PARAPHRASE:THEAUTHOR'STHOUGHTSINYOURWORDS
Bywritingacarefulparaphrase,youwillclarifyforyourselfthefullmeaningofanotherwriter'sstatements.Intheprocessofwritinga
paraphrase,youmustpaycloseattentiontothemeaningoftheoriginalpassageinordertoreproducethatmeaninginyourown
words.Substitutingsynonymsforindividualwordsandrearrangingthesentencestructurewillhelpyoufindanewwaytoexpressthe
originalmeaning.Paraphrasingnotonlywillhelpyouincreaseyourownunderstandingofaparticularpassagebutwillallowyouto
communicatethemeaningofthatpassagetoothers.Inyourownwriting,youwillfrequentlyincludeaparaphrase,particularlywhen
youneedtorefertoanotherwriter'sworkinthecourseofmakingyourownoriginalstatements.Theparaphraseisaskillusefulfor
bothreadingaccurately,whenyouwanttotakeprecisenotesonwhatyouhaveread,andforwriting,whenyouwanttoreproduce
otherwriter'sideas.
