Today I Feel .
This lesson is intended to strengthen Alexs expressive language by providing her with receptive
language to communicate her feelings as to strengthen her social-emotional skills through dramatic
play activities.
The lesson goes through the progression: I do, we do and you do with puppets to repeat and create our
own dialogue. Through the use of Today I Feel Silly: And Other Moods That Make My Day by
Jamie Lee Curtis, in small groups we will act out parts of the book that help the students learn first to
repeat and then create dialogues about our emotions.
The first part of the lesson will be a class-wide discussion about emotions, the way we feel and how
we can tell our friends what we are feelings. We will then have a group reading of Today, I Feel
Silly: and Other Moods That Make My Day, after which we will identify feelings for a classroom
Feelings Board. In small groups, children will make their wn puppets and in small groups we will
identify and act out different feelings from the board. Alex will be encouraged in a small group to
identify on the board, say and act out a feeling..

Brief description of the lesson

This lesson is:

Rationale
Timeframe

3-4 year olds (Pre-K)

Classroom Number

This student lacks the expressive language to communicate with her peers and often gets frustrated or
does not try to socialize as a result of this. For this student in particular, the purpose of this lesson is
to help her strengthen her communication skills by building upon her strengths of dramatic play and
repetition and providing her with the language to do so.
5 minutes discussion, 5-10 minutes reading and 5-10 minutes small group activities

Objective(s) of the activity
Connections to standards

As a result of this learning experience, children will be able to retell stories. The short-term goal for
Alex is to be able to repeat a dialogue about emotions and the long-term goal is to be able to create a
dialogue to express emotions.
This activity will enable the child to develop skills for communication in the following area of the
New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core:
F) Expressive Oral Language: 1. Recounts some details of a recent event 2. Tells a short make-believe
story, with assistance 3. Uses oral language to communicate a message (to eventually enable the
student to) 4. Participate in conversations about a variety of topics

Language Objectives

-As a result of this lesson, the students and Alex will be able to repeat a dialogue and retell a story to
provide them with the receptive language to be expressive about their emotions.
-This lesson will give Alex the receptive vocabulary and tools she needs to be expressive about her
emotions

Resources/materials needed:
(Include any worksheets or
sources of evidence for childrens
learning you will use during the
activity)
Technology inclusion (if
applicable)

Socks, buttons, googly eyes, glue, markers, glitter glue, recycled materials such as toilet paper rolls,
paper clips, yarn and other recyclables

Procedures (step by step)

Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation)

As the students made their way to the carpet, to begin the discussion I would ask Hello friends, how
are you today? I would then encourage them to ask me how Im feeling, and I would get very
animated and say Today, I Feel.. using an emotion such as upset or angry and say because
and tell them a short story about my morning and ask someone in the class to tell me how they feel
with the promptly, Today, I Feel
I would then say, today we are going to read a book called, Today I Feel Silly: and Other Moods That
Make My Day, after which we will identify feelings we have felt and that were mentioned in the

Ebook on board, audio books in listening center, a copy of the book and audio book to send home
with Alex

book on a Feelings Board
Instruction/Mini Lesson
- We will read through the book as a whole class, when students raise their hand at a feeling, the
assistant teacher will write it up on the board
- At the end of the book, I will use the puppets to act out some emotions from the list
- Using the prompt, Today I feel, how do you feel today?
- I will have at least one or two student volunteers come up and act out an emotion from the
book with the prompt Today I feel
- Tell the students to go to the tables where there are materials to make their own sock puppets
Independent Practice (small group activity, working with partners, or independently)
The first part of the independent practice will be in small groups at the table, the children will make
their own puppets
-I will float from group to group, focusing on Alex, to ask her about what/who they are making and
how they feel today. In small groups, first students will make their own puppets at the tables.
-As students finish up, I will take them over to the carpet and we will act out emotions with the
prompt, Today, I Feel I will model this for them again
- students will act out an emotion and point it out on the board In small groups we will do the
dramatic play puppet activity, allowing for the children to either act out scenes from the book or to do
an open-ended task of creating their own dialogue
-I will take Alex aside to work together on acting out a few emotions Ive seen her try to express: sad,
frustrated, moody, or angry. We will have the board for reference.

Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps)

-When we come together as a whole group, I want to start a discussion about if we feel like its easier
to say these things with our puppet friends

Learning Activity Plan for PreK-Grade 2

-For Alex, I will have the puppet, book and Feelings Board for reference as needed throughout the
classroom
-When Alex is having difficulty communicating with her peers, this activity and materials from the
activity can be support for Alex
- I will put everyones puppets in their cubbies to take home except for mine and Alexs, we will keep
them on top of the shelf to be used as needed throughout the day.
-To close the lesson, I will ask a few students including Alex, How are you feeling today, and
scaffold her to tell a friend with the prompt Today, I feel..
