If he is in enemy's
Bhaav, or Ansh, he will under the circumstances, yield kingdom.
The Graha placed in the Horaa, or Navaansh of Soorya will give full effects,
while the one in Chandra's Navaansh, or Horaa, it is only in a pipe dream,
that the results mature.
The Dasha of a Graha in Lagna, exaltation Bhaav, own Raashi, or own
Dreshkaan will be fully beneficial. The effects of such a Graha placed in
any Navaansh, as above will only be mixed.
At the commencement of a Dashaa, if the Dashaa lord is in a friendly
Bhaav, or exalted, or in an Upachaya Bhaav, in a Kon, or in Yuvatee Bhaav,
there will be generally good results.

Only after analysis of the said rules, a wise person should predict good, or
bad results.
[Brihat Jataka, Ch. 8]

Stanza 1: The most powerful among Lagna, Soorya and Chandra, with
planets in their Kendra give results in the commencement, middle, and last
periods of life respectively. If planets are not in Kendra, etc., the results
will flow in the commencement even from Aapoklim planets.
Stanza 7: If a planet is in a good house and joins debilitated or unfriendly
Navaansh, it gives mixed results. The names are fixed for these indicative
of their results. I shall give the results of the periods of the Sun, etc,
later on.
Stanza 19: Good periods give happiness and bad periods produce misery.
Mixed periods give mixed results and the result of the Lagna Dashaa will be
similar in nature to its Lord.
Stanza 22: During the time of an auspicious planet, the mind of the person
will be good. It enables the man to get wealth and secure happiness. The
Dashaa may also be known by the happiness or misery the man is subjected
to. The results produced by powerless planets will be enjoyed in dreams and
thoughts.
Stanza 23: If one planet represents two contrary results, the effect will
be the destruction of those events. but if one is stronger than the other,
the stronger prevails. If one planet represents one and another indicates a
contrary result, there'll be both the results. Planets give good or bad in
their own periods.

Sudarshan Chakra Dashaaa

Pt Devachandra Jha's and Santanam's commentaries on Sudarshan Chakra
Dashaa chapter are worth reading. They give some helpful explanations but
in a crude manner. For instance, adding the Shubh and A-Shubh Vargaank
of Divisional should take into account Vinshopak Bal also which they forgot.
D1 and D10, for instance, do not have equal strengths.
Sudarshan Chakra Dashaa is a very obscure topic and no commentator has
treated it properly. Nor anyone uses it. Saptarshi Astrology writes that
Varsh Phal is a non-Vaidik technique. They do not know that Soorya
Siddhaant gives formula for computing Varshesh, Maasesh, etc. Moreover,
even Taajak Neelakanthee uses Soorya Siddhaantik Year but the error is

that 'mean' year is used instead of true year. It proves Soorya

Saiddhaantik method was already in vogue when the eclectic text Taajak
Neelakanthee was created. Sudarshan Chakra Varsh or Maas Pravesh needs
same thing. It was from Sudarshan Chakra chapter in Brihat Paraashar
Horaa Shaastra the idea of Five levels of Varsh Pravesh Chakra (VPC)
which work wonderfully well provided Soorya Saiddhaantik method is used.
Nowhere else in any ancient or modern text one will find the mention of
five levels of Varsh Pravesh Chakra. This is the first major benefit of
Sudarshan Chakra Dashaa. Hence, we may say that Varsh Pravesh Chakra of
five levels is a part of Sudarshan Chakra Dashaaa.
But Sudarshan Chakra Dashaaa has two peculiarities :
(1) Solar and Lunar charts are also used in conjunction with Lagna chart,
and
(2) Each year or month has its own importance attached to a particular
Bhaav.
This second peculiarity brings Sudarshan Chakra Dashaaa closer to the
method of predictions based on annual patterns mentioned in
Naadee/Sanhitaa texts like Bhrigu Sanhitaa, Dev Keralam, etc. Research is
still needed mainly because most of the Naadee/Sanhitaa manuscripts are
unpublished. The first published version of Brihat Paraashar Horaa
Shaastra (Khemraj Edition) contained a list of Yog which remind us of the
150 Naadee Ansh Yog.

Other Things to Know About Sudarshan Dashaa

By V Jha

Exactly the same technique should be used to make Divisional Chart's

Sudarshan Chakra Dashaa (it is not given in any text but works well).
Judicious use of Divisional Charts is needed for better predictions. For
instance, D-1 and D-9 Charts should be used always (and D-60 too if birth
time is accurate), but relevant Divisional Chart should also be used for
given topics, e.g., D-10 for career or achievements.
Sudarshan Chakra Dashaa repeats after each 12 year, hence Vinshottaree /
Transits / Varsh Phal should be used to pinpoint the exact time of the
events. This problem is not faced in the month or Pratyanatar Dashaa
charts of Sudarshan Chakra Dashaa.
In the simplest form of Sudarshan Chakra Dashaa, forget about the month
or Pratyanatara Dashaa and see only Annual Dashaa, forget Divisional,
forget Chandra or Soorya Kundalee, and use only D-1. It is so simple that

one can make predictions without using any machine, paper and pen, but the
results will be crude, which may be further refined with adding Chandra +
Soorya Kundalee, Divisional Charts, Aspect Tables, relations, other Dashaa,
etc. This is the best and easiest method of Vaidik Jyotish. Vinshottaree
Dashaa needs Dashaa Onset Chart which is very very difficult because the
precise birth time is needed for that. Varsh Phal is easier but it is less
powerful and less reliable (but it is highly reliable when Vinshottaree
Dashaa is used and reinforces it).
Soorya Siddhaant is the earliest proof of use of Varsh Phal, Maas Phal, etc
(it gives formulas for computing Varshesh, Maasesh, etc, and Taajak
Neelakanthi also uses Soorya Saiddhaantik year-length), while the five
levels of Varsh Phal - Maas Phal, Pratyantar (2.5 days), Sookshma (5 hours)
and Praan (25 minutes) using simple Varsh and D-1 charts give astonishingly
accurate results. For any year, Chandra or Soorya Charts will be made from
the Lagna chart (D-1) of that year / month / Pratyantar, and there is no
relation with speed of the Sun or the Moon.

Example of this Dashaa

Vinshottaree Dashaa is the most used and 'most appropriate' (BPHS)

Dashaa system in our era, it certainly belongs to the most important
planetary periods cycles. Most astrologers mainly - or only - work with this
one Dashaa cycle - but it is very important to include other cycles - at least
Moola and Kaalchakra Dashaa - as well.
Vinshottaree means '120' - 120 years are the possible maximum span of life
of a human being in Kali Yug. It is very interesting that modern natural
scientists are confirming this; this means with particular measures
prolongation of our life up to 120 years is - theoretically - possible.
Vinshottaree Dashaa is part of the three most important Dashaa - Mool,
Vinshottari and Kaal Chakra Dashaa - and relatively time sensitive: One
minute in birth time variation results in approximately one week in Mahaa
Dashaa cycle.
Note:
Next important Dashaa are Conditional Dashaa (and one CD is always
applicable), Naaraayan/ Chara Dashaa and Kaal Dashaa. Varnad and

Niryan Shool Dashaa are Aayur Dashaa, related to longevity in general and
endings/problems of all kinds in particular.

Vinshottaree Dashaa is based on Moon's Nakshatra placement - reflect

upon the Moon and its signification: "Moon is the mind." Vinshottaree shows
the direction of your mind, and what is going on in your mind, is manifesting
in life (mind can be conscious and unconscious as we know from
psychology!) . If you think of marriage, it is far more probable that you will
marry, if you think of profession, it is far more probable that you will look
for a profession - if not, the probability of marriage and profession is
decreased (but not impossible, there is always the possibility of sudden
events).
Conclusion:
Vinshottaree shows your mind and his evolution, development, how your
mind, mentality and consciousness creates your world and manifests
particular experiences.

Vinshottaree Dashaa is highly reliable (but be aware of correct birth time

and correct Ayanaansh use - correct Ayanaansh is slightly different from
standard value, between 0 deg 1 min and 0 deg 2 min - which can result up
to three weeks difference in timing).

Calculation and Sequence of Mahaa Dashaa

Starting point is the placement of the natal Moon in Nakshatra, Mahaa
Dashaa (main planetary period) starts with the Lord of this Nakshatra. The
missing fraction of the traversed Moon in his sojourn through the
Nakshatra is calculated in order to get the exact period length of the very
first Mahaa Dashaa.

Calculation and Sequence of Antar-Dashaa

Antar-Dashaa of Mahaa Dashaa start with the Mahaa Dashaa Lord and
continue with the normal sequence of planets : Ketu - Venus - Sun - Moon Mars - Raahu - Jupiter - Saturn - Mercury. For example, taking Venus as
Mahaa Dashaa Lord, the Antar-Dashaa sequence starts with Venus as well,
followed by Sun AD, then Moon AD and so on.

Interpretation of Vinshottaree Dashaa

Vinshottaree Dashaa is based on the Nakshatra placement of natal Moon
and the natural sequence of Nakshatra Lords. As 'Udu Dashaa' Nakshatra
the 27 lunar mansions - comprising of 1320' in the zodiac - are of utmost
importance for understanding Vinshottaree Dashaa in the proper way.

Each planet Lords over three Nakshatra, as there are nine main planets,
this results in 27 Nakshatra. The following table shows which planets lords
which Nakshatra with the Mahaa Dashaa span of them:

How to interpret Vinshottaree Dashaa?

Let us take an example, Raahu Mahaa Dashaa (MD):
1. First look must go at the natural significations (Kaarak) of Raahu.
2.. Second glance goes to the "functional significations" of Raahu: in which
Bhaav his Mool Trikon (Gemini) and his own house (Aquarius) is posited?
Which Bhaav Raahu is ruling (Mool Trikon Raashi is more important)?
Including Raahu as Chara Kaarak: Mars and Saturn have the same longitude
(10), therefore 8 Chara Kaarak Scheme is advisable and Raahu becomes
Maatri Kaarak.
3. Raahu MD activates the "Nakshatra" where Raahu is posited in (e.g.
Bharanee, Mrigshiraa, Uttaraa Bhaadrapad). Yuti(s) with and Drishti on
Raahu are activated as well.

4. Raahu MD activates the "Raashi and Bhaav of the Nakshatra" in which he

is posited. Yutis and Drishtis on this Raashi are activated as well.
5. Raahu MD activates the "Nakshatras of which Raahu is Lord of":
Aardraa, Swaati, Shatabhishaa. Planets posited in this Nakshatras are
activated as well, with their Yutis and Drishtis. Nakshatra Lattas are to be
considered as well.
6a. Raahu MD activates all "Ansh" in which Raahu is placed in: Raahu in
Horaa, Drekkan, Chathurtaansh, Saptaansh, Ashtaansha, Navaansh,
Dashaansh, Dwaadashaansh, Kaalaansh/ Shodashaansh, Vinshansh,
Chaturvinshaansh, Trinshaansh, Khavedaamnsh, Akshavedaansh,
Shashtiyaansh, Nava-Navaansh, (Dwaadashaansh- Navaansh). Of particular
importance are the Ansh which are divisions of the Nakshatra (1320'):
Navaansh (320', equal to a Nakshatra Pad), Bhaansh / Nakshatraansh
(106', division of a Nakshatra by 12 and dividing a Navaansh by 3) and
Akshavedaansh (045', division of a Nakshatra by 20 and dividing a
Navaansh by 5). Nava-Navaansh (divisions of a Navaansh by 9) and perhaps
even Dwaadashaansh-Navaansh (division of a Navaansh by 12) are important
as well.
6b. Raahu MD as well activates Gemini (his Mool Trikon Raashi) and
Aquarius (his own Raashi) in all Ansh, with all Graha posited in them.
7. Strengths and Avasthaa of Raahu.

General Dashaa Analysis Structure

1. Natural significations of the Dashaa Lord
2. Functional significations of the Dashaa Lord (lordship over Bhaav(s),
Dashaa Lord as Char Kaarak)
3. Attributes and qualities of the Nakshatra the current Dashaa Lords are
posited in (MD, AD, PD Nakshatras)
4. Attributes and qualities of the Raashi/ Bhaav where this Nakshatra is
posited in, and Drishtis on it
5. Attributes and qualities of the Nakshatra which this planet rules
6. Attributes and qualities Anshas of the Nakshatra or Raashi where this
Nakshatra is placed in (MD, AD, PD Lord in Varg)
7. Strengths (Shadbal, Vinshopak Bal) and Avasthaa of the Dashaa Lords
(MD, AD, PD)
- and 8. "Mutual Placements of Dashaa Lords:" Position of Antar-Dashaa Lord

with regard to Mahaa Dashaa Lord, of Pratyantardasa Lord with regard to

Antar-Dashaa Lord, of Sookshm Dashaa Lord with regard to Pratyantar
Dashaa Lord: the Dashaa Lord of the higher level is to be seen as Lagna for
the subsequent sub-period)
9. Position of Dashaa Lord to "various references": Moon, Lagna, Arudha
Lagna, Sun, Horaa Lagna, Ghatee Lagna and (perhaps) Bhaav Lagna
Bhaav are structured in
"Kendra" (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th house),
"Trikon" (1st, 5th, 9th house),
"Dusthaan" (6th, 8th, 12th house),
"Upachaya (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th house) and
"Maarak (2nd, 7th house).
--Trikon are the houses of Lakshmee, of fortune and provide more
auspicious periods.
--Kendra are the houses of Vishnu, of sustaining, the backbone of our
horoscope and our life and provide normally auspicious periods (but not as
auspicious at the best houses, Trikon, in a chart).
--Dusthaan are Shiva's domain, providing lot of problems and obstacles in
Is he Lord of a Dusthaan, or Upachaya - then more difficult.
(To repeat this, there are of course lot of exceptions due to very individual
constellations in a chart!)
This is to be done from various references: MD/AD/PD Lord, Moon, Lagna,
Arudha Lagna are the most important references, then Sun, Hora Lagna,
Ghatee Lagna and Bhaav or Graha Arudhaa.
These nine steps apply to
1. The "Natal Chart"
2. Each "Entry Chart" of MD period, AD period, PD period
