EXTENDING TEACHING AND CURRICULUM EXPERTISE

ID#: 10146066

School: Louis Riel

Partner Teacher: Myles Olsen

Field Instructor:

Claude Oppenheim, PhD

NOTE: This is not a letter of reference and will not be distributed by the WERKLUND SCHOOL OF EDUCATION to potential employers,
however potential employers may ask for this assessment from the student directly.
The purpose of this eight-week field experience is to focus on their ability to extend and deepen their understanding classroom learning as they
move towards meeting the requirements of interim certification. Upon successful completion of this Field Experience, Student Teachers are
prepared to assume the full pedagogical and professional responsibilities of a practicing teacher. Under the guidance of a Partner Teacher, the
Student Teacher has planned and assumed responsibility for 80%-100% of classroom teaching responsibilities in his/her placement classroom.
The following Narrative Assessment should address the Student Teachers participation in the course as a whole as well as their growth and
readiness in relation to the KSAs for Interim Certification outlined by Alberta Education. Finally, an assessment of the Student Teachers
readiness to take on the role of teacher, including evidence of professionalism and collegiality, should be described.

Wendy had a successful field experience in a grade 5/6 split in the Louis Riel School in Calgary. Her work focused on teaching
English language arts and social studies, and also one class of physical education a day.
I observed Wendy teach English language arts lessons on two separate occasions. A very warm, mutually respectful relationship
with her students was evident. A particular strength is the open-endedness of the questions Wendy posed to guide discussions:
Why do you like this book?; What is happening in your novel?; Can you predict the ending?; How would you change the
ending?, and so on. Both observed lessons were well planned.
Wendy contributed to the learning of her colleagues through her detailed D2L posts and responses, and her final class presentation.
Showing particular interest in and empathy for students who find school learning difficult, topics she explored included the
workings of the Response to Intervention (RTI) program, and the early discovery and intervention of severe sight and hearing
impairment.
Highly organized, Wendy volunteered to coordinate my visits to her school, which she did most diligently and efficiently.
Wendys efforts were particularly apparent in the following of the ksas emphasized in EDUC 560:
2e) Understanding that all students can learn, albeit at different rates and in different ways.
2i) Understanding that there are many approaches to teaching and learning.
2j) Understanding of the functions of traditional and electronic teaching/learning technologies.
Wendy is professional and strongly collaborative. She is ready to assume her first teaching position.
