What are the protective factors?

Protective factors assist young people to avoid using and abusing substances.
Although protective factors do not guarantee the prevention of people using
drugs, they may reduce the chances of them experimenting. These include:

Academic achievement

Supportive school

Supportive community

Supportive family

Comprehensive drug education at school

Informative anti-drug campaigns

Beliefs and values

What are the risk factors?

Risk factors increase the chance of young people using and abusing drugs. These
factors have damaging consequences which can be detrimental to the health of
young people. These factors include:

Poor academic achievement

Drug use being accepted by family and peers

Availability and access to drugs

Family/friend conflicts

Poverty and low socio-economic status

Lack of physical activity

Mental illnesses

Loneliness, stress, low self-esteem

Peer pressure

Age and gender (male)

Limited access to groups, network, resources and drug education

How to get help

Talk to either:

A trusted adult such as a teacher, nurse or school counsellor

A friend or older sibling you can trust

Your local doctor can offer a range of services you can access and a variety of
people you can talk to

You can call:

Family Drug Support Australia www.fds.org.au (1300 368 186)

If someone has passed out or collapsed because they have had too much
to drink or are having a reaction to a drug they have consumed CALL
THE AMBULANCE!

Their privacy will be upheld and the only circumstances in which the
police will be called to the hospital is if there is a posed danger or
someone has died.
