Boka Kotorska

Budvanska rivijera

Sveti Stefan

Whether you reach Boka

by land or by sea you will
be fascinated by its beauty.
To the visitor it appears the
mountains have cracked
and let the sea in. This is
the southernmost fjord in
Europe. High mountain peaks rise above the narrow
coastline of Boka, protecting the bay from the severe
northern climate. This is why Boka Kotorska is an oasis of Mediterranean
vegetation such as agave, palms, mimosas, oleander, kiwi, pomegranate, medicinal herbs, and others. Roses bloom in the foothills while
there is still snow on the mountain peaks above the Boka Kotorska
Bay. The bay is naturally divided into four smaller bays: Hercegnovski,
Risanski, Kotorski, and Tivatski. Like a string of pearls, a series of small
towns are strung along the shore. Kotor, Perast, Risan, Herceg Novi, and
Tivat are treasuries of history, art, and beauty.

Below the steep

peaks of Mount
Loven lies the
Budvanska Riviera.
Strung along the
coast southeast
of Budva are the
picturesque small
towns of Sveti Stefan, Miloer, and
Petrovac. Forty settlements and villages and twenty
beaches are harmoniously fitted into the dense Mediterranean vegetation and bathed in an abundance of sun.

Like a ship made of rocks

which has gone aground,
Sveti Stefan is anchored in the
central part of the Budvanska
Riviera. It was recorded for
the first time in 1442 as a fishermens village. Since 1960 it
has become a famous island
hotel with luxurious villas
and apartments. Isolated
from the summer crowds,
this exclusive resort is located on a rocky peninsula, which is connected
to the mainland by an isthmus. Statesmen, politicians, businessmen,
and movie stars and sports stars are its visitors. Its guests were Willy
Brandt, Bobby Fisher, Sophia Loren, Monica Witty, Ingemar Stenmark,
Sylvester Stalone, Claudia Schieffer and many others.

Skadarsko jezero

Ada Bojana

Skadarsko Lake is the last habitat of pelicans in Europe, the

largest bird preserve in Europe,
and one of the last sweetwater
swamps on the Mediterranean.
It is also the largest lake on the
Balkans and one of the biggest
natural and historical attractions in Montenegro.
The Lake is located in the
zetsko-skadarsko valley, 15
km away from the capital of
Podgorica. Two thirds of the lake belongs to Montenegro and one third
to Albania. The surface of Skadar Lake varies, depending on the water
2
2
level, from 370m to 530m . The Montenegrin part of Skadar Lake
and its shores, consisting of 40,000 hectares, has been proclaimed a
National Park. The lake is a crypto-depression, which means that parts
of the bottom of the lake are below sea level. There are about thirty such
places, known as oke, in the lake. The deepest oko is Radu, which is
60 meters deep. The average depth of the lake is 6-8 meters.

On the southernmost Montenegrin coast, the Ada Bojana

island was formed in the location where the river Bojana
flows into the Adriatic Sea.
After a great storm in the middle of the 19th century, the
ship Merito went aground
here. There were also two little islands in this place. River
deposits accumulated for years around this sunken ship and the two
islands and formed a sandbank and later an island. While it grew, the
island divided the river into two branches. The island has a triangular
shape. Two sides of the island are pounded by the river Bojana and
the third side by the Adriatic Sea. The dense Mediterranean vegetation
together with the unusual animal life create a special micro ecological
environment. The beach and the sea bottom are covered with fine sand.
The beach is equipped with sun umbrellas made of reed and sticks. Ada
is most beautiful when the sun sets and the magical colors merge the
sea, sand, and sky into one unique scene. This is a paradise for wind
surfers, sailors, water skiers, horseback riders, adventurous people, and
lovers. This is the favorite destination of German naturalists.

Durmitor

Biogradska gora

Cetinje

A visit to the Durmitor region

in the summer or winter season offers unique mountain
scenery. The town of abljak
is located in the foothills of
Durmitor at 1456 meters above
sea level, which makes it the
highest town in the Balkans.
It is surrounded by 23 peaks
which are over 2300 meters
high. The Durmitor mountain
range is dominated by the Bobotov Kuk peak at 2522 meters high.
There are 18 glacial lakes referred to as mountain eyes in the Durmitor
area. The most famous is the Black Lake which is covered with thick ice
and snow during the winter. In the middle of summer you can even
swim in this lake. In the deep mountain valleys and dense forests are
hidden beautiful and magical lakes such as Zminje Lake, Barno Lake,
Riblje Lake, Vraje Lake, Modro Lake, and many others.

This is one of the last three virgin forests in

Europe. Intensive glacial activity has formed
various geo-morphological shapes including river valleys and mountain peaks, some
of which are over 2000 meters high. The
most famous and largest lake in this area is
the Biogradsko Lake which is located in the
middle of the park at 1094 meters above sea
level.
The National Park covers 5400 hectares of
the central area of the Bjelasica mountain,
between the Tara and Lim rivers. Almost
80% of the parks area is forested and many
trees are over 500 years old. Within this park
there are 26 plant ecosystems, 86 species of
trees and over 220 different plants. The typical mountain trees growing
here are spruce, fir, beech, elm, oak, maple, ash, and linden. Bird watchers and ornithologists can enjoy watching the imperial eagle and grouse,
as well as 150 other kinds of birds. There are 350 identified insect species.
Deer, roe deer, chamois, bears, wolves, wild boars, foxes, rabbits, and
otters inhabit the diverse environment of Biogradska gora.

Cetinje is the old historic

capital of Montenegro, which
has for centuries been the
center of Montenegrin culture and spirituality. In Cetinje
Monte-negrins have created
and preserved both cultural
treasures and arms. The town
museum has the best crafted
and best preserved collections of arms in the Balkans, which represent the supreme achievement
of this craft. The streets of original embassies are witness to the glorious
Montenegrin history. The museums, galleries, archives, artistic academies, artists and bohemians give this town a unique character.
Any stay in Cetinje should include a visit to the monumental mausoleum on the top of Mount Loven. The remains of the great Montenegrin
poet and ruler, Petar II Petrovi Njego, are located here.

High in the rocky mountain massive, often

secluded by the clouds and fog, is the
Ostrog Monastery. It was built in the 17th
century. This is the place where the relics of Saint Vasilije Ostroki are located.
Saint Vasilije Ostroki watches us during
our whole life and waits for us to one day
return to our essence. In 1908 a German
prince wrote, Ostrog is not the sanctity
only for the Orthodox, but is the response
of all religions in the world.
Do not go by car to the upper monastery,
but go on foot as a humble pilgrim. There
the old monk shall tell you the history of
all the miracles that have happened in the
monastery. Both the poor and rich come
here in order to find a cure for their bodies
and souls.

Loven
Mount Loven is a Montenegrin historical beacon.
What Olympus meant
to the ancient Greeks
is what Mount Loven
means to Montenegrins.
Mount Loven was proclaimed a National Park
for historical and cultural
reasons. Mount Loven
is located in southwest
Montenegro above the
ancient coastal town of
Kotor and Boka Kotorska Bay. The Mount Loven National Park covers
the central and highest part of the Loven range and its highest peaks
are tirovnik and Jezerski vrh. The mountain slopes are rocky with
numerous crevices, pits, and deep funnel shaped depressions in the
karst.

Tara
The Tara River, known
as the tear of Europe,
is a powerful, pure, and
wild river located in the
Durmitor National Park.
Its headwaters originate
in a mountain range in
the northern part of the
country and it is 140 km
long. The Tara joins the
Piva River and forms the
Drina River becoming one
of the longest and largest in the Balkans. For centuries the Tara has
carved the soft limestone surface through which it flows and has created
sculptural gorges, chasms, and rock formations. The rivers erosion has
created an 82 km long and 1300 meters deep canyon, the second deepest in the world after the Grand Canyon of the Colorado river. The steep
canyon walls are covered with forests which climb from the depths of
the canyon like fire flames.
Today the canyon attracts tourists craving adventure, thrills, and direct
contact with nature. Rafting down the river on wooden or inflatable
white water rafts is an exciting experience.

was strongly influenced
by the Venetian Republic.
Solid ramparts were built
facing the mountains during Byzantine time. The
old town of Kotor is the
best preserved medieval
urban community in this
part of the Mediterranean. It has succeeded in preserving its structural
character from the 12th to the 14th century. The asymmetric narrow
streets and squares are filled with important and precious buildings of
medieval architecture. Kotor is a UNESCO World Natural and Cultural
