Television Changes the Game in

Childrens Education
Television effects on children: the age old debate. Most parents believe that
modern television corrupts the minds of their innocent children, destructing
their minds to a pile of mush; however, television is actually doing the exact
opposite. (continued on page 2)

Television Changes the Game in Childrens Education

If children expose themselves to more television, then they will
enable themselves to find the confidence to express themselves
and the ability to accept others for their own creativity through the
confidence they are witnessing.
Modern programing is often regarded as too racy and violent for
children, leaving them with a mindset that fighting and erratic
behavior is acceptable. While this stands true for some,
broadcasting also expresses the positive changes. With a recent
flux of commercials and shows depicting people of many different
races, ethnicities, and those in the LGBT community, the subject
remains almost unavoidable.
One opponent, Tim Grubbs, father of three, does not see television
as fit for children, Television teaches children to stop using their
imaginations, and everything on television is so politically correct.
They are only learning how not to offend others. Yes, television is
more politically correct, but television introduces children to new
concepts that they can expand on.
For children to truly understand the difference between their
peers and themselves, Catherine M. Pruissen of childcare.net
states that acting out the scenario or seeing the scenario helps
them to grasp and accept the concepts better. By visually
observing such situations on television, children are essentially
becoming exposed to circumstances that are not present in their
daily lives. If such situations are depicted in a positive light, the
children will pick up on the concept being positive and accept it. If
we enable children to watch television with subjects of difference,
they will become more accepting of the difference that make the
world what it is.

The Pittsburgh Catholic

Population Plummets
One of Allentowns most admired churches has officially closed its
doors, being the latest in a string of Pittsburgh churches to close in
the recent years. St. John Vianney church, which opened its doors
more than 105 years ago to immigrants, has officially closed down.
The closing has left Allentowns residents in an uproar.
This is not the first church to be faced with a closing dilemma.
Almost half of the churches in the Diocese of Pittsburgh are losing
funds, leaving bishops to combine their parishes to resolve the
problem. While more well-off parishes, located in Cranberry and
Mount Lebanon, are thriving with numbers upwards of 10,000
parishioners, old cultural districts that house churches are
diminishing every week.
Along with other churches faced with closure, like St. Nicholas
Croatian Church, St. Anthony, and St. Helen, outcomes have been
met with disapproval from parishioners. (Continued on page 3)

The Pittsburgh Catholic Population Plummets

One woman, who is neither a member of St. John Vianney nor a
catholic, believes that the community may never fully rebound
from the closure. When you lose something that large and that
much involved with the community for so many years, it's very
disheartening to everyone, not just the parishioners.
With all of the recent closings, one must wonder: does the Diocese
of Pittsburgh have a plan moving forward to manage the
endeavors of their churches? A solution must be found for the
growing decline in parishes. One can only hope that the closing of
St. John Vianney will bring the Diocese one step closer to solving
this crisis.

VA Victim

The exact spot in which

veteran Charles Richard
Ingram III passed away.

This is an image of a
Veterans Administration
Hospital in New Jersey.

VA Victim Using Extreme

Tactics to Initiate Change
Is there a defined point in which a company knows that their
customers are not happy? When and how, in fact, should the
company be made aware of the discomfort for which they are
potentially causing?
Charles Richard Ingram III believed that he should set himself
on fire in front of a VA Hospital on March 25, 2016, to prove
this point. Ingram supposedly walked a total of nine miles from
his home in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, to the front of
the Northfield Veterans Administration Hospital. From there,
he proceeded to set himself ablaze, which subsequently ended
his own life.
Why would a man commit suicide in such a gruesome way in
front of the hospital? Allegedly, the act was done as a protest
against the governments handling of veterans and their
hospitals.
The hospital is a government run building, operating from 8 am
to 4:30 pm on week days, with the exception of holidays. Also,
VA Hospitals have been under scrutiny for their severe, and well
documented, understaffing and waiting lists.
Many have tried to push new bills to enable veterans to receive
health care and assistance from their preferred doctors, like
Representative Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey has long
purposed. This method would allow soldiers to receive
immediate medical assistance during the hours for which they
need them.
Following the incident, the VA has downplayed the amount of
complaints and delayed appointments that have been present in
their facility. The group instead advertised their telehealth
services, group therapy and additional social workers.
Charles Ingram is gone, yet he may not be forgotten. Hopefully,
this message that he promoted shall change the regulations for
which veterans protest and provide health availability to all
veterans.

SPORTS
This years NFL Draft is
officially over, and The
Steelers seem to be in
pretty good shape
heading in to the
2016-2017 Season.
The main focus: defense.
The Steelers defense had
a rough season. The best
approach to take was to
fix it, and fix it they did.
Artie Burns, a
cornerback from Miami,
was the teams first rounder. While the original spot was
supposed to be filled by William Jackson III, Burns offers
just as many admirable attributes. With his incredible
play making ability, he seems to be an acceptable choice
for the Steelers.
Along with Burns came Sean Davis (S), Javon Hargrave
(DT), Travis Feeney (OLB), and Tyler Matakevich (ILB)
round up the defensive players drafted by the Pittsburgh
Steelers. Jerald Hawkins (OT) and Demarcus Ayers (WR)
are the only two offensive players that the Steelers picked
up this season, a decision made for the better.
We feel pretty good about the candidates we drafted,
Kevin Colbert, the teams general manager, said. Now,
we just have to see who is who and how much they
contribute.
This season will be primarily focused around defensive
improvement, as the draft shows. The Steelers had an
okay season last year, but if they even want to consider
the SuperBowl this year, it is important to fix the
previous errors of the defense and offense alike.
The team seems to have gained three new defensive
starters, possibly giving them a reasonable chance of
making playoffs once again this upcoming season. As
long as the proper work is put in from coaches and
players alike, the 2016-2017 NFL season looks bright for
the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Dr. Leddy Honored

for Teenage
Concussion Research
John Leddy, a clinical professor of orthopedics in
the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical
Sciences at UB and a physician with UBMD
Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, has been honored
for research conducted on adolescent
concussions.
For years, Dr. Leddy has been working towards the
ultimate goal of treating and preventing
concussions in teenagers. According to Dr. Leddy
himself, these concussion take the longest time to
heal due to the patients vulnerability. He used
the intolerance shown towards exercise as a
method of discovering the severity of the injury.
In regards to his research, Leddy says, Our
research demonstrates that a systematic
assessment of exercise tolerance, soon after the
injury, is the best predictor of recovery time.
A concussion is an injury to the brain for which the
brain violently shakes. All of the long term effects
are not yet known, neither are many treatment
options. The 2015 film, Concussion, and all of
the recent precautions taken by the NFL in an
attempt to study the injury have sparked
additional interest.
Because of the severity, frequency, and lack of
information known on the subject, concussions
specialist are in high demand. The world could be
living through the foundational work on
concussion research; if advances are made now, we
may one day find methods to both prevent and
treat a concussion properly. Hopefully, more
physicians like Dr. Leddy can one day find a
solution to this growing pandemic.

Know the Facts

Concussion researchers now suggest

that this injury could have permanent,
long last effects. Because of this, they
are actually considered one of the
most dangerous injuries around,
especially in regards to athletes.

What is a concussion?
According to emedicinehealth.com, a
concussion is an injury caused by an
impact to the head. This can also be
caused by violent shaking, spinning,
or a blow to the head. While it is not
regarded as a life-threatening injury,
new research is discovering more and
more about both the long term and
short terms effects.
If you or anybody you know
experiences an impact to the head
and has symptoms afterwards,
including a headache, dizziness,
slurred speech, and nausea, contact
your doctor immediately.

COLUMN
How to Make It through the Glory Years
Being a teenager is not an easy task: the constant fear over the future, struggle to keep high grades
and a social life, and the management of a healthy sleep schedule. If only it was easy, right? But it is
not. Scientist have discovered that modern teenagers have stress levels that match 1950s Asylum
Patients! Have no fear, though, because there is a solution to dealing with all of this stress.
If you think that you are constantly stressed, it is perfectly normal. Everybody has thought that at
least once in their lives, especially through the high school years. You need to find something
positive in your life, something that calms you down and distracts you from all of the emotional and
mental turmoil you might be going through. When you find yourself panicking, take a step back and
find your happy place. It sounds like a clich, I know, but it really does help in the long run.
Next, many people tend to overthink their lives: how a situation will go, a test will turn out, or how
the day is going to be. More often than not, it is done in a negative manner. If ever found in an
instance where you are just thinking way too far ahead of yourself, just stop. Change you sights to
something else.
Lastly, know your limits. It is okay to realize that you might have overstuffed your plate. We all do it
sometimes! It is okay to drop something off of your to-do list that serves only to make you suffer.
Trust me, it might seem silly or make you feel weak, but you are not weak. Knowing you limits is a
very strong attribute to have.
Sometimes, teenagers become lost through it all. It is completely fine to be stressed out and lost,
just learn how to manage it.

Lost: Is There A Missing

Concept?
Lost, the critically acclaimed ABC series that ran from
2004 to 2010, is often regarded as a piece of television
treasure. After season four, many fans grew upset with
the show because of nonsensical plot developments,
unanswered questions, and just bad production calls
among other factors. However, is the show really that
nonsensical?
Many view the program as a sci-fi, action/adventure,
which lead to many people wondering why so many
unusual occurrences happened. But what if the show
was actually an allegory for something else?
Looking at the show face value, some could be
disappointed by all that happens, but if one were to
view a show as a symbol for Purgatory, it all makes
more sense. When a new person dies, they join the rest
of the planes survivors on the island. On the island,
many characters work to overcome obstacles that
faced them in the real world.
Once a character on the show dies or permanently
leaves the island, they have beat what caused them
suffering. The Others, who are a colony of people that
have resided in secret on the island, are angels sent to
either assist them in making it to heaven or deny them
entry because they are not yet ready.
Without revealing too much more about the plot, the
show makes much more sense as the allegory. Lost
knows no limits in the field of creativity and allegorical
meaning, yet it still had some confusing moments that
even leave the smartest viewers scratching their heads.
Even if you are like me, somebody who is not drawn or
interested in the world of science fiction, there are
plenty of other aspects that will keep you entertained.
For this, I rank it an eight and a half castaways out of
ten. It is definitely worth your time.

Did you know?

Lost ran from 2004-2010 on the
ABC Network, and it is often
regarded as one of the best
shows of the decade by both
critics and fans alike.
