Who Started The Cold War (Lesson 3)

The Cold War tends to bring to mind the concept that the world is not big enough for both
communism and capitalism to survive. Yet blaming someone for the Cold War and the paranoia
that came along with it can sometimes be an interesting experience itself. To accomplish this
you will first have to read an assigned reading and go through the OPVL process.
Then working with your group you will create a poster that explains whether the Soviet Union or
United States was responsible to pushing the relationship of the two countries into a Cold War
based on the different documents. Each member of the group is responsible for a corner of the
poster with the center dedicated to the placing the blame for the Cold War on to the Soviet Union
or the United States of America. You need to include the following in your corner

A image that helps represent how the document you read promoted the Cold War
o The image must contain at least three references to the speech
A TLDR version of what you felt was important from the document

After you have completed the following you will then present your corner to the group and argue
which country is responsible based off your document. After you have decided whether the
United States or Soviet Union can be held responsible:
Write a paragraph about who started the Cold War based off the documents
o Use the OPVL to help explain why that document could be trusted
o Support your answer using the document as well
Walt Disney Hearing Assignment (Lesson 4)
1. Why did Walt Disney not like those he considered communist?
2. Using support from the text, do you believe he was considered a friendly witness or an
unfriendly witness?
3. What evidence does Walt Disney provide when naming Mr. Howard and Mr. Pomerance
as communist?
4. What words does Walt Disney use to give the sense that he is not a communist?
5. What is Walt Disney doing by giving the names of those people?
Remember OPSL
Origin:Who wrote the speech? What time period? How important is the person who wrote it?
Purpose: Why do they think it was written? What sort of feeling is he trying to convey? Who is
the audience?

Significance: As historians do you believe this is important? What can you tell about the author
through the document? What can you tell about the time period? What can you say about the
authors perspective?
Limitations: What can you not tell from the document? Bias from the author? Can you verify
anything he is saying?

1950s Scavenger Hunt (Lesson 6)

Today, you and your partner must find the following, and compile it into ONE document on
Google Docs. Once it has been compiled, be sure to send it to my e-mail:
Marcelo.gonzalez@thompsonschools.org. Only one partner has to send the scavenger hunt. You
still have to turn in your OWN essay.
After each item (1, 2, 3, etc.), copy and paste the website where you found the info before
continuing on to the next thing. Make sure your Scavenger Hunt sheet meets the expectations on
the rubric.
1. The titles and plot lines of two movies about the 1950s ( You cannot use Dr. Strangelove)
2. One speech given by each president who was in office during the 1950s (that means you
have to know how many there were). Write a summary of the speech instead of
copy/pasting the whole speech
3. The lyrics of two rock and roll songs written in the 1950s and the name of the
singer/group who played them.
1. Extra credit if you include a link to the song on Youtube!
b. Three examples of 1950s slang and their definitions.
c. One meaningful quote from each of the following people (must have been said IN the
1950s):
1. Dwight D. Eisenhower
2. Harry S. Truman
3. Michael Harrington (1 sentence of who he was)
4. Elvis Presley
5. Lucille Ball
6. John Foster Dulles
7. Dean Acheson (1 sentence of who he was)
8. George Kennan
9. Jack Kerouac ( 1 sentence of who he was)
b. Two examples of conformity in 1950s America.
c. One graph or chart on the 1950s baby boom. Use that graphic to help explain, what was
the baby boom?

d. One photograph from the 1950s that represents an ideal American family. Why do you
feel it represents an ideal American family?
e. Two pieces of technology introduced in the 1950s . Explain how the two technologies
may changed American lives.
f. Read the excerpts from The Affluent Society (http://bit.ly/AffluentSociety) and The Other
America (http://bit.ly/OtherAmerica). For each excerpt, include ONE quote you find
significant, and then explain in one paragraph the contrast in American society.
Using your findings, you and your partner must EACH INDIVIDUALLY write a brief (one-page
typed, double-spaced) report explaining whether or not you would want to live in the 1950s. This
essay should include specific quotes/information from the ideas above to support your answer.
You might want to consider: How is the culture different from the 1950s when compared to the
present? Dont forget the threat of nuclear war. (Remember, you and your partners reports will
not be the same, have the same info, or necessarily come to the same conclusions.) This is due:

time and fill the chart out on other examples of U.S. foreign policy throughout the 1950s. After
your chart is complete you will answer (on your own) the two questions ar the bottom of the
